Excellent book on Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager

I’m glad this book was published because it’s hard to find clearly explained material on Google Tag Manager. It starts from the fundamentals and can get pretty advanced. The book has a sort of workbook feel. It explains a concept and then takes you step-by-step on how to implement that concept. You should do the exercises if you want to get anything out of this book. I definitely recommend you get this book if you’re interested in learning more about Google Analytics and especially Google Tag Manager.

Good introductory book. Don't be intimidated by the "for Developers" in its title.

This is a good, readable, and practical book about Google Tag Manager (GTM). To get the most out of it you need, of course, to practice with GTM. Don't be intimidated by the "for Developers" in its title. This is not a highly technical book. It's more of an introduction targeted to people who have a little experience with Google Analytics, and GTM.

Conceptual framework for a tough topic

Measuring information security is the greatest remaining challenge for many of us. Metrics are essential for a scientific management approach, rather than relying purely on gut feel and guesswork. Standards such as ISO/IEC 27001 require the use of objective information about the status and effectiveness of information security controls in relation to the risks, in order to drive appropriate improvements in the Information Security Management System. However, it is not immediately obvious exactly what needs measuring, nor how to do it. This book lays out the foundations on which a rational measurement system can be designed to manage information security in a more objective fashion.

The author encourages readers to consider a wide variety of measurement approaches and apply them sensibly to their information security management issues. In addition to conventional information security metrics, the book draws on governance, risk management, financial management and business analysis methods, a more diverse range of approaches than is normally covered in this field. Introducing measures of organization structure and culture sets this security metrics book apart from most others.

Although the writing style is clear, this is a complex subject covered in depth. Being rather theoretical in approach, the book won't suit practitioners simply looking for a short checklist of `security things to measure'. However, those with the interest and time to study Information Security Management Metrics will be rewarded with a deeper and more rounded understanding of the issue. As such, the book is probably of most value to CISOs and ISMs tasked with implementing better security metrics, and to information security management students.

Think twice before buying

As one reviewer noted, the coverage is very superficial. The book included some rather obscure models that I have never seen it used in the real world. Perhaps the book is simply mis-titled. For the practitioners in the field who read the book and start digging a little deeper, you'd get the sense that the author really didn't have much hands-on experience. One particular paragraph and chart caught my eye.

Page. 68, the paragraph and chart on a study of the ROSI of various activities, based on a whitepaper from @Stake. The author provided no interpretation for the chart. The book claims it's based on an analysis of over 600 organisations. And wrote an insightful observation, "These results will undoubtedly be controversial and lead to energetic protests..." The following was what trouble me.

Here is a short version of what the "saving to cost ratio" chart suggests: (1)Screen Locking has a 71.9% effectiveness in improving security; whereas things like (2) Nightly Back-up (only 0.2%) and (3) Central Access Control (0.1%). Firewall, IDS, patches...etc are in between (all below 10%)

Any security professional who saw the chart and read the "insight" would question the findings and probably dig a bit deeper. I did. As it turns out, through a thin connection of mine who knows a guy who knows another guy who used to work for @Stake.

They couldn't find any whitepaper on a ROSI study of 600+ organisations. (Doesn't mean it's not there, but he couldn't find it.)

The cited source of the chart did worked for @Stake for a year or so. However, the chart actually came from the source's PhD thesis while he was an economic graduate at Stanford University. (I am actually reading his paper from my desktop as I type this) I am just going to copy the following verbatim, straight from the PhD thesis... in reference to the "saving to cost ratio" chart,

"The savings were calculated by assuming that each safeguard was implemented in isolation."

So.... how many of you implemented screen saver locking "in isolation" ? or turn on your nightly backup "only" and nothing else as a security measure ? Don't get me wrong, it was actually quite an interesting paper, well worth the read. I believe the paper actually got quite a bit of press coverage when it was first released.

The only thing "controversial" about this is How did the author miss that ? (book author, not the original source)

High level collection of what's out in wild

At the most, you can say that it's a good collection of what's out and about. Too much focus on few quantitative measures, and too little on 'Security metrics'.

By no means it can be called "a definitive guide ...." It neither provides any ideas on 'monitoring' nor on real 'measurement metrics.'

The index available as free download is misleading. It appears to cover a lot of ground and led me to purchase. However, if Goggling those topics or Wiki on any of those topics will provide more information than the narrative.

I found the "Contents index" more useful than the book itself.

A heartfelt review of "British Invasion" bands both familiar and utterly obscure

An unusual picture book about the "British invasion" era, featuring acts as well-known as the Beatles, down to many that no one this side of the Pond is likely to have heard of. Particular emphasis is placed on "family tree" connections - meaning you will learn that some of your favorite artists gigged with people you will not have known about (example: the peripatetic career of Rod Stewart). Not sure what rules, if any, were applied in the selection process; the book seems mostly a labour (since it's from the UK) of love. This adds to its funky charm, but encyclopedic it isn't. Great fun for fans of the genre.

AN EXCITING BOOK MORE BRITISH INVASION LISTENERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

I know this book has been reviewed in years past, but its such a great book that I thought, in my own limited way, I might bring it to the attention of music listeners who were (and still are) enthralled (like me) with the music coming out of England in the 60's.

In 200 + pages, this wonderful large size book tells the story of well known, and most importantly, the relatively unknown groups who were part of the "British Invasion". And while the book doesn't cover every single artist/group, there's many names that aren't familiar to most listeners, unless you're a very deep collector of this music. The necessary limitation of when to stop on this timeline brings this era (and the music) into sharper focus. Groups like JETHRO TULL, YES, etc. aren't included simply because their music doesn't fall under the category of "beat" music. And while some readers may grumble about the omission of a particular group/artist, it helps bring into focus the groups that are here, and the book is stronger for it.

This book, from front cover to back, is jammed with hundreds of b&w and color photos, graphics, record label reproductions, and concert hand-bills and posters. Combined with information on each artist/group, makes this great book indispensable for listeners (like myself) who want to know something about groups just outside THE BEATLES/ROLLING STONES/LED ZEPPELIN information we all know by now.

The groups are listed alphabetically, starting with A BAND OF ANGELS and ending with THE ZOMBIES. In between are relatively unknown groups such as THE ACTION (a personal favorite), THE BIRDS (another great group), CHERRY SMASH, THE DIMPLES, THE MERSEYS, THE "N" BETWEENS, THE PUSSYFOOT, THE SONS OF FRED, TINTERN ABBEY, THE UGLYS, and WIMPLE WITCH. And this is only a cursory list just flipping through the book. Combine those groups with THE BEATLES, THE WHO, THE MOVE, PROCOL HARUM, FLEETWOOD MAC, FAMILY, Donovan, David Bowie, and THE PRETTY THINGS, and many others, and this book pretty much covers the era. This book gives the reader the advantage of reading it cover to cover, or flipping it open to any page and reading something informative, and having wonderful photos and graphics to help bring things into sharper focus.

While reading about these artists is fun and informative, its the photos and graphics that truly make this book a standout. For anyone who feels this era was filled with exciting, important, and yes, fun music-music from a truly different time, this book will help fill in the holes and help put everything in perspective. From the groups we all know (and still listen to), to other groups we should perhaps know more about-this book fits the bill rather nicely. For anyone who wants to know more about this exciting, unrepeatable era-get this book.

SUPERB BOOK OF BRITISH POP MUSIC HISTORY!

I have been trying to get this excellent book ever since my good friend showed me his copy and I am indeed ecstatic over my success in purchasing it at a very reasonable price. The book contains 208 pages, which measure 12.1 by 9.9 inches, and contain an enormous amount of information, as well as hundreds of rare photos of the bands. In addition, there are excellent reproductions of ticket stubs, handbills, posters, rare 45 picture sleeves, insert cards, L.P. photos, rare publicity photos and rare promotional stickers. The book is filled with information about each group listed alphabetically from A Band Of Angels all the way to The Zombies. Besides the info and the photos, author Terry Rawlings includes not just the obvious groups, such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Cream, The Kinks, The Yardbirds, etc., but Mr. Rawlings also includes many obscure, forgotten, and unheard of groups, which gives the reader a unique perspective of the OTHER side of The British Invasion. Similar to the Garage-Rock explosion in The United States, the book details how rich and bountiful The British Blast was during this very formative and influential period. In addition to give added perspective, some non-British groups who made an impact in the U.K., such as The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Bee Gees, The Easybeats, and even Los Bravos, are included in the book. Most of the photos are in eye-popping color, as well as the minority in black and white. To add even more perspective to the book, Terry also includes an up-to date status of where these band members are now, and what other projects they may be involved with. Some of the band photos are full-page length, while many more are included in the side-bars. Some of the OTHER groups that most people may not be too familiar with are The Action, The Attack, The Big Three, The Birds, The Creation, Dantalion's Chariot, The Deviants, (Les) Fleur-De-Lys, The Merseybeats, The Move, The Pretty Things, and The Sorrows, just to name a few of my favorites. It is apparent that the book is indeed a labor of Love, and it displays this on each and every precious page. The reader also has the choice of simply reading the book from cover to cover, or going to specific sections which detail separate groups. I cannot emphasize enough how special this book is and I am even entertaining the thought of purchasing another copy just so that I can keep it in mint condition, as opposed to wearing mine out from going over it time and time again. MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! SMRZ!

I purchased three books on the subject of forgiveness: "Forgive and forget: healing the hurts we dont deserve", "From anger to forgiveness a practical guide to breaking the negative power of anger and achieving reconciliation", and "Forgiveness: how to make peace with your past and get on with your life".

Forgiveness: how to make peace with your past and get on with your life was by far the most helpful. It is the most practical and the most comprehensive of the three books I purchased. The book explains the what (forgiveness is), why (forgive and humans experience stumbling blocks), and also the how (to forgive).

I found from anger to forgiveness to be the second best. It had some good practical advice and steps, but did not go into the same level of detail that forgiveness did. I would have rated this book higher had I not read Forgiveness:.

Forgive and forget was the least effective of the three books. It had very few practical steps or solutions. The book spoke at length about theory and did not ever arrive at practical conclusions or steps to take. The story in the very beginning was the closest the book ever came to defining the path to forgiveness.

Fascinating approach

I love Earnie Larsen and this book confirms it. In it he (I've not quite finished it) does what the title says, discusses methods of moving from anger to forgiveness. He does this and avoids the traps that might ensnare a person into thinking forgiveness means being open to the harm again while making it clear that forgiveness is for our benefit, not for the benefit of the transgressor.

About the Author
Very little is known about Hesiod and it cannot definitely be proved that the same man wrote both the Theogony and Works and Days. He probably lived in the eighth century BC (contemporary with Homer) in Boeotia on the Greek mainland.

Theognis lived and wrote chiefly in the sixth century BC. He came from Megara, probably the one on the Greek mainland, and was an aristocrat. There was a popular revolution, in which he lost his status and possibly his money. He appears to have been exiled and might have moved to Megara in Sicily. He had a friend called Kurnos, the son of Polypaos, an aristocrat like himself. to whom he wrote numerous poems.

Dorothea Schmidt Wender was born in 1934 in Ohio and graduated from Radcliffe College, and then went to the University of Minnesota and Harvard University. She has been Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Classics at Wheaton College, Massachusetts. Her publications include book reviews and scholarly articles.

Some of the other reviews offered with M.L. West's translation of Hesiod's "Theogony" and "Works and Days" for the Oxford World's Classics actually refer to Dorothea Wender's verse translation of the same works, plus a charming version of the collection of lyrics attributed to Theognis, published in the Penguin Classics. That is a worthwhile version -- although the joining of the peasant-oriented Boeotian Hesiod to the mainly aristocratic, and partly Athenian, "Theognis" corpus is a little odd.

West's version of the two main Hesiodic poems is, however, in prose, and offers the latest in textual and historical scholarship -- although this is not very obviously on display. West, who has edited much (perhaps by now all) of the "Hesiodic" corpus, with substantial technical commentaries (along with a good deal of Homer and the "Homeric Hymns"), offers here his best reading of the two long poems which seem most firmly attributed Hesiod. (Although some, including Wender, would prefer two poets, in addition to the problem of interpolations).

West's commentary, although useful, is surprisingly sparse, given what he could have offered; a lot of detailed argument has been converted into the translation itself.

"Theogony," for those not familiar with the work even by reputation, is the story of the origins and struggles of the gods of Classical Greece. Although the meter and basic style are those of the Homeric epics, and the gods are mainly the same, many details are different (Zeus is a younger son, not the eldest, for example), and the struggles between various generations are the foreground story, not a long-concluded background to the reign of Zeus. We meet Heaven, and his sons and daughters, culminating in the rebellion of the Titans, then the Olympians, who wage war against their father and his fellow-Titans, and so on. It is an extremely violent story, full of abusive parents, mutilations inflicted by rebellious offspring, divine cannibalism, and a whole succession of other behaviors the Greeks themselves considered repellent. The philosophers had real problems with this work -- one can understand from it why Plato wanted to ban poets from the ideal state.

Interspersed through the action are a number of catalogues of nature-deities, which are variously regarded by critics as interpolations or key structural elements. Many readers simply find them boring; it helps if you are using a translation which interprets the Greek names, which are usually charmingly appropriate for the natural element being personified.

"Works and Days" contains several important mythological passages, expanding and altering "Theogony," but is in the main a sort of sermon on how to be prosperous and righteous. It is packed with details of daily life, which readers will find either fascinating or tedious. and are sometimes rather opaque. West does a good job in making readable this combination of a sort of pagan equivalent of an Old Testament prophet with an Iron Age Farmer's Almanac, and his notes do help with some of the knottier passages. (Note that there is one recent translation-with-commentary of the "Works" which is dedicated almost entirely to making detailed agricultural and ethnographic sense of it; West clearly offers a more literary approach.)

The latter part of the twentieth century has seen a number of translations of the main Hesiodic poems, by Apostolos N. Athanassakis, R.M. Frazer, Richmond Lattimore, and, as noted above, Dorothea Wender (Penguin Classics), to join the old Evelyn-White bilingual edition for the Loeb Classical Library edition, with numerous attributed fragments. (A new Loeb edition has announced). There are also translations of single poems, by Norman O. Brown and by Richard S. Caldwell (both of the "Theogony") and Tandy and Neale ("Works and Days"). West offers a substantial alternative to the others, based on an exceptionally close knowledge of the textual problems.

The Ancient Greek's handbook

"Theogony" is one of, if not "the", original sources of Greek mythology. Hesiod tells us the full genealogy and origins of the Greek gods, and how the hegemony of Zeus was established after bitter fights and prolific intercourse with godesses and human females. Perhaps the most impressive part of this poem is the story about the god Typhoon. Hesiod depicts a horrific set of disasters that happened to the Earth, with Typhoon apparently being an unimaginable electric storm. Scholars like Immanuel Velikovsky have taken this episode as proof that many centuries ago, Venus and Mars, then wandering cosmic bodies, came very close to each other in a location near the Earth, which presumably caused our planet's rotation to stop, with the following earthquakes, electric storms and the like. In fact, reading that passage by Hesiod strongly seemed to me to be the writing of very old memories of a defining catastrophe that left an indelible mark on human memory. Be that true or not, the poem is very powerful.
"Works and Days" is a very different story. After Hesiod's father died, his apparently indolent brother Perses tried to rob him of part of the inheritance. We all know how bitter fights among siblings can be, especially about inheritances. So Hesiod decided to write a book to teach his brother some lessons, beginning with a little history and theology, and then some practical advice on how to make a decent living by hard work and honesty. The result is a simply wonderful account of some important myths, like the ages through which man has passed (Golden, Silver, Heroic, Bronze and our own), as well as Pandora's myth. He also tells us about Prometheus, the Christ-like figure of the Greeks. After that, Hesiod tells us how a Greek farmer should plan his activities for the year, with delicious depictions of the seasons and very concrete information about their way of life.
It is a very pleasant experience to go down to the very sources of our culture, especially when written in Hesiod's light, brief and humorous way. A very old masterpiece whhich is very important for how much of it we have carried to the present day.

One of the best Classical translations I have ever read

Penguin translations often go too far in pursuit of a contemporary and popular sound, for instance in the infamous Rieu translations of Homer, with Athena "dancing attendance on Odysseus like a lover"; but this one is perfect, probably the best of the entire Penguin Classics collection. The jewel in this excellent book is the translation of Hesiod's WORKS AND DAYS; a translation of exceptional quality, worthy of being mentioned in one breath with Robert Fagles and C.Day Lewis.
Next to it are the wonderful, engaging introductory essays, in which Professor Wender shows the most enchanting insight into the mentality and attitude of her poets, making them live on the page for us. It is unmistakeably the work of a specialist, yet it is pitched - successfully - at the ordinary reader. A person who knows nothing about the Classics will leave them not only having a clear and precise idea of the characters of Hesiod and Theognis, but having learned a considerable amount about what makes good poetry. If the translation shows the poetic gifts of a Fagles or Lewis, the introduction shows the critical eye of a truly great critic - a C.S.Lewis, a Matthew Arnold. Do not be misled by the reviewer who says that she "carps" at the Theogony; he is only showing his shock at the notion that someone might have different views from his own. Professor Wender's criticisms are justified, especially in view of her very insightful comparison of the literary quality of the THEOGONY and that of the WORKS AND DAYS. This is the model of what a paperback translation of a classic work should be. As for the verse, I can do no better than to quote the terrible sequence, building up to a smashing final blow, which Professor Wender herself mentions as a fine instance of the poetic excellence of the author of the WORKS AND DAYS, but which might as well feature as the type of her own fluent and beautiful poetic ear; think, as you listen, of that last white flash of deathless beauty, vanishing away to the land of the Gods to leave men abandoned to their fate:
Zeus will destroy this race of mortal men
When babies shall be born with greying hair.
Father will have no common bond with son,
Neither will guest with host, nor friend with friend;
The brother-love of past days will be gone.
Men will dishonour parents who grow old
Too quickly, and will blame and criticize
With cruel words. Wretched and godless, they,
Refusing to repay their bringing up,
Will cheat their aged parents of their due.
Men will destroy the towns of other men.
The just, the good, the man who keeps his word
Will be despised, but men will praise the bad
And insolent. Might will be right, and shame
Will cease to be. Men will do injury
To better men by speaking crooked words
And adding lying oaths; and everywhere,
Harsh-voiced and sullen-faced and loving harm,
Envy will walk along with wretched men.
