This is the kind of book where you can smell and hear and see the fictional world the writer has created, so palpably does the atmosphere come through. Set on an island in the straits north of Puget Sound, in Washington, where everyone is either a fisherman or a berry farmer, the story is nominally about a murder trial. But since it's set in the 1950s, lingering memories of World War II, internment camps and racism helps fuel suspicion of a Japanese-American fisherman, a lifelong resident of the islands. It's a great story, but the primary pleasure of the book is Guterson's renderings of the people and the place.

An island's soul on trial along with a Japanese fisherman.

The opening scene in riveting: a small-town courtroom on an island in the upper end of Puget Sound on a snowy day. Having lived in Seattle for a few years, I can really say that his description of the residents of the island, and the geography itself (sounds like Whidbey Island to me) is excellent. Guterson's descriptions of the salmon-fishing, strawberry-growing culture, their houses, boats, and perspectives are wonderfully refreshing. Set in the 50's, it shows the honest simplicity of life in that era, yet gets into the complexity of the personalities and feelings of the main characters. Guterson displays the interactions of the local people as though he might have been one of them. Their social transactions are complex, although properly muted in 50's fashion so there is not a lot of dirty wash hanging out in public. If you like Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion stories from Lake Wobegon, you will probably do well with this book. The alleged murder of fisherman Karl Heine by Japanese fisherman Kabuo Miyamoto kicks off a fury of irrational anger at the otherwise exemplar Japanese population. Having been born in 1945, it reminds me vividly of the comments and prejudices I heard about the Japanese way back in South Dakota where most people had never met such a human -- except on the battlefield. The teenage romance between Ishmael (later the island's sole newspaper editor) and Hatsue Imada (who would finally marry Kabuo) is touching and heart-wrenching, although their conversation and insights into their situation might be a bit too high-level for their time and maturity. It is Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet set in Puget Sound. The sudden hysteria and hatred that boils over when Heine is found dead and Kabuo is accused, jailed and charged based on very circumstantial evidence shows how fine the line is between acceptance, toleration and total condemnation when ethnic groups live together in close proximity. Guterson uses flashbacks to develop the main characters very fully to the point where you think you might be living next door to them by the end of the novel. The murder mystery aspect of this story is only a vehicle for a deep exploration into the heart and soul of humans, as individuals and groups. The ending is predictable and uplifting, but left me with the feeling that the island had a lot of work to do to get back to normal -- years of atonement and reconciliation. This story is a good read for those who allow themselves to be swept away into a beautifully told, tragic story. Real men do not cry when reading storybooks, but I strangely noticed some tears on my cheeks every now and then. This is not a formula-based murder mystery. It is a story that can stick with you and make you look at yourself as though you might have been one of the islanders.

I loved this book. It will go into my "Best Books I've Read List". I'm not going to go into the story line, enough of the other reviews tell the story, but this is one of those books that you just sit back and let it take you away. The descriptions of the area, the people, the way he describes the background on each character. This book made me "feel" the characters, the storm, the cold, the snow, hear the bullets, and smell the strawberries. The tension builds as you wonder if a person you believed in was really going to do the right thing. When I finished, I gave a big sigh, and I realized if I hadn't read it, I really would have missed something, there are few books I've read that make you feel that way, examples of a few other great books, Nine Boys in the Boat, The Storyteller, Prince of Tides, To Kill a Mockingbird, When Crickets Cry, The Light Between Oceans, The Book Thief, and now Snow Falling of Cedars joins the club. I have my Kindle read me 1 to 2 books a week while driving, but I will be purchasing this one hardcover for my library to read during a cold snowy winter day wrapped up in a blanket. Yes, buy it, sit back, read slow and enjoy.

This is one of my all time favourite novels, rife with beautiful writing

This is one of my all time favourite novels, rife with beautiful writing, rich characters, excellent description, thoughtful, poignant, at times nostalgic, at times hopefull, but Amazon's words are so lacking here.. It is one of those hard to describe types of novels that defies a simple categorization, and I hate to call it a mystery because while there is one, it is NOT a "mystery novel." They writing is poignant, there is a wonderfully written back story interposed, moral dilemmas, and of course a man is on trial for murder.

Set in the 1950s, the flashbacks go to the 1930s and 1940s, both before and during WW II. We see how WW II threw this community with both European and Japanese Americans into a tailspin and with unresolved conflict and issues still simmering under the surface. Ishmael, the protagonist and not on trial, is a one-armed vet who is the town reporter, is one of those with those unresolved issues in his life. I have read this novel more than once from the library, but finally realized I want to own my own copy, and not just buy it as a gift for someone else.

I've been using this guide exclusively as a desk reference for tolerancing machine parts. Mr. Day's approach is one I like; I don't spend much time around actual machine shops (my company farms out all machining and fabrication) or machinists and as such I generally have no idea how tolerances are measured during inspection (I also am but 2 years out of college). This guide has many illustrations that demonstrate how actual inspection rigs are setup for various tolerances. Using this little guide alone, for example, I could understand the difficulty required of inspecting symmetry or concentricity tolerances because these tolerances rely on generating a median line from produced parts and not a plane or axis, which are much simpler to simulate. Other designers I work with specify these tolerances without a second thought where a simpler scheme would suffice; what they don't know that they don't know is going to cost time and money in fabrication.

I also own Krulikowski's full textbook on the 1994 standard. This little guide is much more useful, again because I think the best approach to understanding and interpreting GD&T is from the inspection table. I'm off to buy the full text this guide is based on. Thanks Mr. Day!

The first thing I dislike is the binding being on the top and not the side. It makes for flipping through pages a pain.
If you reference this book often enough, I am sure you will have pages begin falling out. The binding it to small to allow flipping through without pages binding up inside the binding.
The content has nice pretty colored pictures trying to describe what each call out means, but it does a poor job explaining it.
This book is so vague in its explanations that if you are weak enough in your GD&T knowledge that you need to reference something for a reminder, this book leaves you scratching your head....like it did me.

The Ultimate-GD-Pocket-Guide-Y14-5-2009 did a much better job getting its content to be understood by me.

I pretty much learned GDT from this book. I don't consider myself an expert, but it's basically an introductory class for $15. You can't beat it. I have been able to confidently detail drawings with this guide. Any slight clarifications or minor questions can usually be answered by a quick google search. The 3D images in here are invaluable. Better than a textbook in my opinion. Best all in one quick resource guide without question.

Check Out Budig's Mind Body Green Course Instead

I enjoy Kathryn Budig a great deal on YogaGlo and other venues, but a full length book doesn't play to her strengths. Her simultaneously kind and vivacious voice do not translate to the page, and about 80% of this feels like a no, duh. Budig does some great work, but she doesn't sing here, and I was left wanting to just turn on one of her videos. I did take her Mind Body Green course, which is basically the same content via video, and that is a lot better. If you like Budig, maybe invest in that and skip this volume.

Aim True - truly a hit!

I am so grateful I have this book - it's not a diet book, it's a life book. It's a guide you can go back to again and again. Kathryn helps you come to peace with yourself - and from there, everything else falls into place. Beautifully written - with great recipes you can tailor to your personal preferences (I'm vegan) - it's a book I wish I had years ago. Give it as a gift to yourself or anyone you know who is struggling with weight.

What a beautiful book. It is filled with beautiful images, colors, photos, recipes, and Kathryn's motivating thoughts.

Whether you are already a yoga fan or just thinking about it, this book has something for everyone — even the un-yoga reader can find inspiration within its pages.

Kathryn's message is to be who you really are inside and out, to live a healthier, happier, and more relaxed life. You may not agree with all of her philosophies but there is no denying that the underlying message I listed above can apply to many people at any age.

I liked this book so much that I purchased a second copy and had it sent to my daughter. It wasn't a gift for a special occasion; I just wanted to share this lovely book with my darling girl.

Get yourself a copy and read and apply the inspirational parts that fit with who you are and then enjoy a healthier, happier, more relaxed life.

About the Author
John Bernhardt Smith, also known as JB or Jack and as a child Johnny, was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on September 20, 1897. His mother, Karen Johanesen, emigrated from Norway and his father, John Bernhardt Sr, from Sweden. JB had two brothers and five sisters. His mother died in 1904 and he was raised by his older sisters. His father worked as a carpenter to support the family. After the war JB married Margaret Lemke on September 8, 1920 in Eau Claire. They moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he worked for the Internal Revenue Service as head of the accounting division. JB served in the Army Reserves from 1920 to 1940 and retired with the rank of Captain. He retired from the IRS in 1957 and they moved to Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin to be near their only child, Elaine, and her husband, Kenneth Pattow, and their three daughters. JB had an active retirement until his death in 1977. He was Commander of the local WWI Veterans group and active in his church and the Masonic organization. He was chaplain of the local American Legion and in that capacity gave the Memorial Day address in Lake Mills, Wisconsin in 1970, which is included in this book. He was also the last Justice of the Peace in Fort Atkinson.

Ellen Bogner has shared with the world her grandfather's experiences as a young soldier in the trenches of France during WWI. For many years Ellen was the custodian of John Smith's writings which he had intended to publish but, time ran out. Ellen is to be commended for sharing this memoir. All too often successive generations have failed to learn from our country's history; choosing to believe that all relevant history began when they were born. John Smith's description of his return to America in which he describes all of the changes in his hometown and himself which had taken place should serve as a reminder that all wars, wherever and whenever, have left their marks on our country from which we can learn and try not to repeat. John Smith also shows us how his upbringing and the value system in which he was raised gave him an optimistic sense of purpose, direction, and patriotism for the rest of his life. His Memorial Day address, given in 1970, serves as a lasting memory of a full life, well lived. Thank you to my friend Ellen for sharing.

Wonderful Story

This is a personal account of a American WWI soldier. It was of his time at the Mexican border then in WWI. John doesn't pull any punches; you know just what he and his fellow soldiers went through from the gas attacks to the kindness of post-war Germans. It even includes hand draw sketches of a tool used to clean the gas out of a trench and various exploding devices. I would highly recommend this book if you want a true account of an American WWI soldier.

If you are just starting to think about this idea, then this is a pretty good book, covers some basic ideas and will help you. If you have been doing something along these lines for a while, there is really nothing new here. All in all, well written, but basic, a good starting place!
