Jon Housman is co-founder and CEO of Jungle Interactive Media, Inc., and an adjunct professor at the NYU's Stern School of Business. A near "must-read" for MBA students seeking employment

Job- or internship-seeking MBA students should first, of course, take advantage of the many resources available from their business school's career center, and also any alumni career services offered by their undergraduate school. An outstanding book to augment these services, however, is Nail the Job.
Written in a hip style that should appeal to Gen X MBA students, the book is a collection of articles from MBA Jungle and JD Jungle magazines. It doesn't read like a collection, however, but as a complete, step-by-step introduction to today's MBA student job search.
I have only one criticism. Chapter 7 on "headhunters" is confusing. Though it's clearly describing contingency search firms, it doesn't clarify this point - or identify and describe the distinction between retained search and contingency search. In a sense, this is a minor criticism given the book's primary audience - search firms, retained or contingency, are rarely of help to MBA students, particularly those attending full-time. Why should an organization looking to hire new MBAs pay a search fee of any type when it probably already has an internal group to recruit MBA students?
Current MBA students reading this review - please don't let the last paragraph pointing out one area of weakness stop you from picking up and going through this book, and implementing its suggestions. Nail the Job is written for you and your needs, and it is very good!

A Great Story Between the Two Great Wars

If you are at all interested in the time period between the two world wars - then read this book. Many of the characters are taken from the pages of history - where they are often portrayed as demonic and one- dimensional. In this story, these same characters - like Goring and Himmler - are given motivation and depth that while not justifying their beliefs - at least allows for a plausible motivation for their often horrendous actions.

New ways of tying a necktie appear rarely. Some 50 years passed between the introduction of the Windsor knot and the arrival of the Pratt knot in 1989. "Rather than wait another half-century for the next knot," Fink and Mao write, "we considered a more formal approach." And so they present 85 tie-tying techniques, each one shown in a drawing with instructions on how to achieve the desired result. They also offer a brief history of neckwear and photographs of famous figures wearing ties, among them Fred Astaire in a four-in-hand, Frank Sinatra in a Windsor knot and the Duke of Windsor not wearing a Windsor. But, being research physicists at the University of Cambridge, the authors are interested in more than sartorial versatility. They deal also with knot theory and topology. For the reader who wishes to probe tie-tying that deeply, they represent "knot sequences as random walks on a triangular lattice."

Not Just Knots

When I started my current job, I checked to see if I would have to wear a tie. I do not like ties, but I did like _The 85 Ways to Tie a Tie_ (Broadway Books) by Thomas Fink and Yong Mao. There are indeed eighty-five ways to tie a tie, and they prove it, and they show them all. If you wear a tie, or know someone who does, and especially someone who does under protest, this is a useful and entertaining little book.
But how does anyone prove that there are eighty-five ways to tie a tie? Well, the genial authors explain: "Tie knots, we realized, are equivalent to persistent random walks on a triangular lattice." If that explanation strikes you as less than useful, you can turn to the appendix at the back of the book, where you will find the random walk explanation proved by means of equations with symbols and superscripts which I cannot reproduce here. Comes the explanation: "Our day job as theoretical physicists might have had something to do with it." It does not take a mathematician to enjoy this book, however. What the authors have done is to examine all the variations of how to tie a standard tie. This means that one leaves the little end alone and makes the big end travel around to form the knot. Having crossed the little end, the big end can go to the left of it, or right, or to the center (where the neck of the wearer is). That is three possible moves, and within each of the three fields, the big end may either go in toward the wearer or out away from the wearer, for a total of six moves in all, not counting the final move, which is always to pull the big end down through the knot to its final resting place. Each knot can thus be specified with permutations of six simple moves. The simplest is the three-move variety called the "Oriental," the most complex is the nine-move memory-breaker known as the "Balthus." Windsor, half-Windsor, four-in-hand, and all the others are shown and instructions given. The authors have also noted the methods which might help make a more impressive knot in a lightweight tie, or in a tie that has grown limp with use, and various other suggestions. There is art here as well as science.
This is a unique blend of mathematics, sartorial history, and fashion instruction, wittily presented and attractively illustrated. If we have to have ties, we might as well let them teach us something.

My boyfriend loved it. He loves gadgets and this kind of made his everyday tie into a gadget. The book was listed as "like new" and that's exactly what it was. I couldn't find anything wrong with it. I never would have bought this book at its list price of $60.00+. So, if you can find it used and you have someone in your life who enjoys wearing a suit and tie, go for it.

A Moral Compass That Points to True North.

I bought "Heart of a Lion" because I'm a fan of military history and followed the books on Operation Red Wings. What I got was much more than another book about Navy SEALs.

"Heart of a Lion" is a much needed compass that points to the true north of integrity and honor. It challenges us to examine ourselves, our values and our motives. "Heart of a Lion" provides leadership lessons for Fortune 500 CEO's and teenagers trying to moderate the influences of peer pressure.

While the book is value and moral based it crosses boundaries sometimes established by specific texts that reference faith or religion. You won't get that here. "Heart of a Lion" simply teaches how to live a life on honor and acknowledges that, as humans, we will all make mistakes and all fall short sometimes.

This may be the perfect value based book for business, educators and families. At only 118 succinct, well written pages it is perfect for teachers to use in class and businesses to distribute to their staff and managers. Never "preachy" and filled with examples from Medal of Honor winner Michael P. Murphy (the Navy SEAL killed in Operation Red Wings while radioing for support for his team, exposing himself to enemy fire) the book delivers powerful insights on strong values that have slipped so much in our modern society.

Short but wonderful

I was hoping for a book that was a little longer (I did not read how many pages were in it when I bought it) but every page of it is well worth it. No extra "fluff" in this book, short and to the point. After each chapter there are blank lined pages for you to make notes on what you just read. I really enjoyed this as the book really had my brain turning and worked perfect for me to put my thoughts onto paper. I enjoyed the book so much I bought another and sent it to a friend. Highly recommend this for young and old.

I am almost done with this book, and I think most people(myself included) could learn a lot about real leadership and integrity from Mike Murphy. Not boasting, helping those who are less popular, and admitting mistakes are things we should all do, and if I could I would make ALL members of congress read this and learn from a true man of honor.

This annual is becoming a rite of summer for me

Ten years ago the Warship "annual" was going through a rough patch. I put annual in scare quotes because one never knew if or when it was going to appear; in a seven year span it appeared only five times.

But those days are in the rear view mirror. For the last five years Warship has appeared on Amazon around the new year and has shown up in my mail box in June. The quality of the articles and features has been consistently high. This has to be in large part due to the editorship of John Jordan and Stephen Dent.

This year was well up to the standards of the previous ones. All the articles were interesting and informative, even the ones of a type which I'm normally not the biggest fan of, like articles that focus on service history instead of technical features. I wasn't holding out much hope that "TB 191 - A Tasmanian Torpedo Boat" would have much of interest. I was pleasantly surprised.

My favorite articles this year were "Building the Grand Fleet: 1906 -1916" and "Modern Air-Independent Propulsion Equipped Submarines". The former articles gives a wonderful overview of the infrastructure Britain had in place when faced with a challenge from Germany to her naval superiority. Great stuff. The latter article was also very welcome because I had pretty much lost touch with the latest advances in non-nuclear propulsion.

The features are also outstanding, particularly the 20 pages of book reviews which always have a few titles I can place on my wish list. Also, several titles that I have already read are reviewed and it is interesting to see if the reviewer's opinion matches my own. This year there is a new wrinkle with a few pages devoted to non-English titles.

Very highly recommended. The only possible reservation I can come up with is that this book is not for the warship novice; it does assume a fair amount of nautical savvy on the reader's part.

Extremely comprehensive but could use more practice questions

This book systematically organizes every GMAT CR question type into "families," with each family possessing its own set of characteristics. Such an organization facilitates a better understanding of each question type because you know what to look for after you finish reading each question. I've gone through the book once already but am going through it one more time to make sure I really absorb the material.

Also, the book actually breaks down the concept of an argument and helps you understand the building blocks of an argument in order to be able to attack any question by following the same rules. There's no discussion of cheap tricks to try to find correct answers. This book is an absolute must if you hope to master critical reasoning on the GMAT. It's especially helpful for people like me who are weak in this part of the verbal section because you are given a step-by-step process for approaching every question. Despite the differences in question types, almost every question can be attacked in a similar manner. So it's good to see a book that focuses on the fundamentals of argumentation.

The only reason I knocked off one star is because this book could use some more practice questions. There are 50 practice questions, but I don't feel like that's enough. This book should be used in conjunction with the Official Guide.

Ultimate Answer to Your Critical Reasoning Needs

==== 2015 UPDATE ====
Powerscore released a new 2015 edition of the book. It has had some updates - several chapters have been completely updated with new overview, examples and new problem sets. Navigation has also been improved. It has grown too by about 70 pages (in part due to having more white space and in part due to content). Not a light book at 370 pages but definitely very very comprehensive overview of pretty much everything. Don't expect to see too much fluff, the book gets right to it. Though after MGMAT has improved their CR book (currently in its 6th edition), I would have given this book 3-4 stars, the latest revision seems to provide a good alternative to the Veritas Prep/MGMAT books.

==== 2009 Review ====
Though pretty similar to Manhattan GMAT book, it offers more practice questions in the book and has a slightly better overview of the Critical Reasoning questions.

~~~ Strengths: ~~~
1. In-depth overview of the Critical Reasoning strategies and approaches to questions
2. Clearly divides the CR question types and provides specific strategy for each type as well as the pitfalls and common errors. You will also get to know how the CR questions are made.
3. Good quality GMAT-like practice questions
4. Created by the authors of the best LSAT books (LSAT logic section is much harder than CR on the GMAT; there is actually a decent amoount of overlap in this book with the LSAT book). Speaking of which, for extra hardcore (and absolutely not necessary but still), you can get the PowerScore LR book (comes with quite a few LSAT questions)

~~~ Weaknesses: ~~~
1. Could use more practice questions (more than mgmat though); you will need to find another source of CR questions such as GMAT Official guide 12 or the verbal supplement to the Official Guide (though the verbal OG has questions on the easier side)
2. Some explanations are too convoluted
3. No tests or online excercises/additional content

~~~~ My Suggestions ~~~~
- Read explanations to every question. Even if you got a question right, it does not mean, you solved it correctly (that is you used the correct approach or found all the shortcusts). You will be surpised sometimes and will pick up helpful tips even from explanations of questions you answered correctly
- Follow the actual strategies (DUH). This is probably the most common mistake people make - they start inventing their own approaches. Don't do it until you have a high verbal score. If you don't, just follow!
- If you don't have any Manhattan GMAT books, you want to get at least one, as each comes with access to 6 online CAT tests (these tests are worth the purchase). There is not a whole lot of value to get both Powerscore CR and MGMAT CR; the content is by large the same.
