This is the first complete English translation of Rav Chayyim of Volozhin's Neffesh Ha-chayyim.
Rav Chayyim was the creator of the modern yeshiva and the primary student of the Vilna Gaon. He was a master of both the revealed and hidden Torah.
Section one is about the nature of the soul and man's role in creation. Section two is about prayer, its true nature as directed meditation and what prayer really does in the context of God's plan: bind the worlds together and nourish them from above. It also describes how the process of repentance operates in re-establishing one's connection to God. Section three is about the nature of God's presence in the world, reconciling unity and duality. The Chapters section between sections three and four addresses how the evil inclination strategizes to divert us. Section four is about the special nature of Torah and the importance of our involvement with it.
This translation is extensively footnoted and explains many of the text's kabbalistic concepts.
For reference, this book includes the complete 1837 Hebrew edition.

EASY to Read with a new translation approach - Jewish theology at it's best

The Soul of Life by Rabbi Chayyim of Volozhin is a new translation of Nefesh HaChayim, translated by Rabbi Eliezer Lippa Moskowitz.
As the translator says in the introduction, Rabbi Chayyim's work focuses on man's nature and purpose, how prayer is an expression of that nature and purpose, how - while the nature of the Infinite Creator is essentially unknowable, His manifestation in creation carriers with it a mandate for mankind, and how involvement with Torah is the fulfillment of man's purpose and the vehicle of his connection with G-d.
It is the Vilna Gaon's response to Chabad's Tanya, and filled with kabbalistic and mystical insights that give a theological foundation to Judaism.
This translation is a completely new work that differs significantly from previous translations. First it includes and translates ALL portions of Nefesh HaChayim, specifically including the kabbalistic portions.
The second, the translator annotates confusing words and concepts, providing an explanation of difficult concepts and obscure words and/or sourcing ideas, concept and words themselves. He does an excellent job explaining both concepts AND pointing to sources - not as in saying "book/sefer such and such, chapter such and such", rather giving a source passage and context.
The translation is a modern English translation, presenting Hebrew words (where used) transliterated as phonetic English - a technique I strongly prefer.
The book is a soft-back paperback of 644 pages, and includes a full Hebrew copy of Nefesh HaChayim in the back.
The translator did a wonderful job, and I highly recommend it for those looking for Jewish philosophy, theology and approaches to G-d, man's purpose and the soul. It further provides a very interesting contrast between the Litvish and Chassidic approaches to these topics.
I really enjoyed it, the translator's approach making it as easy a read as such material can be. I highly recommend it.
And yes, this is a kosher Jewish orthodox translation.

Outstanding!

Read the version by Finkel and was frustrated by how often the translator refrained from including material. Kind of upset me to be denied so much content. This books has FAR more material that delves deeper into the concepts discussed. Because of that, and despite the excellence of the other publication, I'd recommend this one due to the vast amount of additional material it includes.

Clear and Precise

It's rare to find a translation precise enough for philosophical work that is this clear and readable. I cannot think of a more accessible guide to Orthodox Jewish Thought in the Lithuanian tradition. HIGHLY recommended!
