Mai Chao is a Hmong-American artist, writer, and teacher. Her family came to the United States from a refugee camp when she was ten years old. Absolutely beautiful ~ don't miss this one!!

This is a beautiful story, written from the multiple perspectives of Son, Mother, Grandmother, and Grandfather. Each "storyteller" brings their unique perspective which draws the reader deeper and deeper into their rich and complex lives. The author beautifully weaves their stories together to form an inter-generational, intercultural story of love and survival.

I love, love, love this book. It is beautifully written, and the characters come alive as you follow their journey (and gain plenty of historical knowledge) from page to page. I will be using this in my classroom with my middle school students, but I loved it for myself as a reader as well.

Beautifully written

The novel is elegantly written as prose. It is full of beautiful imagery, delicately written, and brings you through a myriad of emotions throughout each family member's journey. Each family member has their own voice and I left with a much deeper respect and glimpse of understanding into the Hmoob/Hmong people and their traditions. I appreciate the family's strength in bringing their story to share with us. One part of me would love to hear the recordings as well, but can only imagine how personal those would be.
It is so well written, I couldn't put it down, and will likely read it again soon!

About the Author
Betty Waterton (1923-2012) was the author of nineteen children’s books, including the Quincy Rumpel novels and a number of well-loved picture books. Over the course of her writing career she traveled all over Canada giving readings to children. For many years she lived on Canada’s West Coast, where A Salmon for Simon, her first picture book, takes place.

Ann Blades is one of Canada’s leading illustrators. Her distinctive watercolors appear in many children’s books, including A Salmon for Simon, which won the Governor General’s Award for Illustration and the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Award, By the Sea: An Alphabet Book, which won the Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Award, and A Dog Came, Too by Ainslie Manson. She is also the author and illustrator of Mary of Mile 18, for which she won the Canadian Library Association’s Book of the Year for Children Award. Ann returned to teaching in 2001 and now teaches kindergarten at an inner-city school in Surry, British Columbia.

Teaches compassion, respect, and love for nature

Simon has been trying to catch a salmon all summer long. When he finally has the opportunity to catch a salmon trapped in a hole made by clam digging, he decides the fish belongs back out in the ocean. How he makes the effort and succeeds in freeing the fish is inspiring to young readers. Within the story is a short, two-sentence description of the salmon cycle that readers can understand, and a description of the tidepool life. I'm so happy to see this book still in print! It was one of my son's favorite books when he was little. I highly recommend it to parents and teachers.

realistic teaching of love of nature

Agreeing with the previous review, I would add that Simon's perceptions, reactions, and actions are realistic for an 8 to 10 year old boy. Also admirable are the low-key presentation of Simon's determination and persistence--just as in the best folk tales he does what he has to do without any self-consciousness of heroism. The illustrations are very expressive but the perspective is a bit shallow--but this won't bother children.

Whole the book was written for bicentennial of 1976, the teachings on the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Gettysburg Address are all applicable for today.

Third Edition is Good But Not Great

New technologies like Google Analytics change so fast. I purchased the third edition of this book from among a group of three or four books on this subject because it was the newest release. A second consideration, for me, was that I wanted a book specific to Google Analytics rather than a book focused on the larger subject of Web analytics. I wanted a book that would point me at the important features of this tool without reading an extra 300 pages of analytics theory.

This book delivers as a quick start guide and reference to Google Analytics, but it also has some minor flawed. The coverage of advanced applications of Google Analytics is good. It presents clear examples of how to use all the features of Analytics, and puts all those features in a larger context. The book is both a blueprint for setting up your site analytics, and a reference you can revisit later. That larger context of how to set up your first analytics program is what makes this book worth buying. There are plenty of topics on the Web about using Google Analytics, but you don't get a good guide to the big picture of how to set up your analytics program from a bunch of disparate topics scattered around the Internet.

This new edition has some flaws. Especially in the first third of the book, some topics aren't very well written. For example, in the introductory section of the book, where they compare Google Analytics to log file analyzers, some of what is said seems to be wrong, and the information on setting up your tracking code is a bit outdated. Minor problems but worse than what I would expect in a published book.

Bottom line, it serves the purpose of an introduction and guide to Google Analytics. I'm using it.

A good book that explains Google Analytics in a really good way.

Two things i have against the book:
1- Doesn't really say much about web metrics.
2- Google Analytics is a product that move very fast and I don't think there is a book that can handle that.

My advice: read the book but keep your self busy with the tool it self for better understanding.

I purchased this book because I manage the analytics account for my company and really wanted some helpful assistance for using the more complex functions of analytics - like event tracking and custom reports. Unfortunately, this book assumes a higher level of knowledge of javascript and web-lingo than I currently have, and just doesn't break things down as much as I was hoping.

About the Author

Wayne Cascio holds the Robert H. Reynolds Chair in Global Leadership at the University of Colorado Denver. He has authored more than 150 journal articles and book chapters and 24 books. In 1999 he received the Distinguished Career award from the HR Division of the Academy of Management. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Geneva (Switzerland) in 2004, and in 2008 he was named by the Journal of Management as one of the most influential scholars in management in the past 25 years. In 2010 he received the Michael R. Losey Human Resources Research Award from the Society for Human Resource Management. His work is cited regularly in the business press. Dr. Cascio is a Fellow of the National Academy of Human Resources, the Academy of Management, and the American Psychological Association. Currently he serves as a senior editor of the Journal of World Business .

John Boudreau is Research Director at the Center for Effective Organizations and Professor of Management and Organization in the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. He is recognized worldwide for breakthrough research on the bridge between superior human capital, talent, and sustainable competitive advantage. He is a strategy, human resource management, and talent advisor and educator in organizations ranging from early-stage companies, to government agencies and Fortune 100 organizations, to large multinational companies. Dr. Boudreau has published more than 60 books and articles, and his work has been featured in Harvard Business Review , The Wall Street Journal , and Business Week . • Annotations now appear in the margins of the text, and are clearly distinguished and classified into several categories according to their purpose, including: stop-and-think, definition/concept, and outside comment from the text’s editors.

Baker and Bonjour lead you step-by-step through a survey of western-tradition analytical philosophy, full of humor and insight, excellent primary sources, and unbelievably lucid commentary. Their method is very accessible, and even a raw beginner can quickly find him/herself immersed in philosophical inquiry without feeling lost. They take a topic the average American finds very esoteric, and show not only how relevant it is, but how anyone can do it. An excellent choice for someone who wants to get a grip on philosophy but feels daunted by traditional approaches, or wants to learn on their own.
