loved the mix of fantasy and reality

I was assigned to read "Red Card" for my community college composition course. After reading the descriptions of the other stories, I purchased the ebook because I am a fan of speculative fiction. What I loved the best about each story was the nice blend of sci-fi/fantasy mixed with real characters and situations that could be real. Alarms ended up being my favorite of the stories because like the heroine, Cara, I often wish I had superpowers. I look forward to reading more of Mr.Gilbow's work because each one of these little stories, including the assigned one, were fun reads.

I bought this for the first story, Red Card and really loved the premise although I felt it ended a little weakly its a great idea for a story. The other stories are also good, not great but I think if you enjoy military stories and pirates and heck, good short stories in general you should give this one a try!

Terry Wardle has written a most insightful and helpful book. He delivers us from fruitless shoutings at fear itself and takes us to its roots in what he so rightly calls "the dark places of the soul" and the "desert." He calls us to vulnerability and corporateness and gives much needed practical counsel about how best to allow brothers and sisters to meet us in the hurtful depths to bring healing and freedom from fear. Most appealingly, he takes what everyone knows, that "perfect love casts out fear," and brings it out of platitudes into effective practicality. I liked especially, his catalogues of the lies that entrap us, and his use of the Word of God and the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ for healing. This book is a must for Christian counselors - and any lay Christian who is called upon occasionally to help someone else out of the pits of fear - and its depths of panic -- John Loren Sandford, co-founder, Elijah House, Inc.

Wardle doesnt just offer a formula for dealing with fears often paralyzing effects. About the Author
Terry Wardle, formerly executive director of Alliance Theological Seminary in Nyack, New York, has a D.Min. from Fuller Theological Seminary. Wardle, the founder of Spring Meadow Retreat Center in Northern California, is an associate professor in the Christian Ministries Department at Ashland Theological Seminary. He is also the author of Draw Close to the Fire: Finding God in the Darkness.

An incredible book of Truth!

When I picked up this book, I was interested in just browsing through it since I know Terry Wardle's children Aaron and Cara. I hadn't really intended on buying it, after all, I am on medication for my anxiety attacks and that is working just great for me! After 20 years of refusing medication, I have finally given in and found my answer, "it's a chemical imbalance" I've been telling myself... and anyone I want to justify the anxiety to. But as I began to 'just browse' the Lord began revealing things in my life that I needed to see, DESPERATELY! In this book, Terry speaks such plain truth, truth that I had never realized. I've always been adament about not blaming my abusive mother for my anxiety.But,the way that Terry presents it in this book is not placing blame, he is stating facts! And one of his most driven home facts is, "Perfect Love Casts Out All Fear" and the only perfect love on this planet comes from our Lord Jesus Christ! Even if my mother was as perfect as a human can ever get, she still is not capable of PERFECT LOVE. That is only given by Jesus! This book has encouraged me to seek the Lord even deeper in my life, and to get off the Paxil medication! Praise God!

Full of truth and wisdom

I was most impressed with this book. I literally stumbled across it because its title is very similar to a website on the same subject. His truths are wonderfully accurate.
Having battled fear and panic most of my life, his words hit painfully true in my heart--the only way to overcome fear is face it head on with God holding you close all the way through. A great read. I recommend it highly.

More like a lovely dirge that the blues, this novel, is set in 1989, just as Berlin's East-West divide is fading, features Frank Lehmann, nearly 30, examining his slowly dissipating track. He lives in a studio apartment on the West side, works at a bohemian Kreutzberg district bar, has moderate drinking habits and various romances: he judges himself content. However, a tension between Frank's self-assessment and what we see of his actual encounters drives this gentle book forward. Episodic chapters like "The Dog," "Mother," and "A Late Snack" cover precisely what their titles name, in a manner that mirrors Frank's what-you-see-is-what-you-get nature. His inchoate affair with a beautiful chef named Katrin never quite turns into a full-blown relationship. The closest thing he has to a best friend, a sculptor named Karl, is deeply unstable. A trip to the East with an envelope of family money goes lightly awry. By the time the Wall actually falls, "Herr Lehmann" (as friends jokingly call him with mock formality) has made no decisions of any sort, despite very involved internal negotiations. In most books, Frank's Warholian flatness would come off as pretentious or thin; here it is sweet, if a little cold, and the incidentals of old West Berlin make for a nice backdrop. (July)

The lead singer of a German rock band tries his hand at fiction with hilarious results. Herr Lehmann, as his friends have taken to calling him in deference to his approaching thirtieth birthday, has been tending bar for nine years in a hip if seedy section of Berlin. Proving that slackers are the same the world over, Lehmann uses what little energy he possesses to duck his parents, recover from his frequent hangovers, and, in general, avoid serious commitments of any kind. But over the course of a few crucial months in 1989, he falls in and out of love with a beautiful chef; engages in absurdly comic encounters with a menacing dog, bureaucratic customs officials, and a rule-bound bus driver; and comes to the aid of his best friend, who suffers a nervous breakdown. And, in the anticlimactic finale, he witnesses the fall of the Berlin Wall. Deadpan dialogue, an overwhelming sense of ennui, and spot-on descriptions of countless dreary bars give this first novel its remarkably rich atmosphere. Great novel

I don't want to say much here, other than to challenge T. Ross's review, which might scare readers away and thus deny them from experiencing this author's clear voice and sarcastic view of the world. You don't need to know Berlin to understand this novel; you need to know (or be able to imagine) what it feels like to be a simple, regular person who feels uncomfortable with a society that doesn't share your values or seems to be chasing after some sort of higher happiness that maybe just doesn't exist. The title character has bite, and falls into the great tradition of slacker heroes dating back to Erich K�stner's "Fabian" (1931) and Goncharov's "Oblomov" (1859).

Great Book (Herr Lehmann)

One of my favorite books. You might get more out of it if you understand a bit about German culture.

Calling someone "Mr." and using the informal version of you is a contradiction in German. Combination of formal and informal. When Frank's friends start calling him Mr. Lehmann when he turns 30, it is a bit joke.

I highly recommend watching the movie (Herr Lehmann). One of those few examples where the movie really represents the book well. Plus, it has a great soundtrack! Herr Lehmann [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.2 Import - Germany ]
