They died with Custer.
By Atheen
This was a superbly written volume outlining the archaeological reclaimation of the battlefield site of the Little Big Horn. A military archeologist (Scott), a forensic archeologist (Conner), and a forensics anthropologist (Willey) combined talents to preserve and identify the material evidence of the events that took place there after a wildfire stripped the scene of vegitation and exposed the site to erosive processes and human curiosity. The book details: 1) the history of the 7th Cavalry, including among other things, the age of the soldiers, their origin, and length of service, 2) the efforts to identify individual soldiers and the location of their fall in battle, 3) the effect of the rigorous life on the frontier on the health of the soldiers, 4) etc. I found particularly interesting the efforts to reconstruct the facial features of some of the skulls in an effort to identify the remains with specific people. This is a good text of archaeology at work.

A Very Thorough and Precise Study
By Lawtonka
Among all of the books I have on the archeaology of the Little Bighorn, my library would not be complete with out this one concerning the findings from those digs.

It is well written. It is very technical and not the kind of book a causual reader would enjoy. It is , however, the kind of book a very serious student of the subject will enjoy. Although I was not present for any of the digs as a volunteer, I have kept up with them by purchasing many other books related. I have visted the battlefield several times of the years and even met a few of the poeple mentioned in the book. This all of course, makes it of special interest to me. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone with a very serious interest in the anthropology concerning the members of the 7th U.S. Cavalry who participated in the battle in 1876. There are some very important comparisons with other remains that were studied from several other areas of the Western expansion to arrive at a picture of what these men were really like. As the book concludes, this was not a period that was quite so romantic as many people have imagined. It was a very tough life in a harsh environment. For the advanced "Custer Buff" or historian, this is a must have book.

A little dry at times but still very good
By Joe
I enjoy all books pertaining to the classic story of Custer's last stand and love learning new details about the event. The author presents a lot of new details (At least for me anyways) and statistics that help bring several of these troopers back to life. One thing I did not know was how hastily the bodies were buried (If you could call it that) and over several years. How times have changed. As an enlisted person I cringed at some of the descriptions on how almost all of the officer bodies were identified and recovered for burial elsewhere while the poor enlisted man had some dirt heaped over him. Such is life. :-)

I gave 4 stars because sometimes it seemed like the some of stats were repeated but still a very good book.

This book is astonishing!
By A Customer
If you buy only one book on astrology, make it this one. I have read and enjoyed many books on astrology, but never before have I been as consistently amazed by the accuracy of insight into the personalities of people that the authors have never met. I think even many long-time astrologers will be startled by how good a portrait one can draw knowing only the Sun sign and Moon sign.
I doubt that any astrology text could be 100 percent accurate--occasionally there's a few false notes, and once or twice the reading has been a complete miss. But in the large majority of cases, I have found that the analysis of each Sun/Moon type reads like a description written drawn by a close, insightful friend of the subject--describing specific qualities that would not apply to most people.
I must have 75 astrology books on my shelves--this is the one I'd recommend first, to a beginner or to a pro.
P.S. Charles and Suzi, how about writing a book describing Sun signs in each house?

Best Book on Sun / Moon sign combinations
By A Customer
Contents summary: Interprets all 144 combinations of Sun and Moon sign in the birth chart separately (420pp). Introduction, including discussion of the Sun, Moon and the elements (46pp). Tables of precise Sun and Moon sign change times, and time zone corrections (96pp).

Charles Harvey, a leading astrological scholar of the later 20th century, died a couple of years ago aged not far from 60, but left behind this modern masterpiece of properly researched basic natal astrology, which originates in the study of real people and draws as much detail out of each of the 144 Sun/Moon combinations as could be hoped for. The interpretations are each substantial in length but concise and packed with observational detail, building very significantly on Grant Lewi's pioneering treatment of the combinations from the 1940s. They inevitably round people up and sometimes typecast the extreme manifestations of each combination a little over-assuredly. They are of course subject to the modifying influence of non-Sun/Moon sign factors in the birth chart, but they come as close as they can given their scope. Indispensable reference book.

did Charles Harvey read my diary??
By christine freeland
I was at a party, when a friend cracked open this book. One by one, we each calculated our moon signs (which none of us had even heard of before). chart was super easy to read. And we were all almost in tears, over how acurate the descriptions were. Each description is only 2-3 pages, but soooo right on.
I'm suspicious of astrology, so i read some other descriptions and they were not me at all. So, i feel pretty confident that it is not just worded so everyone can relate.

Surpassingly Intelligent and Erudite
By Thomas Plate
I have decided to add this superb volume to my short list of required reading for my undergraduate course "The Future of the UN," in which the issue of reform of the Security Council is pivotal. This book is very nicely written and extremely well thought out, by a keen observer of the total UN organization without losing his perspective of realism. TOM PLATE in Los Angeles

Who Was Adam: A Creation Model Approach to the Origin of Humanity, by Fazale Rana, Hugh Ross

Who was Adam? Was he the result of still ongoing natural processes or a unique creation?

Observations seem to validate at least some aspects of evolutionary theory, but long before Darwin a man named David discerned that there's more to humanity than nature alone can account for.

In the original publication of Who Was Adam? (2005), biochemist Fazale Rana and astronomer Hugh Ross discussed cutting-edge research in junk DNA, the human fossil record, human and chimp genetic similarities, and more. They proposed a new scientifically testable model for human origins.

This robust 10-year update provides rigorous testing of the evolution and creation scenarios. New discoveries in genetics and paleoanthropology, especially, provide helpful evidence. How has RTB's biblically aligned model for human origins fared? Can human evolution be declared a fact? Or does a creation model make more scientific sense?

Groundbreaking Study in Human Origins
By OtherWorlds&Wisdom
Ten years ago, the first edition of this book became one of the most thorough treatments of one of evolution's most serious problems: The origins of man. For decades, evolutionists have tried to piece together nonsensical claims from bone fragments, talk around the genetics that point away from common ancestry between humans and other hominids and so on. Rana and Ross pulled together the science and proposed a new scientific model. The level of science was unheard of in "creationist" circles and the model was something not even design theorists have managed to do. Since 2005, the discoveries and advanced in genetics, fossil finds and related fields has been immense. Anyone who thought little was left to learn were quite surprised at the past decade. This new edition adds those new finds, debates and conclusions. They also analyze where their model was correct, wrong and needed adjustment. They don't fear controversy and rational debate. This sets them apart from many evolutionists and creationists who refuse change no matter the evidence and replace the scientific method with personal philosophy. Truly a top shelf study on human origins, regardless of one's starting point. See also The Cell's Design, Origins of Life and Signature in the Cell.

Worth Reading the Update- Some Questions Remain
By J.W. Wartick
Who Was Adam? by Fazale Rana with Hugh Ross is a major work on human origins from the group Reasons to Believe, an Old-Earth Creationist think-tank. This edition, the 10-Year Update, features over 100 pages of additional material analyzing recent discoveries.

The book is organized in such a way that the first two parts are the original book, while the third part is all new material and analysis. Rana and Ross do an admirable job surveying an immense amount of scientific material related to human origins. They present what they argue is a scientific, creationist model (called the Reasons to Believe model [hereafter referred to as the RTB model]) on human origins. This model includes predictions and testable hypotheses. For example, one of the main predictions is that humans–homo sapiens sapiens–are utterly unique and that their cultural capacity will turn out to be unmatched. Thus, any alleged ancestors of humans will not demonstrate continuity of culture and the like.

They take as confirmation of this prediction the notion that biologists have not managed to put together a solid order in which to place the fossils that are alleged to be human ancestors. Without any such family tree that can be confirmed, the notion that humans evolved, Rana and Ross argue, remains a theory and the question of human evolution is not a fact. They conclude this after having looked at a number of major fossil finds while identifying difficulties with dating them, difficulties with taxonomy and identification, and more.

The updated portion of the book is significant. Those wondering if it is worth getting for this update should know the answer is in the affirmative. There are over 100 additional pages filled with analysis of more recent discoveries and how they impact the RTB model of human origins. To their credit, the authors frankly admit areas in which their predictions were mistaken or their model is challenged. Perhaps the most interesting section is that in which Rana and Ross analyze various behaviors thought to be evidence of early culture among hominids and the like (chapter 23). They show that these behaviors might be anthropomorphism of animal behavior. The chapter on junk DNA shows how scientific discovery has confirmed one of the predictions of the RTB model, and the concluding pair of chapters analyze arguments for and against the RTB model and its viability.

One critique I have is particularly evident in the original work (not in the expanded materials, though), is the occasional use of pure rhetoric to try to make a point. For example, in discussing hominid and homo fossils, Rana and Ross argue that the connections between these fossils has not been established. They therefore conclude that “Without these connections, human evolution cannot be declared a fact but remains a theory” (42). I find this type of wording unfortunate.

Some of the other reasoning behind the RTB model seems possible to go either way (i.e. towards evolutionary theory or the RTB model). For example, Chapter 6 outlines a number of conditions which are to demonstrate humans arrived at the just-right timing for human civilization to flourish–something the RTB model would predict. On the other hand, the authors state the evolutionary model would not necessarily predict this. However, it seems that–from my admittedly limited understanding of biology–the evolutionary model would also predict something similar because life adapts so well that if there was a “just right” circumstance for a type of life, that life would be selected for. Whether this is accurate or not is a different question (and whether I have it right), but it doesn’t seem like this is necessarily evidence for RTB over and against evolution.

The difficulty of evidence that could go either way is one of the biggest difficulties throughout the book. Arguments are often made that because the RTB model allows for a specific piece of evidence, that means that the RTB model is still viable. But there is a difference between confirmation of a model and lack of disconfirmation. It would be more reassuring to have more specific scientific evidence in favor of the model rather than simply being able to be subsumed into it.

At times I also wondered whether certain aspects of the RTB model were necessary for them to defend. For example, the insistence on reading the ages of early humans in the Bible as literal periods in which humans lived for 900+ years. They acknowledge in the expanded section that there has yet to be confirmation of this and that findings so far challenge this idea, yet they continue to hold it as part of the model. I can’t help but think it is a superfluous part that doesn’t actually contribute much to the overall workings of their model.

Who Was Adam? is a significant work worthy of a careful reading by any interested in Christian perspectives on human origins. It provides Christians insight into an Old Earth Creationist perspective on human origins, while also providing enough raw information for readers to draw their own conclusions and formulate their own ideas. It will challenge Christians on their thinking and perhaps force people to re-evaluate their own theories. It is a valuable resource despite having what I see as some difficulties throughout. It is recommended.

The Good

+Frank evaluation of own model after 10 years
+Offers much insight into research of hominids
+Plenty of data means readers can form their own conclusions
+Genuinely valuable update with much new material

The Bad

-Some unfortunate reliance on rhetoric
-Methodological concerns

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I was not obligated to give any specific kind of feedback whatsoever.

Adam and Eve existed
By Craig K. Jackson
This is an excellent update of the previous book (same title) published in 2005. Instead of revising the previous book, the authors have added additional chapters in which they discuss new scientific findings and research in the past 10 years.

Their "Creation Model" (emphatically NOT "young-earth creationism") is worthwhile reading for anyone in search of the truth about human origins. It reconciles scientific findings (paleoanthropology, genetic studies of DNA and mtDNA, etc.) with a rational biblical explanation model.

Don't support quitters.
By Jacob Stebel
The list price for this collection is $100. $100 for 9 issues and change that never concluded the storyline or went anywhere with the original premise. I remember collecting each and every issue, including insanely-priced variant covers, when they were originally published, putting up with insane delays between issues and giving Joe Madureira the benefit of the doubt that each time it would take 8 months between issues, the wait would be worth it. Instead, he left fans hanging. I would have thought that perhaps someone who would have the nerve to give creative consent to release this overpriced, underwhelming collection would at LEAST come up with an extra issue's worth of content in an effort to wrap up the series, using the opportunity to make it up to the fans and at least make the collection feel like an entire story. Instead, you will be left flat and poorer for it. This series had so much promise and ultimately ripped off its loyal followers. Don't support quitters and waste more of your money on an incomplete story that will never be concluded.

Really?
By MidnightSpecialist
fortunately i already own all the issues, which i bought and WAITED for (groan), and this is great for those who haven't read the UNFINISHED story which is great.

My gripe is with the asking price of this book, it's ludicrous. I followed Joe Mad closely during his work on Battle Chasers and he even admitted in interviews that the reason he didn't finish wasn't because of deadlines and other projects, the man was just playing the Final Fantasy game of the time non stop. He made great money doing one shot art works for loads of gaming magazines so he never stressed finishing this series, really annoyed me when i read that.

The man is a visionary but that was just messed up on his part.

I loved this series
By Greg
Battle Chasers was a groundbreaking fantasy comic book that emerged onto the comics scene in 1998, when independent comic publishers were finally giving the big two -- DC and Marvel -- a run for their money. Despite the sporadic release dates of Battle Chasers' issues, the series won the hearts of many readers, only to disappear like a shooting star when Joe Madureira went on to pursue interests in the video gaming industry. I was one of those original fans, but as the wait between issues increased, I missed the final installments. So I recently purchased all nine comics in a digital omnibus edition which also includes an introduction and bonus material. Battle Chasers was intended to be an ongoing fantasy comic book series which centered on a quintet of characters:

Gully is the ten-year-old daughter of this world's mightiest hero, Aramus. Now with Aramus gone missing, Gully is in possession of her father's magic gauntlets that, when worn, give Gully incredible strength and invulnerability.

Garrison was once the most skilled swordsman of the elite guardians of the realm called the Paladins, and his oversized sword contains sorcerous powers. After the death of his wife, Garrison has become a drunk.

The cantankerous and grandfatherly Knolan is perhaps this world's greatest wizard and also seems to be privy to secrets that could be a danger to all.

Calibretto may be the last of the golems, great automated war-machines, which were ordered to be dismantled after the war. Despite being a sort of robot, Calibretto has more humanity than most humans.

The voluptuous mercenary-thief Red Monika is as deadly as she is sexy.

Joe Madureira, a.k.a. Joe Mad, is an astounding storyteller with both his writing and illustration. The world of Battle Chasers is an exciting blend of the traditional medieval fantasy, science fiction, and just a dash of steampunk too. (In fact, when doing research for this review, I found Battle Chasers described by a term I did not know of before: arcanepunk.) It's a place where magic and futuristic technologies co-exist. Fighters brandish flintlock firearms and bladed weapons. Clockwork automation is made possible for the few who have access to the rare element of mana to use as a power source. There are flying ships and beasts of burden, monsters and mythical creatures. Star Wars-like soldiers patrol outposts, while armored soldiers and knights make up the bulk of the armies. The graphic format is a great fit for this setting, and I can't imagine it working so well in any other medium.

Battle Chasers takes all the fantasy and science fantasy clichs -- and a few comic book ones too -- and exaggerates them to the point that readers can't help but lose themselves in the pure fun of it all. Madureira's artwork seems heavily influenced by manga, which I'm not usually a fan of, but the bold lines and exaggerated features are a perfect match for this story. The action "Joe Mad" depicts is adrenaline-charged. All the archetypal characters are made even more endearing when portrayed in an almost caricature-like fashion: Gully looks like a Precious Moments waif, Calibretto an archaic cast iron blast furnace on legs. Warriors are over-muscled, swords are huge, other weapons and equipment are bulky. And Red Monika, well, let's just say she has impossibly large... ah... "guns"? (I'm ashamed to admit it, especially at my age, but I think I'm in love with her.)

I absolutely adored this comic book series, and there were many other fantasy comic fans that did too. It broke my heart to see it end so abruptly. Please, Joe Mad, I beg you to return to comics and finish Battle Chasers.

War and Revolution: Rethinking the Twentieth Century, by Domenico Losurdo

War and Revolution identifies and takes to task a reactionary trend among contemporary historians, one that’s grown increasingly apparent in recent years. It’s a revisionist tendency discernible in the work of authors such as Ernst Nolte, who traces the impetus behind the Holocaust to the excesses of the Russian Revolution; or Franois Furet, who links the Stalinist purges to an “illness” originating with the French Revolution.

The intention of these revisionists is to eradicate the revolutionary tradition. Their true motives have little to do with the quest for a greater understanding of the past, but lie in the climate of the present day and the ideological needs of the political classes, as is most clearly seen now in the work of the Anglophone imperial revivalists Paul Johnson and Niall Ferguson.

In this vigorous riposte to those who would denigrate the history of emancipatory struggle, Losurdo captivates the reader with a tour de force account of modern revolt, providing a new perspective on the English, American, French and twentieth-century revolutions.
