The Carlswick Treasure

The Carlswick Treasure is book two in the series. I loved the first one, and in this one, the excitement continues. The characters are perhaps more interesting since they are already known. I am anxious to read the third in the series. Book two, like book one, comes to a satisfying conclusion but leaves possibilities. I like when a series of books concludes each volume with a stand-alone ending. The readers purchase of the next book is left to desire to read more about the characters and enjoy more of the author's storytelling craft. I don't feel coerced.

The Carlswick Treasure - A treasure of a novel.

In this, the second book in The Carlswick Mysteries series, writer S.L. Beaumont continues to develop the characters of Stephanie and James and their friends and families. Her writing is vivid, the storyline rocks along, her prose stimulates the senses - I can imagine myself in the bar, hear the band playing and smell the damp earth of the wine caves in the French countryside. Another great read, I thoroughly enjoyed it, looking forward to the third instalment.

Really looking forward to the third book now!

An excellent follow on to the Carlswick Affair, with the characters developed in that first book the story moves at pace, twisting and turning as it goes. Second books are always difficult and this does a great job of moving the story along while keeping enough doubt as to how the whole story will come to a close in the third book. Can't wait!

Race and The Writing of History redresses this imbalance, using Bernal's Black Athena and its critics as an introduction to the historical inquiries of African-American intellectuals and many of their African counterparts. Keita examines the controversial legacy of writing history in America and offers a new perspective on the challenge of building new historiographies and epistemologies. As a result, this book sheds new light on how ideas about race and racism have shaped the stories we tell about ourselves.

About the Author
Robert Hughes has been an art critic for Time magazine since 1970. His eight-part BBC/Time-Life television series, on which this book is based, has been broadcast throughout the United States on public television. He has received the Franklin Jewett Mather Award for Distinguished Criticism from the College Art Association of America twice, and he has authored the Art of Australia (1966); Heaven and Hell in Western Art (1969); and Nothing If Not Critical (1990), a collection of essays on art and artists.

More than an art book, by more than an art critic

I bought and read the first edition of this book after seeing the 1979 PBS series Hughes hosted, and I heartily recommend both book (which I still have) and the TV show if you can find it anywhere. Hughes' special brilliance is his ability to show the revolution in art at the turn of the 20th century as reacting to the revolution in technology and living standards and the rapid changes in every part of society -- the "shock" of this race to "newnesss" that really starting picking up speed a hundred years ago. Also unique and priceless is Hughes' puckish sense of humor and willingness to express an opinion - even a negative opinion - about art and architectural movements.
This is art history for the intelligent nonartist -- you will greatly enjoy it!

Superb, sensible introduction to modern art for the curious

Robert Hughes manages to do what no other contemporary critics can, see painting as a painter does, rather than as a writer--writing about painting. As someone who makes my living as a painter, I'm always frustrated by the clueless interpretations of art historians and especially critics. Often, they simply don't get it! They're looking for philosophic meaning in every nuance of a painting, when any honest painter would tell you, sometimes "It's just because it looked good like that!" I would highly recommend Mr. Hughes's book. It is a very sensible, insightful, and readable text. As a painter, I was very impressed by his observations and how he managed to communicate some idea of how painters actually create their work. (Critics would have you believe they start with a manifesto/theory/or other B.S. It's usually a lot less mysterious than that and Hughes does a great job of demystifying it. Also, it's a great book to show someone the purpose and value of art since 1900. Great Book!

This is a famous art text and justly so. If you are wondering "just what is this modern art stuff?", this book will help you. If you are thinking "I don't know much about art but I know what I like" this book will surprise you with its magnificent colour plates and images. Robert Hughes can write reviews for the art glitterati, but he can also write for the average person with an interest in Modern Art, and very well he does it too!

I am so happy with this book! I bought it for school, and when it got here, it was in beyond perfect condition. I was described as 'used'- however you would never know it! I am surprised at everything it has taught me, and if you are going to school for any type of conference and event planning- it is a must to have!

This affordable book accurately reproduces over 1500 standard Munsell colours. Developed over a century ago, and now standardized scientifically, the Munsell system organizes colours in artists' terms. When working, an artist or designer is continually asking how light or dark a colour is, whether its hue is warmer or cooler, and whether it is duller or more saturated. The Munsell system features just these properties: hue (red, bluish green, purple, etc.), value (light vs. dark), and chroma (dull vs. saturated). Artists need to see physical examples to choose colours confidently, so this book presents the universe of hue, value, and chroma in 41 Munsell colour plates. Controlling Colour with the Munsell System fills a niche by offering an extensive set of Munsell colours at an affordable price. The standard Munsell reference, X-Rite's "Big Book of Color," is extensive, but its price of nearly $1000 is beyond the means of many artists. The New Munsell Student Color Set (3rd ed.) is another excellent reference; though affordable, it only presents about 250 Munsell colours. Controlling Colour with the Munsell System is in the form of a binder, from which individual hue leaves can be removed. The individual colours are printed patches rather than swatches. The patches have been spectrophotometrically measured, insuring that their accuracy is at least on par with the other two books. For artists, designers, and painters who want a practical, hands-on, understanding of colour, Controlling Colour with the Munsell System is a unique working tool that would be an asset in any studio.

"Controlling Color with the Munsell System"

Product arrived promptly
The color plates look really cool, and invite exploration into the Munsell Color System

However, I'm left a little disappointed:
1) The binder used is too small for the amount of pages contained. This causes pages to be constantly coming loose from the binder rings, and potentially getting damaged, I had to transfer the contents to a larger binder, and now page turning and protection are optimized.

2) The accuracy of the color plates is questionable. The very first page of color plates are the Neutrals, and they registered noticably warmer than the equivalent colors on my "Munsell Neutral Value Scale" (made by X-Rite). I compared between the two only because I noticed the "neutral" color seemed wrong when I first turned to the Neutrals page.

The next few pages are the Reds (2.5R, 5.0R, 7.5R 10.0R). The first three pages of reds appear almost exactly the same in hue, even though the pages are clearly marked as 2.5R, 5.0R, etc. There just didn't seem to be enough, if any, hue shift from one page to the next. To verify, I pulled up an electronic copy of the Munsell chart, and examined the respective Hue pages on the electronic document. There was an obvious difference between hue values within the electronic document whereas my book demonstrated nearly no difference at all between pages. All four pages of the "Red" hues were shifted towards the orange hue.

I stopped perusing my new book at this point, as I saw no reason to continue using it since there seems to be something wrong with the product in my opinion.

Note: This book does include a disclaimer that there my be some minor differences in the the color plates accuracy due to various reasons. The disclaimer is very reasonable, and I kept this in mind when reviewing the product.

I realize the only way to get near 100% accuracy is to purchase the "Munsell Big Book of Color" for nearly $1,000. Since I don't want to spend that much for a color book, I'm willing to accept minor discrepancies with the color plates within my book "Controlling Color ...", especially since it cost less than $100.

Unfortunately, the first few pages of my copy of this book displayed discrepancies that were far too obvious (to me), and rendered my purchase basically worthless.

A Color System that Makes Sense!

If you work with color in any career or hobby this book is a must! I am an artist and predominately use pastels as my medium. The number of pastel sticks from different manufacturers and the non-standard nomenclature for individual sticks are confusing and in many cases redundant. I can use the author's highly accurate color plates to sort my different sets and reduce the duplicates.

I can guess what you mean when you describe a color as Deep Eggplant Purple, or if you say 10.0PB 1/12 I know exactly what color you are talking about! A full set of Munsell color charts can cost north of $1,000... at the listed price, this book is a steal!

you should be happy with this alternative

If you want an affordable alternative to the Munsell big book (which will set you back about $1000 Australian dollars--yikes! !) get this book. The reviewer who complained that the red pages don't come up to the same standard as the $1000 book may well be right. But if you don't have a lazy grand to spend on such a lavishly printed book, you should be happy with this alternative. It gives you a lot more colour pages than the Munsell Student Set book, which however, I would also recommend. The combination of the two should prove extremely beneficial to any artist. As a painter myself, I've gotten great use out of this book already, which a friend passed on to me. Understanding the Munsell system has taken the agony and confusion out of colour mixing for me. Once you get your head around this system it's much clearer and more logical than any other colour system I've studied in the decades I've spent studying and practising painting and drawing.

About the Author
Debra Bruch is a retired Associate Professor of Theatre at Michigan Technological University. She received her doctorate degree in Theatre from the University of Missouri – Columbia. Debra is an ordained minister in the Community of Christ. Dr. Bruch was active in the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, the national theatre association for the academe, especially with the Religion and Theatre Focus Group. She was on R&T's executive council for several years, was conference planner, and chair/focus group representative. Through ATHE, she founded and was the general editor for the peer-reviewed journal, The Journal of Religion and Theatre, from 2002 to January 2006. She is interested in the relationship between Australian culture and Australian drama, and has published and presented papers exploring Australian Aboriginal drama. By invitation, in January 2007, she traveled to Iran to attend the International Seminar on Religion and Drama on merit of her article about Jack Davis' The Dreamers. Debra also served as an adjudicator for the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival for several years. She has been included in Who's Who of America's Teachers and Who's Who of American Women.
