Great Basic Reference

I am a big fan of Nancy Zieman's books. She can distill difficult techniques with clear and concise language. In that respect, this book does not disappoint. There are also "Notes from Nancy" peppered throughout the book. The book would be great for a beginner's sewing library. The way Zieman presents her techniques adds nice clarity and, in some cases, new approaches to the techniques presented in other books.

Must-have sewing reference book!

This book has literally over 100 sewing and quilting techniques, organized alphabetically from A-Z! Nancy Zieman is the host of "Sewing with Nancy," the PBS show that's been in the air for, ahem, 29 years, so she knows a thing or two about sewing. It's one thing to know how to sew well, but it's another to be able to teach it well and Nancy is a thoughtful, patient and thorough teacher.

The book has step-by-step illustrations for every technique, from Applique, to Darts, Facings, Seams, Serging, Yo-yos and Zippers to name a few. Plus, it's a hardcover with a spiral binding, so it's easy to refer to while you're working and can lie flat right next to your machine or work space.

Definitely a perfect gift for any new or experience sewist, and a must-have for any sewing or crafting library!

I knew I'd love this book before it arrived and it did not let me down. I've been sewing off and on for decades and there are many things I will still learn from this book.
I know it will be my go-to guide for all future sewing projects. Nancy did a great job showing machine and hand-sewing methods. She included her personal tips which adds such a personal touch to the book.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who sews .. beginners and experienced alike.

Flying as Sebastian Kawa sees it

(This review is based on the Polish language edition published a week earlier)

The "inventory" of the stuff in the book includes stories on training,
on equipment, on particular competition flights, on mental preparation issues,
on (lack of) doping in aviation, on risk and safety decisions and issues.
The first part is woven around "life story" of Sebastian Kawa, the second
is a richly illustrated (by stories and drawings) instruction manual.

The book is the most fun to read. It is perheaps least about Sebastian Kawa himself. The first part ot he book follows Kawa sports (sailing and aviation) path, but it really is mostly about flying (not about Kawa) and all it takes to fly at the elite level. Which turns out (or so Kawa presents it) is kind of normal - you
have a more or less normal life, you do the things you love (with due consideration
for the everyday chores and duties), you practice all elements until you feel you
do them well enough, you keep your curiosity unfettered - and somehow on the
way you find yourself among the best.

Or so Sebastian Kawa tells it. Anyway, what strikes when reading the first part of the book (which some describe - I think inprecisely - as "autobiography") is extreme intimacy and directness - as far as aviation and sports issues are concerned. It is (first part) NOT any type of a flight manual or career guide. It has the athmosphere of a private conversation (the text formula is that of an interview) with a close and trusted friend. We do not read ready and smoothed with use opinions and stories, it is more like Kawa shares his current state of thought on the conversation subject.

Perhaps not by coincidence, the very "official book introduction event" at the Mountain Gliding School "Żar" had a similar structure. There was no "official talk" by Sebastian Kawa. But he was there, ready to talk in the room corners with total strangers about any aviation related issue, with both modest and "still fascinated and awed" attitude perhaps more expected from a student-pilot than from somebody holding a title or two.

I should write about the second part of the book, which is partially an advanced
manual (interspersed with particular flight stories), but this would be pretending that "I read and undestood and internalized all there is". I did not. Kawa had put, very accessibly, a lot of stuff there. Perhaps a significant part of the ten years of experience he says one needs to fly well, at least the part that can be put in words. I have no illusions that in a week I had available so far to read the book I took in any of that. I plan to read and reread it together with my training, probably over the years. So just the chapter titles (my rendering of Polish edition titles, sorry for bad phraseology):
"The art of flying", "Thermal flights", "Standard thermal flights", "Blue thermals", "Ordered lifts", "Wind and thermals", "Mountain wind", "Ridge soaring",
"Wave", "Search for lift. Varios", "Cloud observation", "Birds", "Dust devils", "Employing of thermals", "Interthermal flights", "Final glide", "Pair flying", "Lessons from (nautical) sailing".
All this interleaved with flight (rather remarkable flights) stories.

The book has a requisite modest portion of Blood Chilling Aviation (Tall) Tales
(ok, not "tall" in this particular case). I did like for example a story
of the author being outside of his glider when the tug started the takeoff run.
But perhaps most impact in this aspect (at least on a barely-initiated person like me) have the reminiscences of particular flights as remembered by the author, of which the book have a fair number. These stories have been included for various reasons I think, like to give the background to some advanced instructions of the second book part, or just to give a sense of flying for people not familiar with it. But most of these stories are about (at least so seems to me) non-trivial flights. Although Kawa spuns the stories quite casually, pretty much never mentions any danger, just presents us with a very personal insight into his "problem-alternatives-solution" thought process, my conclusion was "well, these flights are FAR from casual". Somehow without explicitly saying so Kawa succeeds in telling "you better treat flying seriously".

What "seriously" means - well, perhaps this is what the book is about. I think that "Sky Full of Heat" reads pretty much like good nautical stories - one could never be at sea, but still relish them.

Second part much better than the first!

I must say I am a bit disappointed with this book. About 60% is literally a transcription of an interview as one of the other readers has pointed out. It was an interesting read, but the same questions are repeated over and over again,, sometimes with contradictory answers about taking risks for instance. It might have easily been cut by half. I bought the English version since I no longer live in Poland and I thought my friends in Sweden could also read it. I have to agree that there are some obvious grammatical mistakes which could be spotted even by a non native speaker like myself. There are also other errors like "cloud bases can be a few thousands **kilometers** higher" :)

The second part of the book is more interesting though. I wish the format wasn't A4 as it's huge - why isn't there a Kindle version? I believe the high price of the English version is caused by relatively high cost of translation and limited number of sales.

Book changes your mindset on gliding

Purchasing this book I was not expecting too much of it, mostly looking at it as anyone who had the pleasure of flying with Sebastian would - a valued collectable. While the beginning is quite personal and not directly related to gliding, it shows a path that can lead a person to success - a path of no excuses for error. As a glider pilot myself I found valued lessons and crucial experience with tiny, yet extremely important comments on various aspects of gliding. This book is a practical vade mecum for pilots in general and a must have for everyone thinking about beginning their journey with wings.

Review of The Story of Sushi

The Story of Sushi: An Unlikely Saga of Raw Fish and Rice by Trevor Corson (previously titled, The Zen of Fish: The Story of Sushi, from Samurai to Supermarket), intertwines history with entertainment.

Corson focuses on the story of a young woman named Kate, described as a fun down to earth girl who was athletic and one of the guys until she broke a finger in High School. Unable to play sports anymore she became depressed and developed an eating disorder. As her depression and eating habits grew worse a friend recommended Kate try sushi. Hesitant at first Kate tried it and ended up loving it. Seemingly, more than the sushi, Kate enjoyed the attitude of the chefs who were comical and outgoing, reminding her of herself before getting sick.

As Kate continued visiting this sushi bar her overall health improved. As she pondered her future, she knew she wanted a career in which she could build friendships with customers, helping them to enjoy life. As if it was fate, Kate saw an ad for the California Sushi Academy. After a year of debating, she walked out on a leap of faith, leaving everything and everyone behind on a quest to be a sushi chef. The California Sushi Academy, California’s first Sushi Academy, consisted of an extensive 12-week training program. Corson explains how this is different from Japan where sushi apprentices spend 5 years or more just learning to make the rice before being allowed to handle anything else.

The sushi-related history and culture lessons carefully woven into Kate’s story were very interesting and informative. Corson brought his readers through sushi’s humble beginnings in Japan to its worldwide fame today. Corson did a good job painting a picture allowing his readers to “see” exactly what he was talking about. Scenes displaying Japanese culture like the auctions at the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, the history of Japanese knives and even the use of Japanese terms throughout the book tied the culture in nicely.

The history of the food itself was also interesting. The precision put into preparing meals requires lots of practice. The process of making certain foods like miso and soy sauce were eye opening and the natural history of the different types of fish and how to catch/farm, cook, and/or present them was informative.

Some of the other facts mentioned by Carson that were particularly interesting is that the California Roll was invented due to a Californian sushi chef running out of fatty tuna; the term mack daddy was derived from mackerels, and that the organisms eaten by flamingos are responsible for their color. Overall, the book was interesting and educational. Carson’s choice to focus on Kate, instead of others in the class, was smart because Kate being new to Sushi and Japanese culture, like many of his readers, was a nice relatable gateway to the “story of sushi”.

Point me to the next sushi bar please

This book made me crave sushi for the entire week that I was reading it. I’m a sushi fiend so this isn’t surprising, but it was a little odd when I was reading at 8 AM. This had been on my wish list for a long time.

As much as I enjoyed the info that I learned about sushi through Zoran, Kate, Marcos, Toshi and the others, I enjoyed the people. Although this was a work of documentary non-fiction, it read like a novel at times and the central figures were key. Toshi, the pioneer of American sushi; Kate the unsettled student; Zoran the teacher who is disappeared back to Australia midway through the semester; Takumi the former JPop singer. The Academy itself was a bit of a character as well.

Luckily for this sushi fiend, little beyond the author’s explanation of mold’s role in miso and sushi rice made me think twice about the food I devour. I fell in love with sushi at the tale end of my first stint in Japan but never really had a huge interest in its creation. I don’t think I’ve made sushi since a friend’s obon party in August… 2002! This book made me curious about some of the behind the scenes and probably made me a more educated consumer at the sushi bar. I learned a lot about the different fish without too much overwhelming detail

Disease isn’t the only problem. Humans like to eat yellowtail, but yellowtail also like to eat yellowtail.

Of the author’s comments on fish that’s the one I loved the most. I’m picturing carnivorous yellowtail on the sushi bar. I really enjoyed the background on the rice as its status in the US is so different to its standing in Japan.

I’m glad to see the Toshi’s California Sushi Academy is still going (despite an awful website) and to “see” Kate and company on Corson’s site.I look forward to reading more of Corson's work.

You never know...

Very well written book with interesting (real) characters (live people that is). Here I am having eaten sushi all my life and could not imagine the global infrastructure that goes into that one seemingly simple dish. And the history of sushi, now that is surprising; but logical - and no spoiler alert, read the book. Nor did I know how to properly eat sushi, having been a child of the mass produced super-market type of sushi. In reading the book, I considered being a sushi chef, but by the end after the descriptions of preparing fish, (which the author does with coolness of a well-trained surgeon) I decided there is a place in this world for a highly skilled vegan sushi chef and restaurant. But it won't have the same allure as biting into a piece of almost live meat from a creature carefully harvested and prepared by the loving hands of a real sushi chef. Read it, you'll like it! And you will appreciate sushi even more after you read the book.

Mind blowing questions! Amazing answers.

If you know the holiday of Purim, and are familiar with the megillah reading the story of Queen Esther, wicked Haman and King Achashveirosh. You've probably heard it so many times that the story is well-worn into your psyche and it's contours are familiar and comfortable.

Be prepared to have your comfortable lullaby shattered. Rabbi Fohrman book analyzes the story with fresh eyes and with truly magnificent writing that carries you effortlessly from chapter to chapter, drops bombshell after bombshell.

I know when I was first introduced to these questions, it made my entire reading and listening to the Megilah take an entire new life. How was I missing all these (now obvious) questions? They are right there on the page in original Hebrew - no manipulations - and begging for the questions to be asked.

And the answers? One word for them. Satisfying.

Answers that are connected down to the core, using the original words, drawing meaning carefully through reasoned analysis and connected to tradition.

Purim will never be the same.

Fantastic!

Rabbi Fohrman has done a fantastic job taking a seemingly simple biblical story and challenging us to understand it on a more sophisticated level. But he does more than just challenge - he provides insight and answers. And after understanding his answers, they became the only way to actually understand the story (how did we ever understand the story before?) and clearly identify the lessons we should learn from them. Rabbi Fohrman inspires us to study the Bible more rigorously which leads to greater understanding, satisfaction and desire to study further.

A great sleuth

Rabbi Fohrman's genius, shown now in this book, is in clarifying key questions about a Biblical text---the questions we have, or would have if we really paid attention---and then creating a narrative and set of answers to put everything in context, convincingly and elegantly. This book has been released just in time for us to read it and gain its insights before Purim.

1960s Game Of Symbolic Logic.

I'd love to play this game, but cannot find anyone else brave enough to undergo the learning curve. It is no longer fashionable to like mathy stuff for fun.

What the comes in the box (if yours looks like mine it is a VCT case, if you have an older copy it will be a dark blue vinyl-covered folder with foam inserts to hold the dice) are two sets of dice, red and blue, several playing mats, an egg-timer and a thick book of rules.

There are 21 games in the book that teach the various rules in easy bites.

The games teach symbolic logic. A "WFF" is a well-formed formula. The formulas in question are arrived at by rolling the dice. Each set of dice has two types; dice marked C A K E N R and i o p q r s.

A WFF is: p,q,r or s OR N followed by a WFF OR C,A,K,E followed by two WFFs. So NCKqrNAsNp is a WFF.

A proof is a set of legal operations that take axioms defined by rolls of the dice and derive WFFs using logical rules given in the book. Rules like "given p and q, Cpq" or "Given Cpq and p, q".

The games build in complexity and adding more rules as they go, and at some point one finds out that C,A,K,E and N correspond to logical operations (K is conjunction if I remember correctly, N is negation).

The problem used to illustrate the why of this game given in the rules is the so-called "Tardy Bus Problem", a logical puzzle once given to children of a certain age. If you remember truth tables and matrices of rules and axioms you'll have an inkling of what the game encompasses in very abstract terms.

The aim was to teach a student how to manipulate symbolic logic structures using a game framework. When this game was invented, people were supposed to enjoy math and symbolic logic was once thought to hold great promise for sorting out tortuous language in documents (contracts and so forth). That promise has never been fulfilled, but the symbolic logic techniques taught in this product are of great utility to any would-be computer specialist even today.

The product is awesome

Although I didn't buy this one, this looks just about how mine does now. Since there are no reviews, I thought I might make one so people out there, know how fun and useful this game really is. This isn't just any game. This is a game that requires some rather intensive rational thought. It is very entertaining. If you were to play this game for a few hours everyday for three weeks, statistics say that you can reach your maximum potential IQ faster via this method. On average, the children who played this game vigorously for three weeks in a row gained 20 IQ points. Remember, 100 is average. You can supposedly attain the "Superior Intelligence" rank if you were originally confirmed to have an IQ of just 100. Those 20 extra IQ points will put you in a much better place than you are now, trust me. This game is much more fun if played with other people for you can have a competition with them, making time go EVEN faster! The questions in the booklet are challenging and the materials of the dice (that has letter on them) are all good. The booklet is quite durable as well. I believe my father bought one sometime after it came out - he is 61 years old now and is quite intelligent. He qualified for MIT and MENSA but his parents couldn't afford it.

He played this game, and so should you! I'm going to do the same thing this coming June when I have plenty of time to VIGOROUSLY play this game to NOTHING! I shall defeat it, and SO SHOULD YOU! Nice intro to CentOS. An easy way to set a VPS with Wordpress up and running. A little too basic, though. Nothing about DNS so you end up using an IP address instead of your domain name. Some guidelines with this topic would definitely help

Great Reference! Author does a Great Job and Walking you Through the Setup and Navigation.

I have been setting up a variety of sites as part of my online business. After reading several books from this author on various versions of Linux, I have found that they are all very useful and to the point. I am not tech savvy, but have a background in making sites on WordPress. This book and the others provided me the information I needed to get going and make for a great reference as well. I now have several VPS servers running, one with CentOS and two with Ubuntu. I found Ubuntu a little easier to use, but this is fairly easy as well. I feel that my CentOS VPS does preform faster than my Ubuntu VPS and will likely use this book again in the future.

It not only has great advice on tactical strategies

This book has redefined how I approach competition in tennis and given me a new perspective on winning and losing. I currently play on three USTA teams and what I have learned in this book has transformed my game to a new level. I am more relaxed on the court and able to reach my potential mentally and physically. It not only has great advice on tactical strategies, it addresses the mental, emotional and physical balance of competition and helped me understand how to create a positive mindset on the court during my matches and practices. I keep this book in my tennis bag and review the highlighted sections before each match. Whether you are an avid tennis player or just starting out, this book with improve your game.

Great book for both tennis strategy and mental toughness!

This is a great book for anyone who wants to improve their games to the next level. The book has three sections:
1. Understanding Your Style and Your Opponents.
2. How to Beat Any Style
3. Quick fix Mental toughness tools.

I recommend reading mental toughness section first since these are the areas you don't normally learn from regular tennis lessons. It totally changed how I see and approach my games. My body movement changed dramatically having different mental state. It relaxes you, gives you more clear focus and consistency.

I use this book before and after my match to improve my game mostly mentally, but also to improve my strategy. Highly recommended!

This book is a terrific compliment to Grants classes if you are lucky enough to get to them. I have two copies - one permanently in my tennis bag and on the kitchen table. If you move it your in trouble! Applying the information in this book has elevated my game; not only my wins, but my enjoyment of the game, enjoyment of the learning journey, discovering I can do things I never thought possible because I simply didn't have strategies for what I was encountering in matches. This book captures both the physical and mental components of the game. Its concise easy to remember format enables the strategies to come to mind under the pressure of match performance. Get this book and see what happens. Fun!
