These three titles offer good options. Pearson offers instructions to build yurts, tipis, and benders all dwellings that consist of a collapsible, lightweight frame covered with cloth. Examples range from simple, temporary designs to much sturdier structures appropriate for year-round use. The examples are from all over the world, but brief instructions allow anyone to build a rather exotic structure inexpensively. The Sanchezes provide a wealth of information about the history and techniques associated with the use of adobe, an ancient material common in the Southwest. Twelve plans for both traditional and modern homes are included some of which look surprisingly conventional to the casual observer. This title will be of particular interest to readers in the more arid regions of North America. Mackie, a well-known author and educator of log home-building techniques, shows how to construct a log home in a low-impact, environmentally friendly manner. The homes shown are beautiful, with a great deal of exposed joinery; Mackie's step-by-step instructions and excellent illustrations show how everything is done (the author, who is in his mid-seventies, is still building homes a feat that many half his age would find taxing). These titles are recommended for comprehensive collections or for those with a regional interest in the particular technology covered.

Start Basic and Expand as Needed!

I agree with other reviewers that one of the most important features of this book is that in the 12 example plans presented, you can economically plan and build the Basic smaller version of 850 to 1000 sq. ft. and when the need arises, add on to the design. If any design meets your needs, you can purchase a working blueprint for $25 including postage and also included at no extra cost for the more technically minded, are a CD-ROM of a CAD version of the chosen working drawing that you can alter making this one of the most complete and convenient packages I have had the pleasure to use.

The one reviewer who said, "If you are looking for old traditional Adobe home plans this is not what you are looking for." was correct. But, if you are looking for a modern adobe home with passive solar traits that is well thought out and will lead you step-by-step, this is the book/package for you. Covers both traditional "flat roofs" and "gabled roofs".

A Great Start!

This is a terrific book to get started thinking about the adobe home you want to build, especially if you're planning on building "green." The floor plans and accompanying CAD generated images are practical and straightforward. The text covers the basics of adobe home building, including the advantages and disadvantages the owner may want to consider first. If you're considering building a modest adobe home, this book is an excellent place to begin. Working blueprints of the floor plans are available for a minimal cost as well should the owner decide to adopt one as is.

This was one of the few books that I have been able to find that has working house plans for adobe building. Although there are only twelve basic plans, they all have multiple configurations that actually make a wide variety of ideas.

A Keeper for Advent

I teach in a Christian school that makes a special effort to celebrate Advent before celebrating Christmas. In cooperating with that effort, I've used Jotham's Journey as a read-aloud book since finding it three years ago, twice with first graders (some editing was prudent) and last year with my seventh graders. Both age groups have absolutely loved this tale of the shepherd boy, Jotham, as he journeys to reunite with his parents. Jotham's adventure is action-packed; and while the author does take some literary license, there are plenty of historical facts that lend themselves to further discussion in the classroom. I'll never forget the first grader's eager response to the vocabulary question about a caravan: "It's a kind of van." I have had the best time using this book to entertain and educate the children during Advent. The season is characterized by a gradual build-up of excitement toward Christmas Day, and every chapter of Jotham's Journey (there are as many chapters as there are days in Advent)lends to the intensity. My first graders wanted me to start over as soon as I'd finished the story; my seventh graders were underwhelmed by every story I read thereafter. What else needs to be said?

A Newbie's Journey With Jotham during Advent

What a wonderful book. There is something so satisfying about sitting together in our living room, with Advent candles burning and the kids spellbound, listening to every word of this story. We are on our fourth week reading, and the kids still come running when we say it is time to light the Advent candles.

The story follows Jotham's journey to find his family after he gets angry at his father and runs away. He has many exciting cliff-hanger adventures that may seem contrived to adults but believe me, the kids won't care and will beg you to read the next day's section. Jotham ultimately ends up in Bethlehem and his life intersects the lives of Mary, Joseph, and the newborn Christ child in a lovely way that brings home Christ's divinity as well as the humanity of his infancy.

As a homeschooling mother, I really appreciate the way Jotham's Journey makes biblical times come alive. Even though there are very few illustrations in the book, the text provides many details about daily life that raised good questions from the kids, showing their engagement with the story and their desire to understand the setting.

One reviewer said this book is written for "conservative, evangelical Christians". I have to dispute that. Jotham's Journey IS a Christian story that tries to bring to life the true meaning of Christmas - the birth of the Savior. But presumably this is a given to a family that wants to celebrate Advent.

A couple of times the book emphasizes the importance of children being completely obedient to their parents/caretakers (Jotham's disobedience gets him into his mess), and it also refers to corporal punishment a couple of times as a natural consequence of disobedience. And there is some violence, which is used for the purposes of both evil and good. I suppose this could also be inconsistent with the moral beliefs of some families.

Otherwise I am mystified as to what the reviewer found as inconsistent with "liberal Christianity" or "an inclusive view of God's love". I don't know what the reviewer meant by "liberal Christianity", but I will say our family has a very inclusive view of God's love and we love this book.

This is our first year celebrating Advent. Previously, the holidays were pretty much a blur of decorating, wrapping, baking, and shopping, shopping, shopping. Christmas would arrive before I knew it and I would be exhausted, the kids would be hyper and focused on the presents. It occurred to me that from my children's perspective, Christmas was about gifts, decorations, and a frazzled mother.

One of the most effective things we've done to change that has been lighting Advent candles every night and reading this book by candlelight. It has been a simple and completely rewarding way to draw our family together.

Jotham's Journey - It is a day by day advent story of ancient Israel of a small 10 year old boy - filled with adventure and thoughtful commentary - drawing on history and psalms and old testament stories and Qumran and the star to weave a fiction that has my children mesmerized and begging for more -
we read the designated section each night by candle light - the advent candles and their own candle - they then go to bed by candle light entranced... and immersed in the season...
this is pure fiction - but so perfect for drawing in the 20th century modern kid - please try to find it and read it with your kids - it is so wonderful!

A good erotic sequel

This is the sequel to "Taking Care of Business" following the continuing romances of Leah and Brandon, and Kate and Dix, along with his interfering ex-wife Eve.

Pros: It's a good sequel with logical relationship development in keeping with the characters. You want to turn the page and see what happens. It's seamlessly and impressively edited, blending the two stories and voices really well (proofing needs work, but I nitpick). I liked the story, loved the characters (especially Brandon) and it flowed nicely. Loved the description of the Penny Pincher, the funniest writing in the book.

Cons: It had too much sex---Whoa, did I just type that? Well, some of the scenes felt a bit gratuitous, like there was a quota to fill. If the purpose of a scene is clearly to discuss Eve, for example, you wonder why they are having the conversation en flagrante delecto instead of over chocolate croissants at the Bellagio or while playing slots. Not to say there weren't lots of good sex scenes in here: New Year's Eve, the parent's basement, the dressing room were all great, and no one writes the nookie like Dane and Hart; but some of the scenes, especially in the penthouse, blur a bit and were all a little too consistently serious in tone for me. Maybe it's me, but dang, you're in Vegas, baby, throw your clothes on and stroll through the Venetian or something, you can talk at Wolfgang Puck's as well as in bed, and the food's better.

The ending after Vegas wraps up a bit too fast, but overall it's a good read, just not quite as strong as "Taking Care of Business".

Kate loves Dix but she hates his ex-wife Eve. Eve does anything and everything to make Kate's life miserable.

Kate's best friend Leah is in love with Brandon, but she's afraid of committing to him for a lot of reasons.

Eve's latest scheme and Leah finding a small velvet box tucked in Brandon's things, sends Kate and Leah fleeing to the ultimate get away destination - Las Vegas. Brandon and Dix are too stubborn and too in love to not follow their women. Some of what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas, but the good that comes out of a few days indulging in everything from buffets to public sex, comes back with them, including a new sense of what the couples want and don't want. Now, if they can just get the real world to cooperate, they'll have it made in the shade.

No Reservations is full of sex, romance, a little angst, several `I love you's', a lot of talking dirty, some public sex, and two really good stories too. Anyone who could put up with a woman like Eve and not completely lose their mind or haul off and kill her is a saint in my book. Kate is the perfect girlfriend. (as far as any red-blooded male would say.) She sends Dix to strip clubs, she loves sex, she's kinky, smart, beautiful, and fun. I learned a little from her. I admire Leah and Kate's confidence in themselves and their men. Kate is adventurous and a bit wild, while Leah is intelligent and in control. And they both know how to have fun. Dix is a little gruff and Brandon is a little more reserved, but they are both really hot in their own way. While I usually like dominance in men rather than women, there is something sweet, sexy, and very sincere about Brandon's desire to follow Leah's orders. He wants what she wants. It makes them happy and it turns them on. Their relationship is very genuine. On the flip side, Dix's light dominance in bed is hot as hell. There is a lot more fun than heartache in No Reservations.

Would have been better without Leah!!!

I usually love both of these authors books, but for some reason I didn't really like this book. I have reread this story a few times to see if I can change my mind; it has a great storyline but I just didn't like Leah!! Yeah I know she was hurt in the past, but the way she treated Brandon got on my nerves. I found myself quickly reading or just plain skipping the parts that involved them. I never felt that she loved Brandon and I thought that he could do better then her. She never treated him with any real respect and I don't know many men who would put up with her. I felt she only used him for sex and a maid. What sealed the deal for me was at the end when she was wondering where he was and saying she liked to come home to a clean house, her meals cooked and all her earns ran; she came off as a real *itch and if a man said that women would be calling him a a**. I was hoping she would change, but it never happened and she uses sex to control him and get what she wants. She seemed more worried about what he did to her ex than what had happened to him.I loved Kate and how she refused to let Dix's ex get away with any crap and how she always made his kids a priority even going so far as wanting to wait to get married to give them time to get through high school without causing anymore stress. The sex scenes are hot and plentiful. Kate and Dix really saved this story!!

Ever since he first discovered his love for writing while going to the Art Institute of Phoenix to earn his bachelors degree in Game Art and Design, Brandon Varnell has been writing as more than just a means of expression, but as a way to give his imagination life. Though this may be the first novel he has ever published, he has written many works of fanfiction...which unfortunately cannot be published because he does not own the fandoms they belong to. Brandon likes to spend most of his time reading tales of fantasy and fiction, writing tales of fantasy and fiction, watching anime and playing Zelda while dressed in Link cosplay. Don't worry. Give me more Lindsay!

I'm not sure what I expected with this work. The author kindly warned me it was something I was probably not used to reading, and he was right.

Manga and anime tropes galore! Fan service up the wazoo! The body language is over the top and, frankly, a bit much.

But I'll go back to the beginning.

Kevin Swift (one of the fastest runners in school - get it? Yeah) is coming home from his paper route one day when he stops to collect and care for an injured fox. His mother is nowhere to be seen - for some reason or other. She is never seen, although her wardrobe ends up being convenient.

Back to the fox. She has two tails and demonstrates amazing healing abilities. And then, a day later (two?) she transforms to a human form. This includes her tails and her fox ears although she still has human ears. Confused yet? How about her preference for nudity and her 24/7 horniness?

Also - ufufufuf? It took several chapters before the reader is told that is the character's laugh. I had honestly thought it was something earthier. Musta been all the nudity, etc.

Characters go over the top and the deck is stacked, piled high for the fox-woman, Lilian. Even Kevin's crush, Lindsay, is enchanted. Kevin does not object to a spell quite literally being cast over Lindsay, who I felt was a far more sympathetic character. While it was pretty obvious who was going to win (hint: that's not Lindsay on the cover), that much felt disappointing. I really was starting to actively root for Lilian to lose. Not necessarily go down in flames, but the thumb wasn't just on the scale. It was a whole village's worth of thumbs.

Eric, Kevin's best friend, ends up coming across as mean-spirited, vindictive, and harassing. Teachers are overly strict but this isn't their story, either. A bully who turns out to be something other than human was a little too convenient in terms of placement. That was sort of a get out of jail free card for the plot, to give it a means of making Lilian if not a heroine but to at least give Kevin a reason to keep her around. It also, without giving away any spoilers, sets up at least one of the sequels.

I get the author's love for the genre. The fourth wall bursting bits were great fun. I truly loved them! But they were overtaken by an annoyingly clingy character who I felt had way too much screen time.

I want to see more of Lindsay. She's real. She's got some depth, and she's got potential. But she was never going to be the star of the piece.

Astounding, Five stars isn't high enough.

This has been bar none one of the best books that i have ever read. Period. Yes people say that the whole plot of a guy meets a fox girl or some other Yokai that then falls for him. But no other book or story that I've ever read has portrayed the characters so well without over explaining ever detail. This story is hilariously funny, more than a bit sexy lol and I can say that its overall an amazing read. I can recommend this to anyone who is a big fan of this tip of thing, and even if you aren't, read it anyway be drawn into the world of us pure awesomeness. Five Stars isn't high enough i would give this book 100 if i could

a light hearted read for my daily bus rides

a light hearted read for my bus rides.. I went on to read the whole series as far as it exists in book 4. At some point I did find myself getting annoyed by the author repeating certain tropes over and over especially in book 4. I get the feeling it took off faster then the Author expected and some of it is rushed. Maybe a different editor could help if the series continues.
