A good book for those seeking fundamental understanding of financial analysis

This book and its accompanying CD is a valuable resource for those seeking a fundamental understanding of financial statements, their usage and signifcance. The chapters are well organized and walks the reader through various aspects of financial analysis. This book lays the foundations of fundamental analysis.

On the filp side, the language could be a little difficult to interpret at times (more Harvardish or Yaleish than common English)and can be a little uninspiring. The authors assume that readers have a basic understanding of accounting which can throw off some readers. But I guess if someone is seeking to get their feet wet in financial analysis, it is safe to presume that he or she will atleast have the basic knowledge in accounting.

Overall, this is a very good and useful book with neumerous real world examples of financial analysis at play. As I have mentioned before, this book lays down the foundation for fundamental analysis. I would recommend this book to all those who are currently persuing a career within the finaicial industry or corporate finance as analyst or aspire to become one - This book is a must read for you.

"Slogging" Defined

OK folks, here's a contrarian review of this book. Consider it an opinion which "balances" other reviews presented in this book review section. Here goes.

Webster defines the word "slog" as "to plod one's way perseveringly especially against difficulty; to plod heavily".

What an apt description of the effort required to read this book!

If you're engaged in the CFA curriculum, this book comes as a recommended (practically required) textbook. That's unfortunate because this book's various authors are inconsistent in making the material readable and understandable.

Yes, the book is comprehensive. Chapter topics include: Accrual Concept, Analysis of Cash Flows, Ratio and Financial Analysis, Analysis of Long-Lived Assets, Analysis of Income Taxes, Analysis of Financing Liabilities, Leases and Off-Balance-Sheet Debt, Pensions, Intercorporate Investments, Multinational Operations, and Business Combinations. Great stuff to know - practical matters to understand and master.

However, this book presumes a solid understanding of intermediate level accounting, and provides little or no review of these concepts before delving into the topical material. It makes learning more challenging, and when time is of the essence, that's problematic. So I found myself "slogging" through the course material in an effort to learn Level II material.

Supplemental reading is often required to make up for what the authors fail to teach effectively. Here's a tip: Schaum's Intermediate Accounting II has an excellent chapter #10 on Pension Accounting which will benefit you in your studies. Likewise, I have found other Schaums's Outlines to be very instructive and beneficial (consider reading my other reviews).

The CFA Institute would do well to consider recommending other Financial Analysis textbooks to cover the same material - a book that is more readable and user-friendly. One that's more engaging rather than one which requires heavy plodding!

Very confusing textbook

I agree with the more critical reviewers. I'm reading the book for the CFA curriculum and the (mandatory) assignments taken from it are a real pain. The ideas are introduced in the most difficult way possible, the graphical presentation and examples chosen only add to the confusion and in my opinion a reader who does not already have a solid grasp of accounting will simply be unable to follow. By comparison, the other accounting chapters from the CFA curriculum, by different authors, are written in a much more comprehensible (and stimulating) style.

I do not deny that the authors have a profound knowledge of the subject - but this is not enough in order to write a useful textbook. Clarity in presentation and didactical style are also essential, and the authors are unfortunately not very inspired in both items.I hesitated between rating the book with one or two stars but in the end I decided for one star - why be indulgent with authors that are experts in their subject matter but are unwilling (unable?) to put up the extra effort needed in order to keep a reader interested and motivated?

Here's an appeal to the CFA institute - keep the subjects in the curriculum but change the textbook. For instance, "Intermediate Accounting" by Spiceland et alia might be an alternative - it's also quite difficult and demanding but at least the student will be given a fair chance to understand - not just memorize and muddle through- the contents.

Immaculate scholarship

This is Cooper's second collection of essays. Most of the essays are on Plato, Aristotle or the Stoics, but there are also essays on e.g. the methodology of ancient medicine and Academic scepticism. Although there are four essays on ethics, most of the essays in this volume are concerned with epistemology or metaphysics (knowledge and nature).

Although most of the essays have been published elsewhere, many have been revised and expanded. There are some new essays too.

No fault can be found with Cooper's scholarship, which is immaculate, astute and meticulous. These essays may prove difficult for the beginner, however, but vill be of great value to those who already have some acquaintance with ancient philosophy. The volume will be of interest to classicists and philosophers alike and is highly recommended.

Compelling story, bad historical novel

While Morgan sets an interesting and compelling story, describing Constantinople in vivid detail and painting the Byzantine court in all its baseless greed and intrigue, his novel is as bad as an historical novel can get. Simply put, the author did not invest enough time researching the context and complexities of the Byzantine world; the novel is fraught with historical inaccuracies and anachronism. I am not referring to small details, but to errors so obvious and blatant that they deprive the novel of all credibility and act as a constant distraction to the reader, preventing him from believing and committing to the story and its characters. The list of historical errors, which I started listing at first, is long, but I will limit myself to the most fundamental mistakes. For instance, the Byzantines didn't date events from the birth of Christ (A.D. system), but from the Creation of the World in 5509 BC. Crusades weren't numbered until the 19th century, while the author and the book's characters constantly refer to the Fourth Crusade. The term 'Crusader' wasn't invented until the 15th century at least, although Western warriors are named as such by the novel's characters in a 13th century setting. Orthodox and Catholic are used to differentiate the Eastern and Western Churches, even though such denominations weren't officially used until the 16th century. Byzantines hardly knew about Catharism in the 13th century, while the author suggests that the Byzantine emperor Isaac II was a Cathar. Anna Comnena's 'Alexiad' wasn't know about in Western circles until at least the 16th century and thus the Doge of Venice couldn't have been aware of it in the aftermath of the Fourth Crusade. The characters' dialogues are more modern in their morality and considerations than they are medieval. Etc, etc -- the list goes on and on. It is quite disappointing that an author would give himself the pains to write a novel and attempt to make it compelling, without even attempting to make it minimally credible. Even Hollywood makes it a point to get a little more right. Morgan does have what it takes to be a good writer. He must however do more research for his future novels or avoid historical novels altogether.

Stunning

Everyone is well aware of the magnificence of Egyptian art at the time of the pharaohs, but what about the works of art that proceeded them? These are more simple forms, to be sure, but the elements of the great Egyptian masters have their foothold in this special time. This book embraces that era.

Pristine statues and masks, male and female figurines vie with statuettes of monkeys and other animals, amidst these pages. The funerary excellence at Abydos with its mud brick fa�ade is also fascinating. Some of the pieces, such as ceremonial palettes, are awash in intricately carved designs of animals and birds, writhing snakes and jackals. The excavations at Hierakoupolis were marvelous and I found the extensive section of notes at the back of the book and chronology to be extremely beneficial, as well.

This publication highlights the achievements of scholars and archaeologists dedicated to the study of Predynastic and early pharaonic Egypt.
Thoroughly researched and very good designed piece of work.
It was well written with the help of expert descriptions. Also, lavishly illustrated with excellent photos and easy to read.
The authors are to be commended for conceiving and producing this great effort.

I love history. Art on the other hand I usually can't focus. Then I found a fragment of this book on google books. Its art but offers more historical details than most history books. I had to buy it to read the rest. Me, who has never spent more than $20-$30 on book.

Outstanding book on a fascinating subject

As a student of aerospace engineering, I took a class in orbital mechanics - a truly fascinating subject. Like many others at the time, I was exposed to "Fundamentals of Astrodynamics" by Bate et al. As far as I know, people thought it was the best text available. However, it is no match for Curtis' book. Comparing the two made me somewhat envious of today's student. Orbital Mechanics offers great clarity, great solved examples, and surprising depth, considering it is an undergraduate text. To me clarity is of the essence and, to me, nothing provides more clarity than worked out examples, in particular if they involve realistic scenarios. For instance, one of the examples of this nature provides a step-by-step approach to determine the orbit of an asteroid from two observations. A great book I recommend to anyone studying orbital mechanics.

Digitalized the Wrong Way

The book itself has decent quality. However, in the Kindle version, all the equations are scanned images in low resolution. This combines with the blackboard bold font make it impossible to read pixilated equations.

Great content, poor printing, so think it through before you buy it

The book content is excellent. The depth and breadth of material is fantastic. The use of color in diagrams and examples helps a lot. Amazon will send you a black and white, print on demand copy of the original color version, which means you won't get the experience intended by the author and publisher. I returned my copy for that reason.
