Pleasures & Pastimes in Tudor England, by Alison Sim

While continuing the medieval tradition of tournament and pageantry, the Tudors increasingly read and attended the theatre, danced and took a keen interest in music. This text explores the pastimes of Tudor men and women, from all levels of society, both at home and at large. Both before and after the great religious upheaval of the Reformation, the festivals of the Church provided the perfect excuse for revelry; and weddings and christenings were then, as now, great social occasions. In addition to the entertainments of the Tudors, the autor sketches the history of Tudor dress and discusses Tudor homes, affording an insight into the ways of contemporary interior decoration. Covering the full range of entertainment organized and enjoyed by the Tudors, from card games to bear-baiting, the book shows that despite living over 400 years before the invention of radio or television, the Tudors did not live a mundane life.

Great Overall View of Tudor Enjoyments
By Rebecca L. Latson
In studying the Tudor era for my character role in a local Renaissance Faire, I ran across this book by Alison Sim during a search. It's a wonderful book divided into various chapters centering on separate items which made up Tudor enjoyments. Chapters in the book include clothing, architecture, reading, dancing, theatre, and hunting & games, to name a few. Ms. Sim's writing is not the least bit dry and makes the facts enjoyable to read about. It's a must for anyone like me who is studying the time period to improve upon their faire or SCA persona as well as to add to their knowledge in general.

What was it like?
By Alexa Porter
This is a bit scholarly but I love it - it TELLS you what went on! Each chapter deals with a different subject in detail, but easy reading Not a fluff piece, which some people might not like, but still not dull or stuffy. Very informative for those who really want to know what it was like!

Second City Confidential: The Black Experience in Chicago, by Paul Kersey

Chicago is ground zero for the political class that rules what’s left of America today. The “Chicago Way,” shorthand for political corruption and violence, has produced President Barack Obama, the half-white, inexperienced Senator whom the American voters elected to prove they were not racist. This book explains how this came to pass. Second City Confidential is the history of black experience in Chicago, which ultimately produced such political titans as Jesse Jackson, Harold Washington and President Barack Obama. It explains how Obama began his career as a “community organizer” in Chicago, mobilizing resentful blacks to seek concessions from the political system, and how he first ensconced himself in academia, then in the U.S. Senate, and now in the White House. In Second City Confidential, Paul Kersey, author of Escape from Detroit: The Collapse of America’s Black Metropolis, and VDare.com columnist James Kirkpatrick offer insights into why and how the streets of Chicago became deadlier than a war zone. It is a history lesson, one told without political correctness or academic buzzwords , which explains the economic conditions of majority-black areas of the city and why these areas have descended into what one police officer labeled “tribal warfare.”

Very interesting, provocative and well-articulated ideas, but needs major editing
By TL in Chitown
The book presents a viewpoint you wouldn't find anywhere near the mainstream discourse on race, crime and urban dysfunction in America.

While it is well-researched and quite articulate, it needs major editing. Sometimes the same sentence is repeated verbatim at different parts of a chapter. In general, chapter structure needs to be tightened. Punctuation needs to be re-checked.

Other than that basic editing nitty-gritty, this is a very worthy, gutsy, and long overdue contribution to intellectual debate in the country.

The Most Violent City in America -- And This Book Offers the Reason Why
By Steve Glass
2013 FBI stats show that Chicago is now America's violent city, with the highest murder rate. A population 1/3 the size of New York boasts a higher number of individuals murdered.

And guess what?

Almost all murder suspects are black.

"Second City Confidential" doesn't pull punches. It goes right for the TKO, providing details and an incredible number of footnotes that conclusive show the "sons of Obama" are the reason Chicago is America's most violent and dangerous city.

Almost racist, do not discuss it in PC setting
By Timothy T Boros
I learned about where Barack Obama came from.
He learned his politics in Chicago.
He is a creature of tough politics.
He plays to win only.
He will bring down the country to make his points.
Same as Chicago was ruined.

Confessions of a Hollywood Stunt Man (or It seemed like a good idea at the time!), by Jesse Wayne

Veteran stuntman Fred "Krunch" Krone, Stuntmen's Assn. co-founder and first secretary, treasurer, said "Jesse has written what no one has ever said or would dare say. It's a must read."

Jesse's attention to detail made this book hard to put down. As a youngster, I grew up visiting the sets watching Jesse work with my father (a veteran stuntman himself). Now being a stuntman myself for many years, it has been a pleasure to relive a lot of those historic days through Jesse's words. I’ve read all of the books by stunt performers and Jesse’s is the best. Great job Jesse! Veteran stuntman Vince Deadrick, Jr.

“If you would like to take a book trip through a day to day and year to year life of a stuntman, this is the real deal. The path is laden with egos, conditions, danger, personalities, talent, and lack of talent. I'm a thirty-two year veteran stuntman and Jesse took my mind out of retirement, and back on the set with this book.” Jack Verbois SAMP Lifetime Member

Not all stunt men are six-feet tall. Confessions of a Hollywood Stunt Man is the thrilling saga of a five-foot-four, 18 year old kid who became a stunt double for Hollywood’s most famous short men, women and children. In an adventurous, daring career spanning 40 years, Jesse Wayne details the many comedic and tragic incidents in front & behind the cameras, including a vicious murder of an 8 year old black kid on a New Orleans film location. When the Stuntmen’s Association of Motion Pictures was formulated in 1961, he documented its history as secretary, treasurer and board member.

Jesse appeared in over 500 TV productions and feature films, in addition to hundreds of live stunt shows. If this seems like a lot, it's because he began in the early days of Los Angeles' live television, when he was eight years old. His most exhilarating experiences was meeting and working with the greatest actors, writers, producers and directors of the 20th Century.

In 1959, Jesse became Mickey Rooney's stunt double at MGM. Continuing, he doubled small men, women, and virtually every child actor in Tinseltown. Jesse performed Fights, Car Work, Stair Falls, Bicycles, High Work, High Falls and Horse Work. Fire Gags became one of his prime specialties. He quit water stunts after the "Julia Belle Swain" riverboat ran over him in Tom Sawyer (1973) while doubling Jeff East.

Jesse also stunt-doubled The Three Stooges (Moe Howard and Larry Fine), Robert Morse, Kurt Russell, Red Buttons, Sir John Mills, Frankie Avalon, Kay Lenz, David Wayne, Leslie Caron, Barbara Stanwyck, Helen Hayes, Harry Morgan, Arte Johnson, Jos Feliciano, Johnny Crawford, George Gobel, Robin Williams, Gary Burghoff, Strother Martin, John Hillerman, Donald Pleasence, Mel Brooks, Don Johnson, Billie Hayes (aka "WitcheePoo"), Brenda Vaccaro, Barbara Rhoades, Pamela Austin, Lurene Tuttle, Eddie Hodges, Michael Burns, Buck Kartalian, William 'Billy' Benedict, Richard Bakalyan, Michael J. Pollard, and Mel Torm and so many more.

Jesse has also performed behind the camera as a first assistant director, cinematographer, videographer, director, gun coach, and just about every other job on a movie set.

What a ride!!!
By Rich Jones
I have known Jesse for many years, and have anxiously awaited the publishing of his book. Jesse is the real deal, and the book he has written reflects his experience and expertise in the dangerous and demanding field of the Hollywood stunt man. During the years I have known him I have always enjoyed the opportunities I have had to listen to him recount many of his experiences, and reading his very entertaining book has given depth and breadth to so many of the stories I have enjoyed so much. Thank you, Jesse, for sharing your adventures with those of us who have boring "normal" jobs and will never know the thrills you experienced on a daily basis.

Stories from a Stunt Man
By MovieGuy
What it Takes To Be A Stuntman in Movies and TV. Good look at a Mickey Rooney lookalike who has made his living in the stunt business. The book opens with a telling of how the fire escape stunts were done in Stanley Kramer's It's a Mad, Mad Mad Mad World. Jesse Wayne relates how and why he got into the stunt trade.
I had read Yakima Canutt's biography years ago so I am familiar with other biographies of stunt men. Note: Since Jesse Wayne was short in stature, he doubled Mickey Rooney, children and women.
Highly recommended.

Informative and Readable
By Marie
The text is essential for any ESL or ELL instructor. The concepts detailed within are foundational to any consideration of assessment and the examples provided enable the reader to better envision the practical application of assessment methods in the classroom. Although assessment is perhaps not the most exciting topic, it is the basis of responsive and effective language instruction. The text is surprisingly readable and accessible as compared to other texts on this topic which I have read. It's really written for the instructor or lay person whereas other texts I've encountered seem geared toward researchers or doctoral students.

Basic textbook
By Ricardo De La Torre
Not much to say about it. it provides a basic overview to language assessment. Basic tools, methods, term definitions. A great starting point for anyone new to language assessment or to test writing in general. I feel that a lot of what is in this book can be applied to other subjects as well.

At times the book seemed to repeat itself. However, it provided some useful materials to use in the classroom. And it was over priced!!

Review

From the reviews:

"The authors present mathematical models in bioinformatics and describe the biological problems that inspire the computer science tools used to handle the enormous data sets involved. … Who is it for? Graduates and researchers who want more than just another guide on how to use databases. Presentation Clear and logical. Would you recommend it? Yes, if you are interested in the statistical and mathematical underbelly of bioinformatics." (Times Higher Education, May, 2008)

"The strength of the book is its thorough survey of bioinformatics topics. … Its structure–two parts (foundations and applications), well-classified problem areas, and a gradual approach for problem framing and solving- make it invaluable for computer scientists learning bioinformatics, or biologists applying computational methods to their fields. The book is suitable for graduate students and professionals, and can serve as a reference for state-of-the-art issues and solutions." (Cherif Keramane, ACM Computing Reviews, September, 2008)

"In this comprehensive textbook, the authors present mathematical models in bioinformatics and describe the biological problems that inspire the computer science tools used to handle the enormous data sets involved. … the book closes with a thorough bibliography, reaching from classical research results to very recent findings, providing many pointers for future research. This volume is ideally suited for a senior undergraduate or graduate course on bioinformatics, with a strong focus on its mathematical and computer science background." (T. Postelnicu, Zentrablatt MATH, Vol. 1153, 2009)

From the Back Cover

Bioinformatics as a discipline arose out of the need to introduce order into the massive data sets produced by the new technologies of molecular biology: large-scale DNA sequencing, measurements of RNA concentrations in multiple gene expression arrays, and new profiling techniques in proteomics. As such, bioinformatics integrates a number of traditional quantitative sciences such as mathematics, statistics, computer science and cybernetics with biological sciences such as genetics, genomics, proteomics and molecular evolution.

In this comprehensive textbook, Polanski and Kimmel present mathematical models in bioinformatics and they describe the biological problems that inspire the computer science tools used to handle the enormous data sets involved. The first part of the book covers the mathematical and computational methods, while the practical applications are presented in the second part. The mathematical presentation is descriptive and avoids unnecessary formalism, and yet remains clear and precise. Emphasis is laid on motivation through biological problems and cross applications. Each of the four chapters in the first part is accompanied by exercises and problems to support an understanding of the techniques presented. Each of the six chapters of the second part is devoted to some specific application domain: sequence alignment, molecular phylogenetics and coalescence theory, genomics, proteomics, RNA, and DNA microarrays. Each chapter concludes with a problems and projects section, to deepen the reader's understanding and to allow for the design of derived methods. Many of the projects involve publicly available software and/or Web-based bioinformatics depositories. Finally, the book closes with a thorough bibliography, reaching from classic research results to very recent findings, providing many pointers for future research.Overall, this volume is ideally suited for a senior undergraduate or graduate course on bioinformatics, with a strong focus on its mathematical and computer science background.

I hate this one but it's personal opinion

I think it depends on where you are in the bioinformatics field. For me, I need something really practical of what need to be done and not to much of math and matrices and everything else. I figure it would not work for most of us who are not that good with math and computers.

THE BRIDE SAID, "I DID?"

Forget about her reputation. Kylie Chatterson is most definitely not that kind of girl. She's a conscientious CPA who has never even been with a man…that way. But when she wakes up in a Nevada hotel room after her friend's bachelorette party, the best man is in her bed…and he's wearing a wedding ring. And guess what: so is she!

For better or worse, Drew Gregson is now her husband. The hunky military psychologist doesn't remember the night any more than she does. Nevertheless, he seems in no hurry to end their impulsive betrothal. As she gets to know Drew and his adorable, squirmy nephews, Kylie has to remind herself this is all temporary—and pretend. Or could it be the best mistake she ever made?

From the Author
Dear Reader,

Writing Waking Up Wed was so much fun for me because I've always loved the idea of a sassy and wild heroine paired up with a conservative and uptight hero. It's even more fun to see those characters discover that they can't always judge a book by its cover.

Whether it's a friend, family member, co-worker or spouse, we all have that special person in our lives who balances us out. My grandparents were no exception. Momoo and Boboo were married for over sixty years and suited each other perfectly. Boboo was a fast-paced, fun-loving, life of the party kind of guy, whose enthusiasm and energetic ideas were hard to contain. Momoo was his quiet and patient rock, the woman who kept him grounded even while happily going along for the ride. It wasn't until I was older that I saw who truly held the reins in that marriage and realized that their success hinged upon the fact that they brought out the best in each other.

Like Kylie and Drew, my grandparents also ran off to get married--albeit they were sober (supposedly) and their wedding took place at a chapel in Yuma, Arizona, during a three-day Army leave. Sometimes, we do crazy impulsive things and we have to suffer the consequences for our actions. Now, I'm no relationship expert, but I know a happily-ever-after when I see one, and I would gladly suffer consequences like theirs any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Every morning for the first thirty years of her life, Kylie Chatterson had woken up alone. Until today.

She'd barely rolled over on the hotel's plush mattress when her sleepy eyes did a double take at the fair-haired, angelic-looking man snuggled up beside her.

Who in the world was he—and how in the world had he gotten here?

His muscular body was chiseled like the marble statue of a Greek god, but this work of art was warmer and much more real. The brutal morning sun intruded through the wide-open curtains she'd obviously neglected to close, shedding unnecessary light on her growing sense of shame.

Kylie held her breath, commanding her body to stay still so her spinning head could add up all the facts.

Fact one. She'd flown to Reno for her friend's coed bachelor/ette party yesterday. This was definitely the room she'd checked into because her fuchsia cheetah-print suitcase was haphazardly propped on the luggage rack at the foot of the bed. So at least she was where she was supposed to be. That was good.

Fact two. She remembered meeting up with some of the wedding party and having one or two cocktails in the casino bar. She normally didn't drink much, so it couldn't have been more than a couple. Could it? She spotted three plastic oversize souvenir cups by the TV stand. That wasn't so good, but it explained the throbbing at the base of her scalp, her queasy stomach and her lack of memory.

Don't feel, she commanded herself. Just think and solve the problem.

Fact three. There was a dyed-blue carnation bouquet next to an instant photo in a cheesy cardboard frame from the Silver Rush Wedding Chapel that read Hitched in Reno on the bedside table next to her. The image was too grainy—or maybe her eyes were too fuzzy to see—but she was definitely the one holding up the ugly flowers in the picture. She carefully stretched out her arm, trying to bring the photograph closer and into focus without waking the sleeping Adonis beside her. She squinted at the photo. Had they gone to some sort of Wild West-themed bar last night? Maybe that was where she'd met the guy next to her, because he was in the picture, too.

She let out a quiet breath while she carefully studied the shot for more clues. She and Mr. Adonis looked as if they were sitting in a covered pioneer wagon. Next to them sat two people wearing costumes reflecting Nevada's silver mining heritage. At least she hoped those were costumes. This was really weird, unless…

She glanced over her bare shoulder. The perfectly formed male snored softly away in her bed, and, as she let her gaze drift past the golden features of his face, she rethought her earlier angel appraisal. There was nothing cherubic about the man from the neck down. Had some of the bachelorettes ended up at an all-male revue show?

Oh, no. What if this guy next to her was a male stripper and she'd hooked up with him? Her parents would be mortified. They'd raised her to be a strong woman with an even stronger sense of self-worth—one who would never get taken advantage of by a man.

She dropped the photo and wiped her damp palm on the sheet. Kylie was a certified public accountant and she needed an explanation for this situation that would add up, one that would make sense. She had to stop jumping to conclusions and get back to her usual analytical approach to problem solving.

Besides, his body might look as though it could grace the cover of one of her historical romance novels, but his relaxed face looked too innocent to work for tips.

She rubbed her eyes before scrutinizing the picture again. Regardless of where they were or who else was in the photo with them, they'd both looked pretty darned pleased with themselves last night. Obviously, they'd had a fun time. She didn't know if that was good or not.

Fact four. She was still dressed in her matching blue lace panty and bra set—but nothing else. What did that mean? Had they or hadn't they.?

Again, she looked at her bedmate. She had no idea what he had on underneath the covers, but on top, he was wearing nothing but an impressive array of bronzed muscles and a smile. The heat of embarrassment shot up her cheeks.

Even though most people thought Kylie dressed too flashy and went out on more than her fair share of dates, the reality was that in all of her thirty years, she'd never let a man get past second base. And now she couldn't remember who the batter was or whether he'd hit a home run last night! She didn't need to be sober to come to the conclusion that winding up half naked and in bed with a stranger couldn't be good at all.

Before she could move on to fact five, the blond Adonis snuggled closer and wrapped his overdeveloped biceps around her waist. His warm strength sizzled against her taut skin, and it took every fiber of her normally calm demeanor to not leap off the bed and run away from him. She no longer had time to be analytical. If she tried to appraise the situation any more, she'd end up waking him. Maybe she could just sneak out quietly.

Wait. This was her room.

She might bite her tongue when some of the more gossipy women in town mocked her, but having grown up the only girl with four older brothers and an opinionated father, she was used to establishing her independence and her individuality. She was no wallflower. Kylie had learned early on that in life she needed to stand up for herself in order to stand out. She'd also learned how hold her own with men. Even gorgeous, naked ones.

She shoved at his shoulder. "Pssst."

His only response was to grip her tighter.

"Hey," she said louder as she tried gracefully to extricate herself from his embrace.

His full pink lips nuzzled against her neck, and a shocking tingle raced down her spine.

The intimate contact both aroused and startled her. She used her bare leg to shove herself away from him. Unfortunately, her heel nailed him in the shin and, just as she was pushing away, he yelped and scrambled backward. The force of his retreat timed perfectly with her launch, and she lost her momentum, collapsing to the patterned carpeted floor in a pile of long limbs and blue lace.

"What in the hell?" she cried out, trying to pull the sheet down to cover herself. "Where am I?" he asked.

With the sheet finally wrapped around her, Kylie got to her feet so she could confront the equally confused stranger sitting up in her bed. She caught sight of her makeshift toga in the dresser mirror and lifted her chin higher. Her friends always told her that with her tall, curvaceous body, she looked just like an auburn version of Wonder Woman. Yet right now the resemblance was more similar to the superhero's secret identity, Princess Diana, who needed to defend her Amazon kingdom from unwanted males. "I'll tell you where you are if you tell me who you are."

"I'm Andrew." He rubbed at his close-cropped haircut, and she took comfort in the fact that his head must be pounding just as badly as her own.

Andrew didn't sound like a stripper name—not that she had any point of reference when it came to exotic male dancers.

"Well, Andrew, you're in my room at the Legacy Casino in Reno. Don't ask me how you got here, because I'm still pretty fuzzy on the details."

The man looked at the disheveled bedding, then back at her, his eyes traveling the length of her body before settling on her heated face. He blinked a couple of times before his hand fumbled on the nightstand and lifted a pair of wire-framed lenses to his eyes.

"You're Kylie," he said, recognition apparently dawning on him.

"Well, at least one of us knows…" She faltered as a flashback from last night triggered her own memory bank. "You know, with those glasses on, you kind of look like that military friend of Cooper's."

His nod confirmed the sudden fear she couldn't even bear to say aloud. Oh, no. This was bad. This was very, very bad.

"Oh, my gosh." She pointed an accusatory finger at him while he looked around the room sheepishly, probably in search of his holy vestments. Or at least his pants. "You're the minister who's performing the wedding. You're Drew Gregson!"

Snippets of yesterday afternoon clicked into place, and she remembered arriving at the cocktail lounge early so she could welcome the rest of the wedding party. Drew, the groom's best friend, was already there and looking as lost and as confused as a lamb. And she'd apparently led him straight to slaughter. She sank down into the nearest chair. He hadn't stood up yet, and she wasn't about to get in bed again with a man of the cloth. "We are so going to hell."

Yesterday she'd ordered him a drink, telling him it would help him relax. Then she'd cracked a ribald joke to loosen the tension. He'd made a scandalized face before laughing, and they'd toasted the newlyweds. Everything after that was a blur. A horrible, sinful blur.

"Yes, that's me. But I'm not a minister."

She studied his face, trying to decide if he was telling the truth or just doing damage control. Maybe he was used to waking up in strange hotel rooms with women he didn't know, but he didn't seem too concerned about the fate of their eternal souls. So if he wasn't a pastor, then what was he? And why was he so unbelievably calm—and not the least bit modest?

She averted her eyes because if she had to look at his rock-hard abs any longer, she would have no hope of keeping her mind focused and figuring out how everything had gone so completely wrong last night. "Can you please put a shirt on or something?"

He pulled the comforter off the floor and dragged it around his body as he scanned the room. Any article of male clothing would do at this point, but Kylie had no idea where he'd left his. From her vantage point, she tried to look around the room, too, but her search kept returning to his bare torso and the fabric secured around his waist with his left hand. After years of being single, she resorted to her default training and zoned in on the shiny gold ring.

"What the hell is that?" She pointed to the offending object. "You're married! I just spent the night with a drunk, married man."

She pulled her white four-hundred-thread-count shroud tighter around her body, as if she could make herself vanish from the shame and his anonymous wife's impending wrath.

"What are you talking about?" Drew asked as he picked up a plain white undershirt and pulled it on over his head. "I'm not married."

"You're wearing a wedding ring."

He squinted his baby-blue eyes at his finger, looking truly puzzled by the gleaming jewelry. Then he turned his bespectacled gaze to her as if waiting for her to explain the whole situation to him.

Well, she certainly had no idea what was going on. Still, his appraising look was patient and intense, and Kylie had the feeling that Drew had probably won his fair share of staring contests. His continuing focus unnerved her, and her trembling fingers slipped on the sheet. She struggled to get her improvised garment back into position, and her breath hitched when she saw what had caught his attention.

"You have one, too." His tone was casual, lacking any judgment or accusation.

She stared at the matching band on her own ring finger.

For the first time in history, Kylie Chatterson, former pep leader of the Boise State Cheer Team, second runner-up for Miss Idaho USA and current CPA whiz, was at a loss for words.

Her sheet slipped to the floor unnoticed as she ran into the bathroom and slammed the door.

Maybe she wasn't being very mature and rational about this situation—whatever this situation was—but she felt as though she couldn't breathe, and her palms were sticky with sweat.

This must be what a panic attack felt like. Or a hangover. Ugh, how much had she had to drink last night?

Don't freak out. Where was her inner voice of reason when she needed it most? Probably back in the hotel lounge where she must've accidentally dumped it out of her designer gold clutch, along with the rest of her morals, when she'd pulled out her credit card to pay for that first round.

She took a sip of water from the sink, then held one hand under the cool flow while she forced herself to inhale and exhale through her nose and slow her breathing. When it finally felt as if her lungs weren't going to explode, she shut off the faucet and dried her hands.

She needed to think. Why was she wearing this stupid wedding ring, and why had Drew Gregson spent the night in her room? The answer was obvious to her methodical and organized brain, even if she was completely unclear on how they'd gotten to this point.

She stared at her sloppy reflection in the mirror, as if the hot mess looking back at her could provide any explanation. Her long auburn curls were a tangled disaster and her once carefully applied makeup had probably been left behind on one of the ten pillows out there with the Angel of Lust.

Thankfully, she'd unpacked yesterday afternoon and had left her toiletry kit on the bathroom counter. She pulled the fluffy white hotel robe off the hook and doubleknotted it around her waist. After running a brush through her hair and securing it into a tight ponytail, she scrubbed her face clean. She brushed her teeth much longer than the American Dental Association recommended, knowing she was stalling for time.

Just as she rinsed out the last of the toothpaste, a knock sounded at the bathroom door. "Uh, Kylie?"

Great. He was still out there. She needed to get rid of him ASAP so she could get down to the business of figuring out just what in the world was going on around here.

"I just found some papers on the dresser," he said through the locked barrier between them. "I think we may have a little situation."

Drew's head felt as if mortar rounds were ricocheting inside his skull. The marriage license trembling in his normally steady hands looked real enough, but his hazy eyes could barely make out the words. He looked at his watch. Oh nine hundred. He needed to pick up his nephews in less than twenty-four hours. His twin brother's eight-year-olds were waiting for him at his parents' house in Boise.

At least he was now dressed and could face the unexpected crisis that had barricaded herself in the bathroom with a little decorum—unlike the behavior he must've exhibited last night. He'd found the last of his clothes strewn about as if a bomb had detonated in the hotel room. He was usually so neat and took care with his clothing. Of course, he also took care not to overindulge in alcohol or marry women after knowing them for all of five hours.

Clearly, he wasn't himself.

Fun book
By S. Frank
Good book with a really fun beginning. Kylie is the maid of honor for her best friend Maxine's wedding (A Marine for His Mom). When the groom's somewhat uptight best friend arrives for the bachelor/bachelorette party, Kylie offers him a drink to get him to relax a little. The next thing she knows she wakes up in bed with him and both of them are wearing wedding rings. Neither of them remember anything about how they got there.

Kylie has a reputation for being quite a flirt, dresses flamboyantly, and says what she thinks. But that is pretty much a front for a woman who really wants to find Mr. Right and have a family of her own. She still hasn't found the one she's ready to give herself to, and now she's married to a virtual stranger. She's determined to keep it quiet until they can figure a way out of it.

Drew is freshly arrived from overseas, ready to take up his job at the military hospital and his turn as guardian to his twin nephews while his brother is deployed. He's always kept his emotions under control and determined to be sure that a woman is right for him before making a commitment, and that the commitment will be for life. Finding himself married to a stranger who seems to be the exact opposite of everything he wants is disturbing to say the least. He'll go along with her desire to keep it quiet for now, but something in him says not to give up.

Their next encounter is the night of the rehearsal dinner, when he has his two rambunctious nephews with him. He's at his wit's end, but Kylie takes them in hand. Suddenly Drew is thinking that maybe fate hasn't played him so false after all, though Kylie is still keeping distance between them. Things get really interesting at the wedding reception the next day, when one too many snide comments from the town gossip has Kylie blurting out the news of their marriage. Now they have to follow through and play the part.

What follows is sheer fun, as both Kylie and Drew cope with the chaos that living with the twins brings to them. There is also the burning attraction between them that each tries to resist but end up giving in to. I loved seeing them get to know each other and discover that deep down, they weren't so different after all. I really liked the way that Drew soon understood Kylie and the way she reacts to things, and was sensitive enough not to push her where she didn't want to go. It was also fun to see the way that she was able to chip away at his control, making him a bit more relaxed. But they do have a bit of a communication issue, as neither will take the first step in saying that they want the marriage to become a real one, fearing the rejection that they are sure would be the result. Their own insecurities rear up when Drew's brother returns unexpectedly. The ending was really sweet as multiple people make Drew and Kylie realize they have to fight for what they want.

The secondary characters were terrific. The twins were adorable and perfectly portrayed. I ached for them and their fears when the reasons for their actions came out. I loved Kylie's dad, especially when the truth of his treatment of her came out. It was hysterical that everyone saw it except for her. I also really like Drew's brother Luke. Being Drew's twin gave him some extra insight into his behavior, and I loved the way he helped Drew through his crisis with Kylie. I'm really looking forward to his story.

My only complaint is the cover of the book. Kylie is a redhead, not a blond, and Drew wears glasses. I would really have liked to see those glasses on the cover model, as that is so unusual in a hero.

Harlequin at its best
By StaceyK
Waking Up Wed writer Christy Jeffries has put a new twist on the classic Harlequin Romance. It starts off with a new twist as the two main characters are already together at the beginning of the book. It takes place in modern times and the characters are likeable and believable. The sex scenes are very mild but work well with the story. There is humor, drama, and excellent dialogue. This is the first in a miniseries, set in the town of Sugar Falls, by Ms. Jeffries. At the end of the story, you definitely want to continue reading the series to find out where she takes Kylie and Drew.
