Murder for hire. Drug trafficking. Embezzlement. Money laundering. Market manipulation. Governments overthrown. These might sound like plot lines of a conspiracy thriller, but they are true stories from the short history of "cryptocurrencies". Originally conceived by computer hackers and cryptographers, these digital currencies, represent a completely new sort of financial transaction - one that doesn't need banks. Yet it's the technology that underpins these cryptocurrencies that has financiers, lawmakers and governments sitting up and taking notice. Hailed as the greatest advancement since the invention of the internet, the blockchain is moving away from being the backbone for a digital currency and making inroads into other core concepts of society: identity, ownership and even the rule of law. The End of Money is an essential introduction to cryptocurrencies and the blockchain revolution. On this journey you'll discover how this staggering new technology has the potential to enable an ultra-libertarian society beyond government control.

Buy the book and get a FREE YouTube video course!
By Herbert T. Case
How many authors take the time to make a comprehensive video series that presents and supports their entire book? Stan Gibilisco does just that with the third edition of Beginning Guide to Reading Schematics. Both the book and video series start with an explanation of what is involved in understanding electronic schematics. Block diagrams, component symbols, simple circuits, and complex circuits are all chapter titles. Each of these subjects is dealt with in an easy to read (and view) format. I have read the previous versions of this book and Stan has rewritten many sections, redrawn all the schematics, and included a new section that explains how each circuit works. Combining reading with viewing the YouTube videos will give a beginner as well as an "old hand" a new understanding and appreciation for electronics! I built the test board in the "Let's learn by doing" chapter and completed all the experiments. I found this great fun and recommend that all readers try them. Yes, there are nice videos supporting this section of the book too! All in all a great book and video series that I give five stars! Well done Stan!!
(Stan also has videos supporting his other books at sciencewriter.net. Check them out!!!)

Stan Gibilisco's Beginner's Guide to Reading Schematics, Third Edition
By David
Stan Gibilisco's Beginner's Guide to Reading Schematics, Third Edition, goes way beyond what one would expect in a book of this title. The spring binding makes it easy to use on your work bench just as Stan's lucid writing and clear graphics make it incredibly useful for the serious student or experimenter on any level. The book starts out by defining what is meant by schematic representation and then goes on to present and discuss increasingly complex electronic circuitry, always explaining it in simple terms that the novice can easily understand yet are useful to the more advanced technician as well. I highly recommend this book for all electronics students who want to broaden their perspective without getting lost in the details. Stan has written many books on the subjects of electronics and mathematics (most published by McGraw-Hill) and the ones I have read have been immensely helpful.

Very clear and well written, but lacks the content I would expect from an $18 book.
By Joe
I read the whole book and it's great! I mean, I've read mostly Navy Avionics schematics and a few schematics for components I've dealt with in flight simulation. So, my reading level is kind of limited. That's why I bought this book.

The reviews of the previous Beginner's Guide to Reading Schematics were great. So, I was expecting big things. What I found was that the 3rd edition does a phenomenal job of explaining how to look at schematics. Gibilisco compares a schematic to a map and by using that analogy he really pulls together an understanding of how to generally follow a schematic. That's my favorite part of this book. It's also a great reference for illustrated components you might find common to most schematics. But the book doesn't go into detail of how to understand the functionality of components through reading a schematic. Toward the end of the book you are given an opportunity for hands on applications that I'm sure help better understand schematics. I didn't do these but I could tell by looking at the exercises and the required hardware that they were limited in scope. One day I will spend the money and do the exercises but no matter, I will still be missing a large portion of understanding that was hoping to get from this book.

Great read
By ChristianDroid
One of the things that intrigues me about the characters in the Bible is the way that God takes ordinary people, just like you and me, and through them accomplish extraordinary things. Since I am a big fan of John MacArthur's "Twelve Ordinary Men" and "Twelve Extraordinary Women", I was excited when the opportunity presented itself to read and review his newest newest book "Twelve Unlikely Heroes, How God Commissioned Unexpected People in the Bible and What He Wants to Do with You."

In this latest book, MacArthur does not disappoint. By examining the lives of these unlikely heroes the author shows how God is in control and that with Him anything is possible. God does not always choose the most likely candidate in order to accomplish His work. In fact, most of the time He chooses the most unlikely candidates. These 12 heroes show how God can change the world through the lives of the unlikely, just as He can change the world through our lives.

John MacArthur starts out by stating that our world today has a twisted sense of what it means to be a hero.

"The word Hero is slowly losing its significance because it has been so broadly redefined in popular culture. ... Nowadays, celebrity status alone is enough to get a person deemed heroic. You'll often hear people refer to their favorite person as "my hero," indicating that all that may be necessary to be a hero is to have one person who thinks you are."

But these are not the heroes of this book. If you are looking for celebrities or pop icons then you should go pick up a copy of People Magazine. MacArthur describes the Biblical heroes in his book.

"The pages of Scripture are filled with stories of great heroes - men and women whom God used in unique and powerful ways to accomplish His purposes. Their exploits vary greatly, yet the common thread that runs through all of their testimonies is faith."

In his book, you will learn about the unlikely heroes of Enoch, Joseph, Miriam, Gideon, Samson, Jonathan, Jonah, Esther, John the Baptist, James, Mark, and Onesimus. If you have read any of the other "twelve" books by the Mr MacArthur then you will not be disappointed with these newest unlikely characters and their stories.

One of the things that I really appreciate about this, and the other MacArthur books, is that the author does not glorify those that he is writing about. He does not ever forget that the real hero in our lives is God. Without Him none of these characters would have made a lasting impact, nor would we be reading about them today.

By understanding that He is always in control and that with His help anything is possible, then we start to realize that we can have an unlikely impact on the lives of others. However, no matter what we are able to accomplish with His help, He will always be The Hero.

I also really like MacArthur's writing style. He writes this book in a manner that is enjoyable for everyone to read. The material is deep enough for one to learn from but it is not written in a manner that requires a doctorate in theology to understand.

I have used both of the other books (12 Ordinary Men and 12 Extraordinary Women) as a guide for teaching my adult class in church. The manner in which the book is organized with a chapter for each character makes it a great guide for teaching. I am already planning the next series based on this newest group of Unlikely Heroes. (There is also a companion learning guide available for this book as well.)

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in reading about how God uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary goals. The book is informative and inspirational, giving the reader an insight into these twelve lives and allowing the reader to see how his or her own life can be impacted by God. I give this book 5 of 5 stars.

Twelve Unlikely Heroes, by John MacArthur and published by Thomas Nelson publishers can be found at Amazon and other Christian booksellers online and in stores now.

"Sanctified and Useful For the Master, Prepared For Every Good Work." (2 Timothy 2:21)
By Keith Heapes
It doesn't take the reader long before they realize that Pastor John MacArthur's latest book, "Twelve Unlikely Heroes," was written for a very broad audience and is not one of his oft controversial theological treatises. He is not battling a doctrinal fallacy or a major assault on the church or the Bible in this book. MacArthur made this clear when he describes this book as a survey, "a journey through the chronology of biblical history."

SPOILER ALERT: There may be plot information beyond this point that some readers may not want to know. If so, stop now or continue reading at your own risk.

Some readers may not be aware that this book is the third in a set of similar books. The first and second books in this set are titled "Twelve Ordinary Men" and "Twelve Extraordinary Women", respectively. As the book title implies, MacArthur has chosen twelve characters, eight from the Old Testament and four from the New Testaments, men and women, all from different walks of life, each in a different set of circumstances, and all with a story to tell. He draws his information from Scripture and some extra-biblical sources, like the Jewish historian Josephus, to write about twelve unlikely characters who, according to MacArthur, displayed the marks of a true hero. Many of the characters selected are listed in what Christians call the "Hall of Faith" in Hebrews, chapter 11. MacArthur writes:

"The pages of Scripture are filled with stories of great heroes--men and women whom God used in unique and powerful ways to accomplish His purposes. Their exploits vary greatly, yet the common thread that runs through all of their testimonies is faith."

Before introducing the first of the twelve unlikely heroes, MacArthur made sure his audience understands who the real HERO is behind these twelve heroes. He wrote that, "...[I]t is imperative to emphasize one critical point: the true hero of Scripture, in every Bible story, is God Himself." MacArthur also pointed out:

"In literature, the hero is the main protagonist, the principal character, and the central figure of the narrative. That is certainly true of God throughout the pages of Scripture. He is the One who always provides the victory. It is His power, His wisdom, and His goodness that are continually put on display--even when He utilizes human instruments to accomplish His purposes. Consequently, all the glory belongs to Him."

MacArthur's book is a relatively low-keyed and easy to read collection of stories with a definite theme running through the entire volume. Each chapter is not just a retelling of the Bible story. As expected, MacArthur embeds practical challenges and application in each story as well as a short review at the end. One section in particular that I thought was particularly valuable was included in the story about Joseph. MacArthur's emphasis in this story was God's sovereignty (as with the other stories as well). Just before his summary, he challenges the reader to "Consider some of the many ways in which God exercises His sovereign control." A list of sixteen ways followed, complete with Scripture references to read. This part of the book is where MacArthur shows his pastoral side. If the reader only reads the stories, I believe they have missed the heart of this book. MacArthur's embedded comments are the book; the stories make up the framework that draws the readers' attention to the bedrock, the divine message.

With this being said, I would think "Twelve Unlikely Heroes" would be a useful book for small group discussions as well as stories to read to school-age children. I enjoyed the book myself and would recommend it be read one chapter, one character at a time, with subsequent time set aside for consideration and introspection. Unfortunately, it was MacArthur's somewhat devotional style in this book that has drawn some criticism. In my opinion, the criticism is unnecessary and unwarranted. I think the book is better than that and, as I mentioned earlier, was written to appeal to a wider audience than many of his earlier books.

MacArthur's book is not without a few flaws, too. I noted two factual inaccuracies, one in the story about Miriam and another one in the story about John the Baptist. In the story about Miriam, MacArthur writes that after his [Moses] birth his parents gave Miriam's younger brother his name--Moses. Yet Scripture clearly indicates Moses was named by Pharaoh's daughter (Exodus 3:10). Between Exodus 3, verses 9 and 10, there is a period of a few years while Moses was cared for and grew into a young boy. Common sense tells us that his parents must have given him some name during those early formative years, though the Scriptures are silent about this. I would think it would be safe to say that whatever his parents called him, it wasn't Moses. Hence, Exodus 3:10 states that it wasn't until after those early years that the child was returned to Pharaoh's daughter, was raised as her son and at that point she names him Moses, meaning: "Because I drew him out of the water."

Regarding John the Baptist, MacArthur writes concerning John's father Zacharias, who for his unbelief concerning the announcement from the angel Gabriel had been unable to speak since being told his wife Elizabeth would bear a unique son in her old age. MacArthur writes: "When he (Zacharias) saw his newborn son for the first time, his tongue was instantly loosed." However, Scripture records in Luke 1 the following concerning what happened during the eighth day after John's birth: "And they made signs to his father [Zacharias], as to what he wanted him [John] called. And he asked for a tablet and wrote as follows, 'His name is John.' And they were all astonished. And at once his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he began to speak in praise of God". Certainly the eighth day after his miraculous birth wasn't the first time Zacharias had seen his son, John?

There was also a grammatical error in sentence structure on page 156 that should have been caught before printing by the proofreaders and especially the publisher.

Early in the book, an unusual translation issue also caught my eye. Again, in the story of Joseph, the following sentence appears: "When Jacob heard the news that his son Joseph was still alive, he was so stunned that his heart momentarily stopped (Genesis 45:26)." After reading this translation I was also stunned myself. So after doing some word research I concluded the New King James Bible translation that MacArthur used in this book seems to have taken a few liberties and expanded the meaning of the word "stunned," probably for dramatic affect. That was unnecessary.

There is little cited material and few footnotes in this book. Mostly I suspect because it's not the kind of book that would need a lot of footnoting. MacArthur does add an Epilogue that should not be overlooked. Also, in his Acknowledgements, MacArthur thanks Nathan Busenitz "...who compiled and edited the contents of the first draft from my sermons, commentaries, and study notes--supplementing the material with additional research and writing where necessary, then presenting it to me for further work to reach a final product." This information should have been sufficient for the critical reviewers to explain exactly how and from what material this book was produced. Yet MacArthur continues to be pelted with criticism over this process of book writing. Some have even accused him of being in cahoots with publishing companies to increase book sales. Amazing!

In closing, I recommend readers also listen to the messages that spawned this book. They can be heard without charge on-line. I think I have already said that I liked this book, though I usually read books with a more challenging theological content. I read "Twelve Unlikely Heroes" one chapter, one character at a time, one evening at a time before retiring at night; primarily for the enjoyment and encouragement. In my opinion, that's the kind of book it was intended to be.

Good Read
By Mikeylynn
Twelve Unlikely Heroes by John MacArthur is about twelve people in the Bible and why God chose them to do His will. The twelve people are:

Enoch
Joseph
Miriam
Gideon and Samson
Jonathan
Jonah
Esther
John the Baptist
James
Mark and Onesimus

I liked the history behind Enoch because I really haven't read much about him before. I also started to think about how old people got back then and how this was even possible.
I loved the chapter about Esther, it brought a different side to the story I hadn't thought about before.
James, the brother of Jesus, was a chapter I enjoyed a lot as well, thinking back to when Jesus was a little boy and what that must have been like.

The other chapters in the book are good but are a brief overview of those people and their lives. I would have liked to read more about the history behind the times and the people than was written. Granted the author is fitting twelve people's lives into one book. It makes me want to read a book about just one of the people for a more in depth understanding.

Overall this is a great read and I enjoyed reading it!

"I received this book for free from Thomas Nelson Publishing through their Booksneeze program. This is my honest opinion of the book."

Kieran stood on the front porch of the small, daffodil-yellow house and fisted his hands at his hips. In the distance, the sounds of a lawn mower mingled with childish shouts and laughter. The Santa Monica neighborhood where he had finally tracked down Olivia's address was firmly, pleasantly middle class.

He told himself not to jump to conclusions.

The article he'd clipped from one of his father's newspapers crackled in his pocket like the warning rattle of a venomous snake. He didn't need to take it out for a second read. The words were emblazoned in his brain.

Oscar winners Javier and Lolita Delgado threw a lavish party for their only grandchild's fifth birthday. The power couple, two of the few remaining MGM "Hollywood royals," commanded an A-list crowd that included a who's who of movie magic. Little "Cammie," the star of the show, enjoyed pony rides, inflatables and a lavish afternoon buffet that stopped just short of caviar. The child's mother, Olivia Delgado, stayed out of the limelight as is her custom, but was seen occasionally in the company of rising film star Jeremy Vargas.

Like a dog worrying a bone, his brain circled back to the stunning possibility. The timing was right. But that didn't mean he and Olivia had produced a child.

Anger, searing and unexpected, filled his chest, choking him with confusion and inexplicable remorse. He'd done his best to eradicate memories of Olivia. Their time together had been brief but spectacular. He'd loved her with a young man's reckless passion.

It couldn't be true, could it?

Though it wasn't his style to postpone confrontation, he extracted the damning blurb one more time and studied the grainy black-and-white photo. The child's face was in shadow, but he knew her family all too well.

Did Kieran have a daughter?

His hands trembled. He'd been home from the Far East less than seventy-two hours. Jet lag threatened to drag him under. Things hadn't ended well with Olivia, but surely she wouldn't have kept such a thing from him.

The shocking discovery in his father's office set all of Kieran's plans awry. Instead of enjoying a long overdue reunion with his extended family on their remote mountaintop in the Virginia Blue Ridge, he had said hello and goodbye with dizzying speed and hopped on another plane, this time to California.

Though he'd be loath to admit it, he was jittery and panicked. With a muttered curse, he reached out and jabbed the bell.

When the door swung open, he squared his shoulders and smiled grimly. "Hello, Olivia."

The woman facing him could have been a movie star herself. She was quietly beautiful; a sweeter, gentler version of her mother's exotic, Latin looks. Warm, sun-kissed skin. A fall of mahogany hair. And huge brown eyes that at the moment were staring at him aghast.

He probably should be ashamed that he felt a jolt of satisfaction when she went white. The urge to hurt her was unsettling. "May I come in?"

She wet her lips with her tongue, a pulse throbbing visibly at the side of her neck. "Why are you here?" Her voice cracked, though she was clearly trying hard to appear unconcerned.

"I thought we could catch up…for old times' sake. Six years is a long span."

She didn't give an inch. Her hand clenched the edge of the door, and her body language shouted a resounding no. "I'm working," she said stiffly. "Now's not a good time."

He might have been amused by her futile attempt at resistance if he hadn't been so tightly wound. Her generous breasts filled out the front of a white scooped-neck top. It was almost impossible not to stare. Any healthy man between the ages of sixteen and seventy would be drawn to the lush sexuality of a body that, if anything, was more pulse-stopping than ever.

He pushed his way in, inexorably but gently. "Perhaps not for you. I happen to think it's a damn good time."

She stepped back instinctively as he moved past her into a neat, pleasantly furnished living room. Though it was warm and charming, not an item was out of place. No toys, no puzzles, no evidence of a child.

On the far wall, built-in bookcases housed a plethora of volumes ranging from popular fiction to history and art appreciation. Olivia had been a phenomenally intelligent student, an overachiever who possessed the unusual combination of creativity and solid business sense.

A single framed picture caught his eye. As he crossed the room for a closer look, he recognized the background. Olivia had written her graduate thesis about the life and work of famed children's author and illustrator Beatrix Potter. On one memorable weekend, Olivia had dragged Kieran with her to England's Lake District. After touring the house and grounds where the beloved character Peter Rabbit was born, Kieran had booked a room at a charming, romantic B and B.

Remembering the incredible, erotic days and nights he and Olivia had shared on a fluffy, down-filled mattress tightened his gut and made his sex stir. Had he ever felt that way since?

He'd tried so damned hard to forget her, to fulfill his duty as a Wolff son. A million times he had questioned the decisions he made back then. Leaving her without a word. Ending an affair that was too new…too fragile.

But he had ached for her. God, he had ached. For Olivia…elegant, funny, beautiful Olivia…with a body that could make a man weep for joy or pray that time stood still.

He shoved aside the arousing memory. There was a strong chance that this woman had perpetrated an unforgivable deception. He refused to let his good sense be impaired by nostalgia. And let's face it…this meeting should be taking place on neutral ground. Because without witnesses, there was a good chance he was going to wring Olivia's neck.

Again, he studied the photo. Olivia stood, smiling for the camera, holding the hand of a young child. Kieran's world shifted on its axis. He lost the ability to breathe. My God. The kid was a Wolff. No one could doubt it. The wide-spaced eyes, the wary expression, the uptilted chin.

He whirled to face his betrayer. "Where is she?" he asked hoarsely. "Where's my daughter?"

An emotional story
By Judy
A Touch of Persuasion by Janice Maynard continues the emotional and passionate stories of the Men Of Wolff Mountain.

Kieran Wolff could not believe his eyes when he saw a picture of his former lover with a five year old child. Kiernan didn't know Olivia Delgado was pregnant when he had to leave suddenly for a family emergency. He decides to confront Olivia to find out the truth, does he have a daughter?

Olivia Delgado fell in love with fellow student Kevin Wade six years ago. She was devastated when he left her with no word of why he disappeared. Come to find out Kevin was really Billionaire Kieran Wolff. Seeing the man she used to love on her doorstep sends Olivia into a panic.

Kieran wants to get to know his daughter Cammie and invites both mother and child to stay with his family for a few weeks. He is hoping that the time together will rekindle a passion that neither has forgotten.

Familiar storyline, hero's a rich bully, shallow lust-fest with no plot
By Hope This Helps
Rating: 1.5 stars. _Contains explicit graphic sexual content.
Note: Stand alone read. 2nd in The Men of Wolff Mountain series of seven books.

DISAPPOINTING. Nicely written, good vocabulary, standard hidden-child storyline, engaging secondary cast, strong family theme, and a hot, lust-a-thon. HOWEVER, more sex than storyline, the hero is a deceitful tyrant, the heroine is wishy-washy and it isn't believable that she jumps into bed the first night, with the hero who is threatening her. The story has potential to be a sweet journey of discovery between a father and his newly discovered daughter and a second chance at love, but instead there is little story. These issues detract badly from the storyline.

THE STORY revolves around millionaire gypsy, Kevin Wade (aka. Kieran Wolff), children's illustrator, Olivia Delgado, and her five-year-old daughter, Cammie. Years earlier, Olivia met Kevin as graduate students and they embarked on a hot heavy love affair. Just before graduation, he writes her an eight word note saying "sorry" and leaves. When she discovers she is pregnant, "Kevin Wade" is nowhere to be found.

As the story unfolds six years later, Kieran discovers the existence of Cammie, is angry. and demands access to his daughter, threatening to use his millions to take Cammie away from Olivia. Olivia agrees to come to Wolff Mountain for a weekend while Kieran try to turn the visit into a prison sentence for the summer. That's the plot. The rest is sex, sex, and more sex.

OVERALL, mostly a lust-a-thon with a few plot points thrown in. The MEN OF WOLFF MOUNTAIN starts with Into His Private Domain and ends with A Wolff at Heart.

Try the complex characters and storytelling of N. Bruhns, A. Stuart, and E. Palfrey. For sweet, funny, heart touching romances with great descriptive imagery, try Susan Fox or Cara Colter.

The Modern Neighbors of Tutankhamun: History, Life, and Work in the Villages of the Theban West Bank, by Kees van der Spek

Until their recent demolition, the colorful mud-brick hamlets of al-Qurna village, situated among the Noble Tombs of the Theban Necropolis on the Luxor West Bank, were home to a vibrant community.
Inhabiting a place of intensive Egyptological research for over two centuries, it was inevitable that Qurnawis should become part of the history of Egyptology and the development of archaeological practice in the Theban Necropolis. But they have mostly been regarded as laborers for the excavation teams or dealers in the illicit antiquities trade. The modern people inhabiting the ancient burial grounds have themselves rarely been considered.
By demonstrating the multiplicity of economic activities that are carried out in al-Qurna, this study counters the villagers' stereotypical representation as tomb robbers, and restores an understanding of who they are as people living their lives in the shadow of valued cultural heritage.

Historical-anthropological study of an Egyptian relocation
By Kristie Foell, Ph.D.
Probably not for the general reader, this impressive, substantive, academic study is based on the author's dissertation research. It focuses on the government-imposed relocation of the residents of el-Qurna, on the west bank of the Nile across from Luxor, a move ostensibly motivated by concerns about potential damage to archaeological treasures in the area (which lies among the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, and the Colossi of Memnon, to name just a few of the West Bank's Egyptological sights). The author presents a convincing and informed argument, however, that the relocation was part of a national-level plan to turn large parts of Luxor and its environs into an open-air museum, without all the bother of "natives" running around accosting tourists.

But although this is the rhetorical thrust of the work, its main achievement is a deep understanding of these very "natives" and their culture from a variety of angles: economic, religious, social, artistic, and above all, this population's historical interaction with ancient Egyptian artifacts, Egyptology, and, more recently, mass tourism. Based on fieldwork conducted between 1997-99, plus subsequent visits, van der Spek's study sets out to contradict, or at least contextualize and relativize, the popular view of Qurnawi as "tomb robbers." The market demand for antiquities, beginning with "mumiya" or mummy extract, was created by Europeans seeking first for cures, and later for collections; without this economic incentive, it would never have occurred to local residents to plunder the tombs they had adapted as contemporary dwelling places. And yet this only partially-earned reputation played a role in the rhetoric that allowed their forcible relocation after generations of ongoing occupancy.

Van der Spek details the multiple economic survival strategies of West Bank residents, who often combine government work (with its stability and promise of a pension) with small-scale farming and a variety of interactions with archaeologists and tourists in order to make a living. This "three-legged stool" is precarious for most, but better than relying on one source of income only. Although some of the information presented is now dated--for example, an antiquities guard listed as earning 150 EGP (about $25/month) in 1999 may now (2013) be expected to earn around 3000 EGP (just under $500) per month--the general point that this population continues to live an economically marginal life with little opportunity for wealth creation still holds.

Of most interest to me, and perhaps of greatest value to future generations, were the detailed accounts of daily life in a constellation of "vernacular architecture" that no longer exists. From the historical development of kinship relations between "Hurubati" and "Qsasiya" to the role of the Sufi-influenced Shaykh al-Tayyeb in conflict resolution, and from the employment practices of foreign archaeological missions to the creative output and sales strategies of local artisans, the book gave me a much better understanding of the conventions and motivations of the people with whom this foreigner is sharing the West Bank for a short while. I give a more detailed account of what I personally learned at wordpress, where my writing appears under americaninluxor, but I hope my review here is helpful to potential readers not necessarily living in Egypt.

If I have given the book only four stars, it is because a) it will certainly not appeal to all readers (for me a five-star rating means "everyone must read this!"), and b) the prose can become cumbersome at times, especially when the author is performing the due diligence of a dissertation writer (situating his arguments within a discipline and methodology). The physical book is nicely produced, with the exception of a persistent printing malfunction that occasionally skips a letter or three; this does not make it unreadable, though. The volume is generously illustrated with photographs of people, places, and things that document a community now demolished.

Too shallow and too market-y for my tastes.
By Joshua Davis
The first thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the foreword by Robert Martin. In it Martin discusses that John emailed him a zip of the book and wanted a foreword written by a certain date. Martin wasn't able to do so because John only gave him 3 days notice. John sent Martin cheese and a ham and sent Martin multiple emails in which he was "imploring" Martin to write a foreword.

Eventually Martin says he skimmed some of the book in a few hours and wrote a shallow foreword for it. It just befuddles me that it would be included in the book as it is hardly glowing and doesn't put John in a very good light. I'm guessing having a half good foreword by a very well known member of the community beats a great foreword by someone that has no name recognition.

The biggest thing that struck me about this book is how shallow it is. In a book with 71 chapters, it is a bit hard to avoid this. Yet as I read it, I kept thinking about how each chapter could be summarized with a single paragraph in the way that it was written. Each chapter spanned 5-20 pages and contained the same amount of fluff.

All of the knowledge in each of the chapters could be learned by doing a single Google search on the topic. It certainly combines it all into a single place which might be convenient for some but the lack of true insight on the topics was very off putting. In books like these, the value is in the application and new ideas that come about from the author's experience and knowledge. I just didn't see any evidence of this regardless of how much John says that his ideas are brand new and better than the researchers and people that devote their lives to these topics.

The book is comprised of 7 sections: Career, Marketing, Learning, Productivity, Financial, Fitness and Spirit. Considering the shallowness that I mentioned, it would be easy to replace those sections with 7 well chosen and concise books written by researchers in each field with far more knowledge and practical advice.

In an incredibly creepy bit of advice, Chapter 5 entitled, what else other than "Hacking the Interview", John advocates hunting down the people that will be involved in the hiring decision for your interview and influencing them before the actual interview. In one example, he cites a developer that went so far as to find a local club that the hiring manager was apart of and went there and "became friends" with the manager. I think this is absolutely terrible advice that violates basic privacy fundamentals and business ethics. In some respects, it echoes the tactics used to get Robert Martin to write a foreword.

In the section about finances, it was shocking to hear how much of the "hustler" vibe that was given off. From renting out gumball machines (I didn't know that was a thing?), to helping start a payday loan business. I decided to ignore it and continue with the book. After reading it, I went to John's website, Simple Programmer. It completely confirmed my suspicion on the "market-ing" vibe that is given off. Who wouldn't want to "GREATLY increase your income" and "In Three Weeks" learn "How to Build a Blog That Will Boost Your Career" just by signing up for his email course that pops up within seconds of going to the site for the first time.

I'm a big fan of programmer blogs and other resources like that. I also think that there are some resources out there with far better information than this book. The obvious blogs being Joel Spolsky's writings, Jeff Atwood, Paul Graham, and Yegge. There are even some really great podcasts that delve into topics in this book. Software Engineering Radio is one as well as The Changelog, Hanselminutes and others. Really a quick search can help you find some good ones.

To summarize, I think any one that wants to read this would be better off finding individual books on each of the sections and reading them. There also are far better blogs out there with more content than this book. Not only will the advice be much more salient and more plentiful, but you'll also be able to avoid the marketing. If you hope that John's website will be a bit more content rich, you'll be even more disappointed with the shotgun-like approach to articles with a ton of ads and more than enough urgings for you to subscribe to his stuff.

The book I wish I'd had 30 years ago
By Andy Dent
I've been a fan of John's since I kept finding his blog posts as thought-provokers coming up in search results.

Soft Skills is now up there on my list of core professional books alongside "Pragmatic Programmer" and "Pragmatic Thinking and Learning" (I guess there but for choice of publisher goes "Pragmatic Sweat, Money and Success as a Developer"). It's not a technical book - the most technical thing in it is a recommendation to read "Code Complete" and "Clean Code". It's THE everything-else-apart-from-coding book.

The book is a very easy read with an awesome range of material covered in small, Pomodoro break-sized pieces. So, my recommendation is to skip to chapter 38, start applying Pomodoro as John describes, and give yourself a quota of chapters to digest every day.

My biggest critique is a chapter title - "Brushing your code" really should have been "Flossing your code" - Flossing gets more truly grungy stuff out of awkward corners and lots of feel regularly guilty about not doing it.

I wish, I really really wish, I'd read this book about 30 years ago because I had to figure out a lot of the self-promotional stuff the hard way. I'll probably spend the next 20 years working on my physique and real-estate portfolio.

I'm painfully well-qualified to comment on just how good John's recommendations are because I've applied a lot of them over the last 30 years, including working for myself, remotely and now being in a startup. I can tell you that a lot of the stuff works because I've proved that when you stop following his recommendations, bad things happen.

I'll let John have the last word:

"Not only will learning how to act like and be perceived as a professional help you to get better jobs and more clients, but it will also help you feel better about the kind of work you’re doing and to have pride in that work".

Personal kaizen!
By Tomas Rybing
John Sonmez has divided the book into seven sections with between 7-17 chapters in each, a total of 71 chapters all in all. They are short and to the point (5-10 pages each), and most of them can be read individually, i.e. you can read the book from cover to cover, or jump to the parts you are interested in and continue on from there.

The ”Career” section is, that you can imagine, useful tips on how to setup career goals, gain people skills, write a good resume and pass the interview. But it’s also about what different type of options you have (employee, independent consultant, or entrepreneur) and how to think if you want to switch.

Section 2, ”Marketing yourself” was a real eye opener for me personally. I never had thought about it in this way. I tried out some of the stuff mentioned, and it didn’t take long before I could see positive result! You have to read the section yourself to fully understand, but I can give you some quotes: ”marketing is a multiplier of talent”, ”a brand is a promise” and ”follower to fan”. In this section you can also find the advice that you should give away 90% of what you do for free (that personified John’s willingness to help me).

”Learning” is a very important section, given the ever evolving world we live in. I like the idea with the 10-step process for learning, though I haven’t had the time to try it out yet.

”Productivity” is another personal favorite of mine. Who don’t want to be productive? I really like chapter 37 - ”My Personal Productivity Plan”. It has a personal touch that I like, with great examples and pictures. The do’s and don'ts from chapter 41 about multi-tasking are also very good.

Section 5, ”Financial” has a very good tip on how to negotiate salary that is worth at least a 10% raise :) I can’t leave this section without mentioning chapter 55 - ”Bonus: How I retired at 33”. It’s very personal, and really shows that a travel from A to B usually aren’t a straight line.

To become a good software developer, or any knowledge worker for that matter, your body has to be reasonably ”up to speed” with your brain. This is covered in the ”Fitness” section. Maybe the most ”geek friendly” advice is the one about using a standing desk together with a treadmill.

Finally, section 7 is about ”Spirit”. Beforehand this was the least appealing section for me. But John does a good job not turning this into some spiritual mumbo jumbo.

Recommendation

When I re-read the foreword by Uncle Bob it all of a sudden clicked for me! This book is not about career, marketing yourself or fitness (well it is, but you understand what I mean). This book is about never giving up, to everyday make the version of yourself a little bit better than yesterday. I believe that this book will be a game changer for many software developers or knowledge workers in general (most of its content are applicable to larger audience). At least it has been for me. I can truly recommend ”Soft Skills”, its personal kaizen!
