Pretty good

I read quite a bit, being a literature major, but there were definitely some plot twists I didn't see coming. Overall, very well written, touches certain subjects (such as race, gender, family dynamics) in an interesting but tasteful manner. I don't mean to say that it's cookie cutter or doesn't properly touch on the subjects, rather it touches on the subject while doing an honest job of it. It doesn't touch on these subjects in order to grab your attention or keep you in the book, it does it in a natural way.

Really amazing literary work.
I bought this edition for a college class (American Literature) per request of the professor. The story itself is wonderful and very entertaining. The added bonus of the critical materials really help the reader understand the social atmosphere of the time period.

I almost Passed on Passing!

I admit that I wasn't really interested in reading this book. I was required to read it because it was our monthly bookclub selection. I initially disliked the book because I wasn't in love with the author's writing style. I thought that she was a bit too wordy. Once I realized that this book was written in the 20's, I was able to put down my prejudice against the author's writing style. Larson was truly a pioneer. She addressed a number of issues such as infedelity in this book that women in those days would've likely never spoke of. This was a quick and easy read with bits and pieces of supsense woven throughout the book. It was suprisingly good.

This book is not all inclusive but it is a good quick review. The topics that it does cover are in bulletpoint format which is great for right before the test. I used this 2 weeks before the April 2011 test and was happy with my results.
The best study material is still doing mock orals with your friends!

Cogent, Circumspect, Intriguing

Briggs seeks to illuminate Bacon's own understanding of science, and the role man may play in deciphering nature. The most interesting part of this book is the painstaking and illuminating attention Briggs pays to the tradition in which Bacon did his thinking and wrought his innovations. Briggs uncovers and deftly articulates subtle and influential 15th-16th century theories of magic and rhetoric that are fascinating and richly suggestive. I have found it to be a cogent, richly informative, and probing exploration of Bacon within the intellectual context in which he did his thinking. An invaluable read for students of rhetoric/language and the history of science.
