Accessible, well-designed -- this is the book you want

This book does a fabulous job of making the art of chalk lettering and illustration accessible. As she says, you don't need good handwriting to do this -- it's a different skill from that. And she shows, step by step, how to do it. It's very simple and easy, the way she shows it! The chalkboards that come with the book are useful as well, though it only took me a couple of days to buy an additional chalkboard so that I could practice without having to flip pages in the book all the time. I'm attaching a picture to show what I was able to do after going through this book. If you want to learn chalkboard art, this is a great book to start with!

Has it all - how to letter, how to embellish, how to make a complete design with words, frames and doodles.

I was looking for a good book on typography so that I could use it in my art journals. I looked through every book I could find in various book stores on typography - calligraphy, advertising design, ect and I couldn't find a book that showed how to design letters. Most of them were not helpful because they contained only one or two lessons and then a ton of empty pages for you to practice on (that's what my notebook and scratch paper is for - thank you very much). Then I came across this book and every single page was full of something to learn. She starts out slowly explaining 3 types of basic font (now I know what serif and sans serif means) and then shows different ways to embellish the basic fonts to make them fancier. Then she moves into warping the font (ie writing the letters in a arc, or slanting upward or downward. There is detailed discussion on how to draw more attention to some words within a phrase so that they catch the reader's eye by making them bigger or bolder or shaded. After you get the hang of lettering she moves into working a full design - frames, banners, laurel vines, snowflakes, arrows, stars, swirls ect combined with lettering. This was exactly the book I was looking for - how to letter, how to emphasize words within a phrase and then how to put it all together into a complete design. I like that the book has plenty of pictures to show you how to do it, but doesn't skimp on the written instruction either. The book is jam packed with info and low on useless filler material as I've seen in some of the other typography books. Worth every penny and can be applied to more than making chalk board signs.

I've been wanting to up my game with calligraphy and chalk lettering... This is one of the best books out there. Pretty on the outside, even more gorgeous on the inside. Don't even bother ordering on PDF. It comes with 3 very useful Chalkboards for practicing. How awesome is that?! Now to the juicy stuff... It has e-very-thing! What tools you need, how to prepare your chalkboard for battle, typography 101 courses, lots and lots of styles and tips to achieve your lettering goals... Imma go play with it because it is addictive. Do yourself a favor; order it now.

Born in London, Colin Falconer began traveling in his teens after realizing that making it as a professional soccer player was simply not in the stars for him. He hitchhiked around Europe and North Africa and explored much of Asia before moving to Australia, where he freelanced for leading newspapers and magazines as well as TV and radio. Colin raised two daughters with his late wife, Helen, and volunteered in the ambulance service for over thirteen years. His travels have served as inspiration for his forty-and-counting novels in print. Ranging from vivid historical intrigues to contemporary thrillers, Falconer’s work is enjoyed by a wide international audience and has been translated into twenty-three languages.

Interesting account of a fascinating queen

My predilection for historical fiction about royals is well-documented, so when I was approached about reviewing Colin Falconer's Isabella: Braveheart of France I was easily convinced, especially as I had just watched the episode of the BBC4 series She-Wolves: England's Early Queens about Isabella. And while Falconer's novel covers all the pertinent information of Isabella's life and gives us some inkling of what may have driven her to take over the English throne, I had a hard time connecting or staying connected to the main players in the novel, largely due to the stylistic choices made by the author.

Isabella's story is told from a third person perspective in the present tense in a rather fragmentary style and a somewhat dispassionate tone, with lots of scene breaks and short chapters. This makes it hard to settle into the narrative and connect to Isabella as a character. She starts out sympathetic enough, but during the course of the novel becomes embittered – not completely without cause obviously – and once we come to the end of the novel I found it hard to like her or be understanding of some of the choices she makes, trading a negligent husband for a domineering and callous lover she doesn't even seem to actually like. I also found the way that Isabella's internal dialogue isn't rendered in a clearly defined way problematic, as on several occasions it served more to confuse than to add to the story.

The novel covers Isabella's life from the moment she learns she's to marry Edward until the moment she's finally and irrevocably free from the marriage. Falconer manages to portray Isabella and Edward in a way that makes exceedingly clear how tragic their situation actually was. Isabella is traded away in marriage to ensure peace between England and France, only to find her husband is more interested in the stable boys than in her and she is quickly entrenched in a fierce rivalry with Edward's lover Piers Gaveston. It's this disappointment in her marriage, that fact that she was never first in her husband's affections that causes her slow embitterment and the ultimate breakdown of their partnership. Falconer spends quite some time building up Isabella's considerable political acumen and Edward's dislike of kingship, both due to the restrictions it places upon him and due to the fact that he can never measure up to the legend of his father, Edward I.

At one point in their marriage, after Gaveston is murdered by Edward's barons, they create a smoothly working partnership with Isabella masterminding a kingdom and power for Edward that allows him to avenge his beloved Piers' death. Despite knowing how the story ends, I still found myself hoping they'd work it out and have if not a happy marriage at least a solid one. Falconer seems to be hesitant to portray either of them as the villain in the marriage, instead squarely placing the blame on the Despenser, who becomes Edward's confidant after he loses Piers. Despenser is a venal, cruel, and greedy man who seemingly without conscience destroys people and families for his own gain. It's this that prompts the barons to take action against Edward, but it's not the sole reason Isabella decides to lead them. She is the proverbial woman scorned and she decides to take her fate in her own hands.

She's also driven by her affair with one of Edward's baron Lord Roger Mortimer. A man who has seemingly coveted Isabella from the first time he sees her. While the affair is historically accurate, Falconer never managed to make me believe it. It just seemed so abrupt and, while passionate, just as devoid of true love and companionship as Isabella's marriage to Edward. I think that was the point that the novel truly started to lose me, because I just couldn't wrap my head around this burgeoning affair. Add to this the fact that at this point I'd also lost any overview of which lord was which and whether they were the elder or the younger or newly created and the last third of the novel became a bit of a slog.

Isabella: Braveheart of France is an interesting account of a fascinating queen, but it suffered from its fragmentary pacing, dispassionate tone, and the seeming lack of loving connection between Isabella and Mortimer. If you're looking for a novel to familiarise yourself with Isabella's story, Isabella: Braveheart of France is a good choice, though it doesn't tell her entire story, since it stops after she and the barons dethrone Edward II. If you're looking for a satisfying love story or drama, however, you might be left a little underwhelmed by Isabella and Mortimer.

I am embarassed for the author

Isabella has a great story, this is NOT the telling of it. The story is lost behind typos, poor English. One chapter repeats the first three paragraphs of the chapter before it...word for word. Sentences have words such as "She" capitalized in the middle. The book is nearly unreadable, due to the worst editing I have ever seen. The story was a disappointment for this author, don't give up on him, but pass on this book.

So many typos that it was hard to read with enjoyment. It is a great story and probably would have gotten a 4 or 5 star review, but I couldn't ignore the incorrect tenses, wrong pronouns, repeat phrases and multiple digital errors. Sloppy

Very little detail.

I was expecting a little more from a book entitled automotive electronics. If you are looking for a jack of all trades and master of none type book this one will give you an overview of most of the systems in an automobile but definitely not anything to do with electronics.

Great textbook/engineering book

I spent $140 buying the 3-volume set of shop manuals for my car, but found very little information about how the systems worked. This made it tough for me to diagnose problems (e.g., low tire pressure warning message when all the tire pressures were correct) when taking the car to the shop. This book is not a Do-It-Yourself manual nor a repair guide, but rather a collection of chapters written by subject matter experts covering the sensors and systems in today's vehicles. I have found it very useful.

About the Author
Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

"What those guys said"

The reviews on this book are remarkably accurate. This is not a childrens' book. Even though decades have passed since it was first published, no other text has been able to bump it off a 'best in class' position. If you want to look to the sky for familiar shapes, this is the book for you.

There are a couple of fundamental ways to study the heavens. A 'modern' approach might be to put your head down, click in a few celestial coordiantes, and wait for the telescope to find a target for you. However a more interesing approach would be to find shape in the sky and locate targets manually. To do that you need to recognize those old landmarks in the sky, the constellations.

The big problem in identifying constellations is to find shape from seemingly random dots. Ray creatively used the same stars, but made 'new' stick diagrams that actually look like what they are supposed to represent. This makes a constellation much easier to visualize, remember, and recognize later. Other texts that attempt this effort fall short because they don't emphasize visual recognition clues.

A major fault of modern texts is the inclusion of unnecessary detail. Ray puts in a few choice details that help the memory and add interesting character to the figures in the sky. But by excluding minutia he draws the reader back to the goal at hand. Ultimately you need to memorize a blueprint of the sky, and this workbook will be your best friend to help reach that goal. Bravo.

A Guide to the Stars Simple Enough for Curious George but Sophisticated Enough for You!

The best introductory guide to the stars and constellations, bar none! It has numerous features which makes learning the constellations much easier and more fun. Here are a few examples:

(1) H.A. Rey has done a great service by redrawing the constellations (using the same stars) so that they *actually* look like the figure they represent. This is in contrast to so many other constellation drawings (by others) that bear no resemblance at all to the figure they supposedly represent. They come in two varieties: either they are lifelike representations with no correlation at all between the figure and the individual stars or they are stick figures that look more like abstract art!

(2) Rather than deluging you with lots of irrelevant facts, H.A. Rey has chosen some very pertinent, interesting facts and anecdotes to share about the stars and the constellations. These are the kind of facts that are fun to share with others when you introduce them to the constellations!

(3) H.A. Rey has very wisely left the more detailed and technical explanations for discussion later in the book. He starts off by telling you just the basics that you need to start stargazing right away!

(4) On the Calendar Chart pages you will see two star charts on facing pages. On the left you'll see just the stars and on the right you'll see the stars with the connecting lines to show the constellations. Going back and forth between the pages is a great way to start to memorize the celestial patterns so that when you get outside it will be easier to pick them out!

The Ultimate Guide to the Constellations

If you've ever wanted to REALLY learn the constellations, this is the best book ever written to do just that. Rey's style of depicting the characters up in the night sky as stick figures makes them very easy to find, learn, and remember for both children and adults. Rey uses the English translation of the constellation names, making them even more user-friendly (though he also gives their classical names, as well).

Other methods use only the brightest stars contained within the constellation and draw lines between them to form odd-shaped geometric figures which don't really have anything to do with their namesake. For example: Hercules, using the Rey method, looks like a stick-figure man running and brandishing a club. The geometric style shows a box with lines radiating out, away from it, sort of like a childish pinwheel. Believe it or not, there are some people who are actually devoted to this non-sensical method of showing constellations(!) and hate the Rey system because it's not the way *they* learned them.

Rey's book also contains a wealth of other, more technical, information about our solar system, how the Earth's sky has its own mapping grid (similar to the Earth's lines of latitude and longitude), and there are even easy-to-use tables for finding the visible planets (Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn) at any time of the year for the next ten years.

As a child, I tried to learn the constellations from books and charts that used the geometric style, and after a few tries, gave up. The names meant nothing to me, and the shapes were dull and made no sense. Then I got hold of "The Stars: A New Way To See Them," by H.A. Rey, and within 6 months I found and memorized more than half of the constellations visible from light-polluted San Jose.

Detractors say learning Rey's constellations will make learning the "standard" or "conventional" (i.e. "dull" or "nonsensical") constellations more difficult. Pure poppycock. I have had zero problem with this, and can use both methods as easily as you might interpret a stop sign using the word "stop," or one using the international "no" symbol over an upraised palm. There's a huge advantage to learning Rey's method, in that you can use it to get people interested in astronomy much more easily!

I'm into amateur astronomy, now, heavily involved with volunteer work at the local observatory. It's the highlight of my night to be able to hear children say, "I can see it! I can see it!" when I point out a constellation to them, and show it to them in Rey's book. Who knows? Maybe I've started something for those kids...
