Great book for beginners.........

This is a book, in my opinion, for people who have no idea what DNA is and how to test for it. I found it very easy to read and understand. For people who have knowledge of DNA, you will find this book boring and non-informative. Therefore I would recommend this book to anyone who has interest in DNA and has no knowledge of the subject. This book gives you the basics.

This is really something of an introduction to DNA Analysis on a middle school level, and really didn't go into a lot of detail as I had hoped it would.

Like last year's Crush Depth, this adventure features Jeffrey Fuller, commander of the super sub USS Challenger, locked in mortal combat in the year 2011 with his usual enemy, a submariner from the German navy. This time out, that adversary is Commander Ernst Beck, at the helm of the jewel of the fatherland's U-boat fleet, the Admiral von Scheer. As in Buff's previous Fuller adventures, the world is in the chaos of nuclear war. The Germans have teamed up with the South Africans, where the whites have retaken control, to form the "Axis." On the other side, the "Allies" are a loose confederation headed by the United States and Great Britain. With the Allies struggling to hold onto central Africa and prevent the Axis from spreading its reach into South America, Fuller is dispatched to seek and destroy the von Scheer, which has been littering the floor of the Atlantic with the hulls of Allied ships for months. The action ends in an exhilarating if inevitable showdown off the African coast. Buff brings both a descriptive flair and an undeniable knowledge of undersea warfare to his series. Here, he has also wisely chosen to jettison a silly, plot-diverting love affair that Fuller has been nurturing for the past couple of books. Yet the inevitability of the ending, almost identical to others in the series, makes this one a tiresome journey.

About the Author

Joe Buff is a Life Member of the U.S. Naval Institute, the Navy League of the United States, the CEC/Seabees Historical Foundation, and the Fellows of the Naval War College. Respected for his technical knowledge, he is considered an expert on submarines and national defense. Two of his nonfiction articles about future submarine technology have won the Annual Literary Award from the Naval Submarine League. He is the author of five previous highly regarded novels of submarine warfare—Straits of Power, Tidal Rip, Crush Depth, Thunder in the Deep, and Deep Sound Channel. He lives with his wife in Dutchess County, New York.

Joe Buff -- fast becoming THE Submarine author to watch...

It pretty much began with Clancy's 'Hunt For Red October' and shortly afterwards Michael DiMercurio took the Submarine baton and ran (is still running, actually) with it. Not long ago Patrick Robinson began his own Sub series (sorry, they just didn't *do it* for me) but it has been Joe Buff that has really made this particular techno-genre his own.

For those familiar with Buff's previous novels (Deep Sound Channel & Crush Depth) you know that a new Axis Power has formed between chiefly Germany and the newly white empowered South Africa against chiefly the United Kingdom and the United States. This is no ordinary war, either. It is a battlefield where the use of tactical nuclear weapons is an almost daily event. Somewhere in the back of my mind I wonder just how many nuclear weapons we have to dispense during this war because all those involved seem to be using them with reckless abandon. The war has created a major breakdown in shipping throughout the Atlantic, which has brought our story to several interesting and above all else, exciting missions in this series thus far. One item I have noticed that many readers did NOT enjoy was the passive love story arc that began with the first novel. Thankfully this storyline has been left firmly in the background of 'Tidal Rip'.

The action is swift and plentiful, and once again, amazingly realistic. A good friend of mine spent several years in the Silent Service and assured me that Joe Buff was the Real Deal when it came to the realism of how a future naval nuclear war might happen. Of course a lot is pure speculation, however given the circumstances that Buff has created starting with his first novel, the action of both sides is amazingly accurate. For those techno-thriller fans who enjoy their warfare on the realistic side, you simply cannot ignore these books. The plot is in MY opinion, quite compelling despite what some of the so-called 'professional' reviewers have written. Suffice it to say that if you enjoy tales of war written from the perspective of a submariner and you HAVEN'T read Joe Buff yet, you certainly have some great stuff to look forward to. Fine brain candy, and a chilling scenario which I fervently hope does NOT come to pass.

Even better crafted than the previous two

Buff's first novel, Deep Sound Channel, was for me a defining work in the genre. But after the shock factor at the massive scale of the limited nuclear war wore off, his two followup novels perhaps overdid that shock factor until it became numbing. After a while, it seemed that Buff had fallen into a trap of having to outdo himself, by scripting even more implausible escapes from even larger nuclear explosions. Those two novels, while certainly action packed, seemed to follow almost the same story line, with the climax of the third novel being the only real distinction between novels two and three.
I will leave the plot synopsis to other, but have to say that in this book, Buff gets back on track. We learn more about the politics of the ongoing war, and the battles become more than underwater slugfests. The submarines are quieter, the tension greater. I liked the addition of a new set of navy seals, led by a new character.
The war spreads, with "neutral" nations starting to lean one way or the other, and a spectre of escalation into full fledged thermonuclear war becoming a very real possibility.
Also, for the first time in the series, we see real growth in the character of Jeffery Fuller. For the first time I saw in him someone with the potential to lead a larger force. All in all, an enjoyable read that I voraciously devoured with great satisfaction.

Tidal thriller

This is the second novel I have read by Joe Buff (the other being CRUISH DEPTH).
TIDAL RIP is an extraordinarily satisfying thriller that continues the story of the Boer/Axis war against America. The situation is desperate as Europe has already falen under the new Nazi domination and the axis powers are attempting to link up in Africa. Just as in previous wars, a convoy on men and equipment is steaming across the Atlantic to shift the tide.
Into this mix fall two submarine commanders: Ernest Beck and Jeffry Fuller. They command the world's most advanced submarine platforms (ceramic hulled, deep diving predators). Beck's mission is to kill the convoy and possibly win the war. Fuller's mission is to kill Beck. They have the whole Atlantic in which to fight.
A very satisfying read. Just one caution: Once I got going, I just kept turning the pages and forgot about going to bed.

Finally devastated by his inferiority and shamed by the shabby way he's treated his pals, the orange pup apologizes to Ladybug, Mole, Goose, and Donkey. During a group hug, they kindly assure him that he's the best at having "beautiful fluffy ears. And we love you." The story ends with Dog confident that his talent is the most important of all, so, in fact, he is still "the best." As always, Cousins invigorates her cartoons with color and charm. Her splotches and whirls convey depth and movement. The simply drawn characters have a comic flair and, like Ladybug in her tutu, beguile upon first glance. He outruns Mole in a race, beats Goose in a digging contest, bests Ladybug in terms of size, and swims better than Donkey. Each time, he announces, “I win. I’m the best.” His friends feel sad until they realize that Mole’s the best digger, Duck’s the best swimmer, Donkey’s the biggest, and Ladybug can fly highest. Suddenly realizing that he has been “a silly SHOW-OFF” and mean to his friends, downcast Dog apologizes. After they reassure him that they value his friendship and admire his “beautiful fluffy ears,” his irrepressible bravado surges again. Dog’s simple, childlike narration moves the story forward while making the most of this distinctive character and his flip-flopping emotional state, from his thoughtless, heartless declarations of superiority to his glum realization that he has hurt his friends to his final exclamation about the supreme importance of fluffy ears. The book’s large format gives plenty of range for Cousins’ naive, expressive pencil-and-ink illustrations. From the exuberant text to the bold, colorful artwork, a joyous spirit pervades this picture book and its fallible yet lovable protagonist. This one is the best!

I love Lucy Cousins! Her books are always great for story time sharing because of the big bold pictures and her simple, beautiful stories. I'm the Best is all about a dog (in perfect rainbow plaid pants of course) who loves to brag. He is always telling his friends that he is better than they are at everything, not realizing that he is making them feel sad. The friends then tell him that they are the best at things too, and he finally understands how mean he has been. The friends forgive him and tell him they think he is the best too, and they share a nice hug. A great little story about the dangers of bragging and being a show off. But wait! You turn to the last page, and I'll be darn if that dog isn't up to his old bragging once again. Just when we thought he'd learned his lesson!

I know that final page is meant to be funny, but I wish the author had stopped with that last hug. The dog going back to his old habits just seems to take away from the message a bit. That was my only complaint about this really cute book. Ms. Cousins' illustrations are engaging and whimsical and I am once again amazed that she tells such a good story with so few words. A must have for any toddler or preschooler!

This shining tale of Dog, the critter who thought he was the best at everything, will make your youngster smile!

Dog smiled and danced around in his multicolored checkered shorts practically shouting to the world, "Hello, I'm Dog, and I'm the best." Dog had four friends, Ladybug, Mole, Goose, and Donkey. He really loved his friends, but he still considered himself to be the best. He was better than they were in so many ways. He could run faster than Mole and grinned as he left him in the dust. As Goose looked on and tried to dig a hole with his webbed feet Dog dug like crazy and claimed he was much better at digging. They probably weren't happy when he boasted, "I win. I'm the best."

Of course he claimed he was larger than Ladybug, who was just a little thing. When Dog and Donkey went for a swim, his dog paddle was much better than Donkey's awkward swimming. Dog was such a braggart that he claimed, of course, that he was better than everyone at everything. Very soon all his friends were feeling very sad because Dog outshone them at every turn. All of a sudden things began to look different when Mole started to dig a hole and was better at it than Dog. Was Dog really the best at everything? Would his friends teach him a lesson he wouldn't forget?

This shining tale of Dog, the critter who thought he was the best at everything, will make your youngster smile. There is always one in the crowd who could benefit by learning a bit of humility. This book is a gentle reminder that such a quality can go a long way and will resonate with many children. Of course this tale is quite humorous in spite of its more serious message and the peppy, colorful artwork meshes perfectly with the story. This dynamic tale would be a fun one to read and discuss during circle or story time. If you are a Lucy Cousins fan, you know what being the best is all about!

Simply the best

In this upbeat offering from Cousins, uber-competitive Dog is more than happy to inform his friends Ladybug, Mole, Goose and Donkey just who exactly is top dog. Dog can run faster than Mole, dig holes better than Goose, far outclasses Ladybug in terms of physical size, and can swim better than Donkey. Depressed at being outshone, Dog's friends all sit down to sulk until they realize that much like the game of rock-paper-scissors, they each have their own strengths: Mole can dig better than Dog, Goose can swim better, Donkey is the biggest of all of them, and Ladybug can fly, something that Dog can't do at all. Devastated, a weeping Dog realizes that he isn't the best after all and he tearily admits, "I'm mean to my friends." They reassure him that he has beautiful fluffy ears, which leaves Dog feeling like he's back on top again.

Clean backgrounds with plenty of white space makes the bold pencil-lined, bright watercolor illustrations really pop. Seeing the characters moods dip between glee, pride, dejection, disappointment and back again, with just a few simple lines is a testament to Cousin's skill as an illustrator. There's a child-like charm to the simple flowers, trees and sun that show up on a few of the pages. The inferred lesson of the book, about the perils of boasting, is delivered with a lot of humor and charm and never hits a didactic note. This funny story will suit children ages 2-5.
