This two volume ebook is a great new resource to help the experienced fossil collector as well as novice and student to identify fossils of the Tennessee Valley. Five hundred (500) of the most common marine fossils are covered in beautiful, detailed photos and historical geological context. The photos are amazing and as a fossil collector of the Tennessee Valley I must say that this is the best material I have evere seen in publication. The ebook covering Crinoids and Blastoids really covers everything in the Bangor Limestone Formation which is the area of my interest. I have both ebooks and they are quite amazing.

This is an excellent book for identifying fossils in Tennessee & Kentucky, and possibly other states. There are many photos to help identify your finds and then learn about those fossils from the author' knowledgable summary on each. Well done and I would highly recommend this book, as well as the second book, to any fossil collector.

Too close to his subject?

I finished this book thinking that Bill Milkowski was just way too close to his subject to do a true biography - at times, particularly towards the end, it becomes "my life with Jaco". However, that closeness does give Milkowski some insights into Jaco's personality that another author probably wouldn't have. Milkowski correctly recognizes that one of Jaco's greatest problems was the people surrounding him. One striking thing about the book was how many people close to Jaco blamed the "system" for failing Jaco (the author included), yet amazingly, how his family allowed a total stranger to convince a judge to release him under his own recognizance, 4 days before he received the fatal beating at the Midnight Bottle Club. However, unlike the treatment of John Belushi in Wired or Jim Morrison in No One Here Gets Out Alive, Milkowski avoids mythologyzing. Milkowski recognizes that when a supremely talented person destroyes himself, it's not heroic, it's tragic.

For some reason or another I have read a number of books along this same vein. Successful Musician, gifted, genius, thunderbolt from heaven, then poof, they self destruct and are gone long before they should be... yet are memorialized because of the ground they broke. Bix Beiderbeck, Jimi Hendrix, Chet Baker, Charlie Parker etc...
While this book covers the basic time line information, it doesn't really get to deep below the surface. Perhaps because there are too many people too fond of Jaco.
Should the journalist delve deeply or just run a shallow narrative concerning the life and times of Jaco Pastorius? Jaco had severe problems which led to his untimely death. While he was taken early in a altercation outside of a bar... he had already pushed the self destruct button and appeared to be beyond anyone's reach.
Sadly, no one came forward to really help this suffering soul. A few tried, and yes the responsibility ultimately rests with the individual, but Jaco was in need of some serious tough lov., Could it have worked? We'll never know.
Rest peacefully Jaco, you WERE loved and ARE missed.

A compulsive read.....................

.......Milkowski's book is an effort that should be applauded by all who pick up its pages. When I first looked at the intro to the book, I found it a fascinating look into the genius and tragedy of this landmark musician. Unlike others, who have stated that the book falls short in examining Jaco's psychological short comings and mental closet skeletons, I found the read not to be wanting in any area describing his life. Not only is it a book that is I feel is mandatory reading for any music lover.........it is a book that even the non musician can appreciate as well. The shock and saddness in which the stories unfold make the subject of Jaco as a performer simply a compelling story which the reader begins to empathize with Jaco but feels the same helplessness as those within the book while reading along to the inevitable conclusion. An easy read, and I've read that book at least 3 or 4 times and still pick it up to refer to some of the of profound statements and observation about not only Jaco's life........but the with human experience in all of us as well...Finally, this book (as a screenplay) would make an unbelievable movie ....Kudos to Bill...........RIP Jaco

Since polygamy was abolished by manifesto in 1890, this is a story of secrecy and lies, of poverty and imprisonment and government raids. When raids threatened, the families were forced to scatter from their pastoral compound in Salt Lake City to the deserts of Mexico or the wilds of Montana. To follow the Lord's plan as dictated by the Principle, the human cost was huge. Eventually murder in its cruelest form entered when members of a rival fundamentalist group assassinated the author's father.

Dorothy Solomon, monogamous herself, broke from the fundamentalist group because she yearned for equality and could not reconcile the laws of God (as practiced by polygamists) with the vastly different laws of the state. This poignant account chronicles her brave quest for personal identity. Originally published in hardcover under the title Predators, Prey, and Other Kinfolk.

Dorothy Allred Solomon lives in Park City, Utah. She is the recipient of several awards from the Utah Arts Council and a Governor's Media Award for Excellence.

Surprisingly Dull and Disappointing

There is probably a good story here. During the course of the author's life, (SPOILER ALERTS) her father marries 6 women; one wife leaves the family, taking her children (the author's half-siblings) with her; her mother suffers from severe mental health problems; and her dad, a doctor, is shot to death at his practice -- in front of one of his wives. Any and all of that would be interesting to explore in-depth. Instead, the author chooses to spend an entire (long) chapter detailing her family's history, starting with her great-grandparents. I know that genealogy is important to Mormon folks, but I'm not a Mormon, and I've never lived in Utah, so none of the people, places, or events she described had any significance to me. I got bored, put the book down, and never picked it up again.

Honest View of Polygamy in Religion

This is the second book I have read about polygamy. This is completely foreign to my Protestant upbringing. I have seen people caught in a cult situation before. My neighbors when I was a young child were not allowed to celebrate Christmas, salute the flag, or celebrate any other holidays.
I will not mention there religion. Inside their home terrible things were happening to their children. I didn't find out about it until I was a grown woman.

This is the type of thing that Dorothy Solomon is talking about. She had a good mother. She was aware that the other children called them names. She knew other children had only one set of parents. Her father was married to 7 women. She believed as she was taught. She believed in polygamy. As she grows older she sees the sorrow in the women around her who are not honored by this state of affairs. Her parents had been arrested and they had to go into hiding as children. She even discusses incest in such an environment. It obviously is not a good environment for a woman to feel any equality with a man in. When more groups form a terrible thing happens to her father. The book is fascinating. A real page turner.
She horrifies her family by joining the regular Church of the Latter Day Saints. She marries only once and has children. She is a strong person.
Thank you for showing us a world that most will never see. You have without a doubt helped other women trapped in this situation.

A terrific read

I tore through this memoir in a couple of days. I could not put it down. This woman's account of her life as a fugitive and a "trouble maker" is incredible and heartwrenching. It's so much more interesting to me if I know someone actually went through this. I can't imagine ever living in the kind of poverty this family did, or having to share my father or see my mother's hidden tears when her husband went off with another wife (or 6) a few nights a week.

Allred does a pretty thorough job going through the genealogy and geographic movements of her family and it only serves to bring the tale even more to life. I'm sure I could go read newspaper articles about all she mentioned, and read the very journal Byron wrote in his travels. It's great to be able to trace everything all over the US and watch the world change around the family and the church and yet nothing ever really changes for them. I very much recommend this book to anyone looking to find out more about this controversial issue. See it from the eyes of a young girl lost in a sea of many.
