Eric Liberatos constructs a provocative thesis which challenges standard interpretations of the role of reincarnation in the formation of the early Christian Church. The writer has an alert and sensitive mind which can ignore the familiar surfaces of established intellectual codes and ask new questions. The reader is placed within the context of early Christian philosophy and is informed about who Origen was and why his doctrines were perceived as controversial. Through his analysis, the writer informs the reader of the political controversies that ultimately led to Origen's condemnation. The Case against Origen and Reincarnation can be highly recommended as a complex and well written piece of historical literature which exposes the contentious politics of the religious leaders of that era.

When I see a new book covering the topic of historical ninjutsu (the art of stealth and endurance), it is a very exciting thing for me. Normally, too many books are sensationalistic, and not very useful or even historically correct.

When I came across “The Illustrated Ninja Handbook” the moment I saw the Tuttle publishing icon on the cover, I had high hopes for a quality book. Tuttle has some high standards for books concerning the martial arts. This book is a paperback, with fine glossy paper, and is packed with excellent full color photographs and images.

Leafing trough the book, I knew right away this was a bona fide instructional book with authentic information. Having studied ninjutsu myself through Bujinkan International since 1984, it was easy to recognize the terminology demonstrated by the authors, Remigiusz Borda and Marian Winiecki.

The first thing to impress me was the format of step by step photographs demonstrating the waza (techniques). It was also great to see many such techniques I was unfamiliar with, so I recommend this book to both the novice, and the seasoned martial artist.

This handbook traces the historical roots of Japan’s ancient ninja. It also examines the lineage of the nine Ryu (schools or traditions) taught in the Bujinkan. Special attention is paid to some of the vast weaponry used by both the ninja and samurai.

This includes the commonly known shuriken (throwing blades and spikes) to the more exotic Shuko (iron claws) and Kyoketsu Shoge (hooked dagger, with cord and iron ring).

The Kamae (fighting postures), unarmed combat (taijutsu) and armed combat are explained with great clarity and are easy to understand.
The terminology nomenclature of the weapons is very accurate.

One chapter focuses on the Kunoichi (female ninja).

I strongly believe that this book belongs in the collection of anyone seriously interested in the arts of Japans legendary ancient warriors. It is of enormous importance as a reference source.

In conclusion, this book is very valuable to anyone interested in learning more about Japan’s ninja and their art, ninjutsu.

Excellent Guide to True Bujinkan Training

As an instructor, I found this book wonderfully delightful. It covers Sanshin and Kihon beautifully with absolutely fabulous colorful pictures to go with the step by step description of each technique. A MUST have for any practitioner of ninjutsu. From hand to hand, to weapons defensively/offensively, The Illustrated Ninja Handbook: Hidden Techniques of Ninjutsu is by far one of the best books in my collection. Well done.

Great Intro

I really liked reading and looking at "The Illustrated Ninja Handbook." Remigiusz Borda has put together a great intro book to the Bujinkan. The bulk of the book contains beautifully illustrated techniques out of the Bujinkan, and would be a great help to a beginning student as a reference guide. Perhaps not for a brand new student, and Borda rightly points out very dangerous techniques that he shows. The book would be very helpful for someone (maybe 7th Kyu - who has seen the bulk of the techniques at least once by then) and all the way down to their Shodan. Obviously you don't learn martial arts form a book, but it is a great visual reminder of the various techniques. Over all - it was nicely done, and is a stunning visual book. Good job.

About the Author
Allen E. Ivey received in Ed.D. from Harvard. He is Distinguished University Professor (Emeritus) at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and is currently President of Microtraining Associates, an educational publishing firm. An A.B.P.P. in counseling psychology, Dr. Ivey is a past-president and Fellow of the Division of Counseling Psychology of the American Psychological Association and is been a life member of American Counseling Association. He has published over 25 books and 200 articles in his career. His works have been translated into multiple languages.

Norma Block Gluckstern is Vice President of Microtraining Associates and was formerly the Warden of Pautuxent, a male psychiatric prison. She was the only woman warden of a male prison at the time and won considerable distinction for innovative treatment programming. She is an experience psychotherapist and author of several books published by Microtraining Associates over the years. She has presented her work widely by lecture and by videotape. She has been featured on 60 Minutes and other national TV programs.

Mary Bradford Ivey has her doctorate from the University of Massachusetts and is currently Vice President of Microtraining Associates. She is a former school counselor and she received special recognition when her program was named one of the ten most effective in the United States. She has co-authored multiple books widely translated and has lectured and keynoted throughout the world.

Ordered this December 1st just received it. My granddaughter is a Goosebumps fan, however I was very disappointed that this was maybe 20 pages and it had the movie information in it an very little story. If there is a story it is a very short one, from now on I will continue to purchase the Goosebumps stories but I will do it in a store where I can physically view the book.
