To his contemporaries in Gilded Age Manhattan, Guillermo Eliseo was a fantastically wealthy Mexican, the proud owner of a luxury apartment overlooking Central Park, a busy Wall Street office, and scores of mines and haciendas in Mexico. But for all his obvious riches and his elegant appearance, Eliseo was also the possessor of a devastating secret: he was not, in fact, from Mexico at all. Rather, he had begun life as a slave named William Ellis, born on a cotton plantation in southern Texas during the waning years of King Cotton.

After emancipation, Ellis, capitalizing on the Spanish he learned during his childhood along the Mexican border and his ambivalent appearance, engaged in a virtuoso act of reinvention. He crafted an alter ego, the Mexican Guillermo Eliseo, who was able to access many of the privileges denied to African Americans at the time: traveling in first-class train berths, staying in upscale hotels, and eating in the finest restaurants.

Eliseo’s success in crossing the color line, however, brought heightened scrutiny in its wake as he became the intimate of political and business leaders on both sides of the US-Mexico border. Ellis, unlike many passers, maintained a connection to his family and to black politics that also raised awkward questions about his racial status. Yet such was Ellis’s skill in manipulating his era’s racial codes, most of the whites he encountered continued to insist that he must be Hispanic even as Ellis became embroiled in scandals that hinted the man known as Guillermo Eliseo was not quite who he claimed to be.

The Strange Career of William Ellis reads like a novel but offers fresh insights on the history of the Reconstruction era, the US-Mexico border, and the abiding riddle of race. At a moment when the United States is deepening its connections with Latin America and recognizing that race is more than simply black or white, Ellis’s story could not be more timely or important.

Good historical non-ficton that reads like a novel.

Reads live a novel but it actually falls under the category of historical non-fiction. The author did extensive research. It took him decades, he said, to investigate the life and times of William Ellis, a master "trickster". The reader will readily acknowledge the commendable biographical piece of historical non-fiction this book is. Get your copy today and read on for more insights.

True story of how a Texas plantation slave reinvented himself as a wealthy and sophisticated Mexican tycoon.

Interesting look at a man, William Ellis, who transcended his birth and childhood as a plantation slave in south Texas to take on a persona of an elegant, successful Mexican entrepreneur. Mr. Jacoby provides a great deal of historical background into that time period and uses it to craft an amazing story. However, at times it felt a little overwhelming in scope. Well written and well edited (thank goodness!) this is a story that would be unbelievable if not backed up with so much historical proof.

An engaging, amazing story - Ellis had an incredible life; good history, touching on social issues in the U.S. & Mexico, Mexican politics, and the complicated economic & political relationship between our neighboring countries;a healthy dose of Texana, shedding light on a social order that needs to be better understood by all residents of the Lone Star State.

About the Author

Garry Martin, a native Manitoban, attended Colorado College on a hockey scholarship, where he received the BA degree. He then attended Arizona State University for the MA and PhD degrees. Garry returned to Manitoba in 1966 and taught in the Department of Psychology at the University of Manitoba until his retirement at the end of 2008. He is currently a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the U of M, and he continues to supervise graduate students, teach part-time, and write and publish. He has co-authored or co-edited 8 books and over 150 journal articles on various areas in behavioral psychology. His book, Behavior Modification: What It Is and How to Do It, with Dr. Joseph Pear, first published in 1978, is used as a primary text at many universities in 14 countries and various editions have been translated into Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, and Korean. His research on behavioral training technologies for improving the quality of life of people with developmental disabilities and children with autism has been supported continuously by the Medical Research Council of Canada, and now the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for the past 32 years. He has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international conferences around the world. He has supervised 38 Masters theses, and 32 PhD theses at the University of Manitoba, and has received numerous honors and awards, including induction into the Royal Society of Canada. At the 2010 Annual Convention of the Canadian Psychological Association, Garry received the CPA Education and Training Award, the most prestigious education and training award the discipline confers in Canada.

Dr. Joseph J. Pear, Professor of Psychology at the University of Manitoba, received the B.S. degree from the University of Maryland and the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from The Ohio State University. A fellow of Division 6 (Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology) and Division 25 (Behavior Analysis) of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Pear has done both basic and applied research. His early applied work was with children with developmental disabilities at the St. Amant Centre, where he founded the Behaviour Modification Unit (now the Psychology Department) in the early 1970s. More recently, he developed Computer-Aided Personal System of Instruction (CAPSI), an instructional program based on the Keller Plan. CAPSI is an award winning program that is being used to teach a number of courses at University of Manitoba and at several other universities in Canada and the United States. It is also a research tool that Dr. Pear and his graduate students use to research the teaching and learning dimensions of university education. Dr. Pear has also done basic research with pigeons and fish using a tracking system that he developed. In addition to Behavior Modification: What It Is and How to Do It with Dr. Garry Martin, Dr. Pear has written two other books: The Science of Learning and A Historical and Contemporary Look at Psychological Systems. He has also written numerous research articles and two encyclopedia articles: “Psychological Systems” in The Corsini Encyclopedia of Psychology (Fourth Edition) and “Physiological Homeostasis and Learning” in Encyclopedia of the Sciences of Learning. He has received awards for Outstanding Contribution to Behaviour Analysis in Manitoba and for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Technology. He also received the Fred S. Keller Behavioral Education Award for Distinguished Contributions to Education.

Textbook, But Not

I used this book as a special education undergraduate. I found it contained all of the essential information in a format that was not bogged down with technical language. I have since loaned the book to several parents who found its information useful and its style easy and unintimidating. It is full of common, everyday examples in order to help one transition from the theoretical to the concrete.

A practical book that works

There is a ton of usable information in this book. The problem is getting past the jargon and text book manner in which it is written. It really is more for university students than the lay person. Keep in mind that it is a text book for 2 consecutive psychology semesters. So, if the answers do not jump out at you, then do not get frustrated. I have read it through a few times and still do not grasp some of it. If you have the patience to apply something as simple as the operant conditioning, you can actually make a habit within a month. For instance, I used to reward myself with 15 minutes of fiction reading for every chapter of biology that I read. Result? I went from a D to a B within a couple of months. I have helped some of my clients do the same procedure with quitting smoking and sticking with fitness plans. This book is one of the few university text books that I kept after my degree.

This is a very detailed book about behavior modification. It literally traces the history of behavioral modification from its origins and progresses into actual techniques that can be used in a variety of setting. Some of the chapters are quite dense, yet interesting. There is a comprehensive summary and the authors do a wonderful job with breaking down large units of information into readable points. There is a useful guide for functional analysis provided. The behavior contract is generic, but a decent basis for an individualized one. Finally, many behavioral methods are explained in simple terms and there are numerous examples that illustrate their usefulness.

You don't have to read it first!

I'll start with the disclaimer that I've read Shawn Achor's The Happiness Advantage several times before coming to this book, and my rating is largely based on the differences between the books. The Happiness Advantage provides a slew of research and tools which are easy to implement and highly effective. You can adopt any of these at any point in your life and start seeing immediate results. I consider it one of the best books on understanding happiness and finding more of it in your life.

Before Happiness takes a different approach. It lays out and recommends a more structured plan to follow that looks a lot like other success formulas - understanding your values, setting goals, and then using various techniques to reach them. This is a much broader and bigger picture approach designed to shape your life around the things that really matter. While this approach has value it's much harder to implement for many people (including myself).

The books approach the subject very differently, and some people are more likely to get more out of the first book. So don't be fooled by the title - read the earlier book and decide for yourself!

Basic Motivation Skills 101

Wowza. As I'm writing this review, I see I purchased this book in May 2014 and here it is March 2017 --- that's how long it took me to finally get around to reading this book.

I remember seeing Shawn on Oprah and that's what prompted me to order his book. I started reading it today and I'm done. I pretty much skimmed the whole thing as it was basic common sense. Here's the gist: find the positive in everything and learn from it, set attainable goals and don't make assumptions about anything or anyone. The End.

Best Read this Year!

This book is a sequel to his other Happiness Book and is a must-read. Both books have changed my life day to day. I am more satisfied with my job, my family, and my life. I am excited to get up in the morning--and that had not been the case for quite awhile. His writing style is casual and easy to read--even though he is extremely educated. He weaves anecdotal with solid research to prove each concept. Thank you Shawn for changing lives!

A sweet and sexy romance about finding life and love again

The title of this story, and my knowledge of the author's other works immediately made me assume that this was going to be an erotic historical romance. It isn't - instead it's a lovely, thoughtful and interesting story (with some sexy love scenes) of widowed Amelia, who finds a soldier in the street suffering from amnesia. She cares for him, and as he slowly regains his memory, a mystery remains - who is he, what really happened to him, and how did he end up back in England. Along the way, Amelia and Marco find themselves falling for each other, and when they arrange a marriage of convenience, it soon turns to more. I really enjoyed the story as it moved at a good pace, with the romance and the drama intertwined. Actually I had a hard time putting it down, because I wanted to know about Marco's past as much as he did! Amelia has her own secrets that gradually get revealed too, and the two of them were really a perfect match by the time all was said and done. It's a heartwarming tale of love found, and a sexy and entertaining read. 4 stars.

I was delighted when I was given a free copy of this book by Kate for a review...

I love everything I have ever read written by Kate Pearce. This book was no exception. Kate's historic books are rich in history, characterization and sensuality. She teases our senses and creates visions that will stay with you long after the story has ended. I really didn't want to let go of these two people as they fit so well together and completed each other. They both needed each other and I am so glad they found each other in Kate's imagination.

This is the conclusion of the Diable Delamere series with Amelia Smith who is the widow of a fallen war soldier she defied her family and married. She's back in England living had to mouth with her late husband's aunt as her family disowned her when she married. She finds an unconscious man in the village that appears to be a war veteran. He finally wakes with no memory of who he is or how he got there. The story unfolds as Amelia and Marco/Marcus finds clues to his history and in the process he "awakens" Amelia to getting on with her life as she's been treading water with kind and lonely Aunt Betty. The intrigue and mystery of this story kept me reading. I had read #2.5 Loving Michael and this story drove me to read #1 Educating Elizabeth which I discovered I already on my Nook in the A Taste Of Scandal Box Set. I'll have to get #2 Redeeming Jack as these two stories are intertwined in the conclusion of the series in this book.

Awakening Amelia (Diable Delamere Book 3)

This is the story of Amelia Smith , a widow who lost her husband during the war and has made it her mission in life to lend a helping hand to soldiers who need it. So when she happens to come by a soldier, Marco , unconscious in the street, she immediately goes into caretaker mode and takes him home.

Now you guys already know this is a romance story so it's gonna get sexy. Although not as erotic as Kate's usual works, Marco and Amelia still gave off plenty of sparks :) Amelia is such a beautiful soul ... gah, I just didn't want this story to end!

The suspense of the story is quite addictive. You can't help but be completely invested. As Marco and Amelia both search for answers of his past, you will be right there with them ... wanting badly to know the who what when of it all! Kate created characters in Amelia and Marco that were absolutely perfect for one another. Both with baggage. Both searching for answers. Both just incredibly suited for one another. Both developing and growing thru each other towards a well deserved HEA!

I absolutely LOVED this story and I highly recommend it! It should be noted that altho the story of Amelia and Marco can be read as a standalone, there are intertwined characters thru this entire series and I highly recommend you start from the beginning with Educating Elizabeth, which introduces the suspenseful arc that flows thru all 4 stories in this series.
