Awesome book about resting in the spirit!
By A Customer
This is such an amazing book about the phenomenon of being "slain" or "overcome" in the spirit. The stories in this are truly touching, and make me wonder why anyone would say that these manifestations are caused by Satan. They truly are from God. I see they have several copies of this book above, new and used -- get it! If you're not a believer that falling is caused by God's spirit, or believe that it serves no purpose (which I once did), this book will change you. It's the only book I know of (there may be others) that is solely dedicated to resting in the Spirit... so check it out.

Why do some people fall down when they are prayed for?
By A Customer
This is an excellent book for people puzzled by the phenomenon of people being "slain" in the Spirit (though MacNutt does not like that particular terminology and offers alternatives). MacNutt shares biblical insights, anecdotal experience, and practical tips gleaned from years of ministry.

WONDERFULLY BALANCED
By A Customer
Francis MacNutt provides a well balanced look at, what he terms,"resting in the spirt". From a religious background that would often close someone off from such experiences Mr. MacNutt has maintained an open minded approach. Perhaps most revealing is the overwhelming evidence and testimonies of the people that have "rested". A recommended read for everyone who is curious about what they have seen...and felt.

Christopher and His Kind, by Christopher Isherwood

In November 1929, Christopher Isherwood - determined to become a 'permanent foreigner' - packed a rucksack and two suitcases and left England on a one-way ticket for Berlin. With incredible candour and wit, Isherwood recalls the decadence of Berlin's night scene and his route to sexual liberation. As the Nazis rise to power, Isherwood describes his dramatic struggle to save his partner Heinz from persecution.

About the Author
Christopher Isherwood was born in 1904. He began to write at university and later moved to Berlin, where he gave English lessons to support himself. He witnessed first hand the rise to power of Hitler and the Nazi party in Germany and some of his best works, such as Mr. Norris Changes Trains and Goodbye to Berlin, draw on these experiences. He created the character of Sally Bowles, later made famous as the heroine of the musical Cabaret. Isherwood travelled with W.H Auden to China in the late 1930s before going with him to America in 1939. He died on 4 January 1986. His novel A Single Man was recently made into an award-winning film by Tom Ford, starring Colin Firth and Julianne Moore.

How kind of Isherwood
By B. Morse
To reveal a more candid portrait of his life between 1929 and 1939.

Christopher and His Kind explores the real story behind his travels back and forth from England to Germany, and the people and events that influenced his life during this decade of time.

Having first read 'Down there on a Visit', which draws experiences and people from this time in his life as it's foundation, it was amusing to read the 'real' story behind certain characters and situations described in the former novel.

Isherwood is far more frank about his homosexuality, and his encounters with other males, in this book, which can also be attributed to the time period in which this was written, being the 1970's, which definitely saw a more liberal attitude emerging than in the 50's, and 60's. But at the same time, he never seems 'graphic' or overindulgent in his descriptiveness. A sense of propriety and discretion carries throughout.

The only off-putting aspect of this novel to me, which lists many of Isherwoods contemporaries and friends, including Wystan Auden, E.M. Forster, Virginia Woolf, Aldous Huxley, and more, is that Isherwood in many, many instances refers to himself in the third person, as Christopher, and then immediately switches to first person, 'me'....which is a bit confusing. It reminded me of another book by an 'autobiographical' author, Edmund White (The Married Man) in which White switches from his usual first-person narrative to a third person narrative, leaving me with the impression that he found himself unable to record the events described as anything but an outsider, or observer. I wonder if perhaps the same is true with Isherwood?

Regardless, this book delves deep into his travels, and interactions with his friends and family. Also described are his days with a long-term love and travel companion, and the lengths Isherwood went to for this young man. The book hints at much more to come with the ending words, which is by far my favorite 'line' out of the four Isherwood works I have read...knowing what he is refering to....but I won't give it away.

An excellent read, and entertaining to any fan of this gifted author, to know more about his life and times.

One of a Kind
By Aaron
This book is one of a kind....brilliant, great, adventurous, a classic. Words do not describe it. Isherwood lays evertything on the table. He shows all his cards. This is one of the most exciting books I've ever read. I'm a college student and I skipped all of the ten thousand other books I have to read in order to read this one. It was not a waste of time. Once you get into this book it's a blast. The best part is following Isherwood across Europe. If you want the definitive feeling about the Modern Era read this book. You will get to know such characters as EM Forster, W.H. Auden, and Virginia Woolfe.....Gee, ever heard of them? This is the last great classic Isherwood wrote. I was so entranced by the words that I stayed up all night to finnish it. It's defintiely on my all time favorite list.

A writer's point of view
By Jack Bottlaender
This book is an interesting piece of literature for different reasons.

Firstly, it is a great book for every reader who is curious to know the story line of Isherwood's life, and discover the details of the events he went through. While a bit confusing at first, the third person speech is actually quite suited to his particular way of telling his story.

Then I would like to insist on the fact that this book depicts a writer perception of the world, as Isherwood gives a lot of importance to describing how and when he wrote his novels, and who helped him do so (quite often his friend the poet Wystan Auden). A great deal of the book is about the other famous writers of his time and how he met them.

If you have seen the BBC movie of the same name, don't be surprised if you read the book as the timeline is a bit different, and also as some characters of the movie come from other novels he wrote about his stay in Berlin, and are not present in this book.

Finally, the book is also worth reading to know how Isherwood traveled and tried to save his lover from Germany, at a time when Nazis and Hitler came to power.

In a word, I'd recommend this book to everyone interested in either Christopher Isherwood, or in the 1930's and who would like to read about it from a different perspective.

When the Bullet Hits Your Funny Bone: The Essence of A U.S. Navy Seal, by Billy Allmon

When the Bullet Hits Your Funny Bone: the Essence of a U.S. Navy SEALis a collection of true events about the author's time in U.S. Navy SEAL Teams and how SEALs use their humor to cope with all sorts of tragic events that they experience in their professional careers.

This book offers the reader a personal glimpse into the humours minds of America's most elite warriors. The stories explain how SEALs bond with each other to become brothers-in-arms through their difficult training and tactical missions. This book also explains why SEALs use extreme humor, on themselves and others, in order to cope with a job that places these professional warriors face to face with death on almost a daily basis.

There are those who say that it is not logical to run into the face of danger, perhaps that explains why most people think that SEALs are crazy. We prefer to look danger in the eye and not run from it, perhaps this also explains why there are not so many of us.

When The Bullet Hits Your Funny Bonetakes the reader on an emotional roller-coaster ride of tragedy and laughter, giving the reader a complete inner circle view into the professional and personal lives of America's most elite warriors. "Billy Allmon's paean to the life and laughs of Navy SEALS hits with the force of a well-placed head shot. A sort of "humor in uniform on steroids," When the Bullet Hits Your Funny Bone lets you share the good and bad times with Allmon and his high-charged buddies as they take on the officious brass, jealous allies and comrades, nasty civilians, and even themselves. Whether training in sunny Southern California or deploying on secret missions, the SEALS bring their own brand of humor with them. A humor that bespeaks the shared hardships in an elite military culture that is often celebrated but little understood." ~ S. W. O'Connell, author of The Patriot Spy.

"Allmon tells of some truly hilarious aspects of SEAL life such as measuring new tadpoles (trainees) for body bags or filling the heavy boats they have to carry around during training with helium. There are many other incidents as you might guess from the title but I won't spoil the book for you by relating them here. I'll simply say that SEALs really understand the meaning of "payback"! Any SEAL who tries to set himself above his buddies is likely to regret it--in spades. Read this book and I'll guarantee you'll laugh!" ~ Darrell Bain, author of Medics Wild

"With Navy SEALs much ballyhoo'ed in the news in the last year, it's good to find out what they're really like. Billy Allmon, a retired SEAL, gives us the insider's look at these elite soldier/sailors. He tells the tale of the formation and history of the SEALs, because he lived it himself. He shows us the laughter, the tears, the hopes and fears and above all, the HUMANITY of the SEALs, as no one else ever could. Fascinating reading, a must for anyone interested in military history or the inside story of this unique breed of warrior."

"With Navy SEALs much ballyhoo'ed in the news in the last year, it's good to find out what they're really like. Fascinating reading, a must for anyone interested in military history or the inside story of this unique breed of warrior."

After reading this book I've ordered a copy for a grandson and my own son. I knew very little about the SEALS but I've always admired them for what I've read and seen. I like the way the book is written. I always felt that I was in the story with these guys--but thank God I wasn't.

This is a genuinely funny book! As an aside note here, People who gave this book one or two stars, must truly be incurably miserable people that they would never find ANYTHING funny! How truly SAD for those types of people.

I ordered this book because I heard the author talking about it during a radio interview and it peaked my interest. When I finally got the book I was very pleased, as I was taking it with me on a business trip to India. While reading, I found myself laughing out loud, and after my third outburst of laughter, the stewardess came over to tell me to please try and control myself. I gave her the book and told her to please read the short chapter that I had just finished about "Foggy Ice Cubes." She did, and then SHE started laughing hysterically! All the events that are written about in my book are true.... Only the names of the victims and perpetrators, as well as a few of the locations where the events took place, were changed to protect all those concerned!

About the Author
Billy Allmon is a retired Navy SEAL, he honorably served his country from 1969 to 1993. He retired as a chief petty officer, and he is a combat veteran of three wars. While in the Navy SEALs, Mr. Allmon participated in numerous covert and overt missions around the world in support of US doctrine, foreign governments, militaries, and other official agencies. His new book, "When the Bullet Hits Your Funny Bone - The Essence of a U.S. Navy SEAL," is a reflection of the humorous side of life in the U.S. Navy SEAL Teams. Billy Allmon will have you in stitches as he reveals how U.S. Navy SEALs use their humor (and at times it is very dark humor) to relieve the stresses of combat, while facing death on almost a daily bases.

The real deal
By Leonard Coppenrath
I downloaded this book to my kindle. I served in SEAL Team One with the author in the early 70's, then spent the rest of my time as a member of a West coast SEAL reserve team (West Coast Puke). This book brought back some great memories of our time in the Teams and hit the point well for maintaining a sense of humor while engaged in a profession that only a few can endure. I was busting up laughing at several of Billy's stories since they carry the tone and flavor of typical SEAL extracurricular activities in it's day. Whether back in the states or somewhere deployed, when we were not having fun in the field, we were doing it after hours, and some were classic as illustrated in this book. A great read and a big BZ to Billy for writing this and bringing back the good ole days!

A fun read.
By TTaylor2626
"When the Bullet hits Your Funny Bone" is a great read for anyone looking to see how some of the highly trained and most dedicated military professionals pull pranks on their buddies, handle the stresses of an intense job, and blow off steam. This book has a great balance of funny stories, amazing practical jokes and insight into US Navy SEAL training, life, and the bonds that are forged among these men. Most importantly, the stories of fallen comrades and friends truly honor the men who risk their lives regularly. A great read.

Great non-PC laughs ... IF you have a demented sense of humor
By Vaughn L. Johnson
I am not in the military, but I have about 20 years as a cop. Suffice to say, my sense of humor is about as messed up as you can find. Dark, cynical, pessimistic ... I've lived it ... the only way to mentally survive the ugliness of all that we see...is to laugh and make jokes about things that really shouldn't be funny at all. This book about SEALs made me laugh on more than one occasion ... and leads me to believe that those of us in ugly job descriptions are very similar in how we cope.

A good cookbook and an affectionate memoir
By Larbo
People expecting a conventional cookbook may be put off by how much of it is dedicated to the author's family history. Although the Caribbean is closer to the US, Jonathan Phang is much better known in the UK, where he grew up and lives. But as he explains, "Guyanese people are made up of the six races of the Caribbean: East Indian, Chinese, Mixed European (Creole, mostly British and Portuguese), African, North American, and indigenous Amerindian." Understanding that "between them, my parents' blood represented all of these six races" is crucial to understanding a recipe that combines soy sauce, worchestershire, ketchup, yellow mustard, dark rum, habaneros, and lime. And growing up in England as he did, where he encountered "bland, badly cooked food away from home," you appreciate his fierce attachment to the "aromatic and spicy" food his parents brought with them.

All this would only be of historical or sociological interest if the recipes themselves were disappointing, but I have yet to try anything from the book that is less than delicious. If you're after Caribbean food that's scorchingly hot, you won't find it here. For me, his recipes are a perfect balance between the hot chilies of the Caribbean, the richness of ingredients like coconut milk, the refreshing bite of lime juice and cilantro, and a blend of spices and seasonings from the cultures that came together in Guyana.

Love That Boy: What Two Presidents, Eight Road Trips, and My Son Taught Me About a Parent's Expectations, by Ron Fournier

Tyler and I inch toward the Green Room, in line with blow-dried TV anchors and stuffy columnists. He’s practicing his handshake and hello: “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. President. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. President. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. President.” When the couple in front of us steps forward for their picture, my teenager with sky-blue eyes and a soft heart looks up at me and says, “I hope I don’t let you down, Dad.”
What kind of father raises a son to worry about embarrassing his dad? I want to tell Tyler not to worry, that he’d never let me down. That there’s nothing wrong with being different. That I actually am proud of what makes him special. But we are next in line to meet the president of the United States in a room filled with fellow strivers, and all I can think about is the real possibility that Tyler might embarrass himself. Or, God forbid, me.

LOVE THAT BOY is a uniquely personal story about the causes and costs of outsized parental expectations. What we want for our children—popularity, normalcy, achievement, genius—and what they truly need—grit, empathy, character—are explored by National Journal’s Ron Fournier, who weaves his extraordinary journey to acceptance around the latest research on childhood development and stories of other loving-but-struggling parents.

Review
“Love That Boy captures both the fears and gifts of fatherhood and writes about it with honest, selfless clarity. This book is a joy to read, and should be required for all new dads…Really.”
—Jim Gaffigan, Comedian and author of Dad is Fat

“This illuminating and touching book gives us the great gift of letting us know and appreciate the Asperger's world of young Tyler Fournier, who steals scenes from presidents while teaching his parents and all of us what is important in life. “
—David Maraniss, Pulitzer-prize winning author of Once in a Great City: A Detroit Story

"Love That Boy is sohonest, raw, open and unafraid thatit will surprise youwith its startling honesty. It helped me understand what some of my friends are going through as parents - even those who aren't facing a major health problem but are dealing with the pressures and expectations on themselves and their children. Ron's written a book about the grit and love it takes to get through life, and he and Lori emerge from those years with a stronger family and an appreciation for living that all of us can only hope to feel some day."
--Former White House Press Secretary, Dana Perino

"LOVE THAT BOY is a gift to families of all kinds. Tyler is a reminder of why being a parent, whatever the child's condition, is at once the most important and challenging job in mankind."
-- Tom Brokaw, journalist, news anchor, and author of The Greatest Generation

“Fournier’s bracingly candid and engagingly written new book, Love That Boy, represents an evolutionary leap forward in several respects — not just for autism-related books but for societal attitudes toward parenting in general….“Love That Boy” is full of feeling... The book’s lesson for everyone is that sometimes we pay the truest tribute to our parents’ hopes for us by defying their expectations.” --Steve Silberman, author of NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity, for the San Francisco Chronicle

"Ron Fournier has done a masterful job capturing the troubles and triumphs of parenting. That we – as parents and caring adults– too often superimpose our own needs and aspirations on the children we love is an important theme in this must read new book. It is a moving tale of fatherhood and of coming to terms with a more enlightened definition of perfect.”
—Stephen Gray Wallace, MSEd, President and Director of the Center for Adolescent Research and Education (CARE)

“There's no magic wand that can make the challenges of parenting disappear, but having the courage to talk honestly about them may be the next best thing. This is a candid look at raising an atypical child. Ron Fournier leads by example, digging through expectations and ego to lay bare what it means to love a child unconditionally."
—Olivia Morgan, Managing Editor, The Shriver Report; Member of the Board, New England Center for Children

"Ron Fournier’s deeply personal account of the frustrations and celebrations that go along with raising a special child is deeply moving. As the proud father of an Asperger’s child, Ron's heartfelt work inspired me as much as I know it will inspire you.”
—Joe Scarborough, NBC News senior political analyst and host of Morning Joe

"American Presidents have the honor of meeting Tyler Fournier in this lovely, intimate and inspiring book by his father, which has so much to teach all parents, sons and daughters.”
—Michael Beschloss

“Ron Fournier and his son Tyler are partners on an eye-opening road trip to the crossroads of love and humanity. Along the way, they meet Bill Clinton and George Bush; but the real reward for readers from his being on the road with his dad is that we meet Tyler, a young man with Asperger’s and a heart as big as the country.”
—Mike Barnicle, journalist and MSNBC news analyst

“In this aching, honest, and moving account of coming to terms with his son’s Asperger diagnosis, Ron Fournier speaks to every parent who has struggled with, not only accepting but embracing, his or her child’s differences. Quite frankly, that is every one of us. To varying degrees we all have two children, the one we hoped for and the one we have. It is the latter that is the blessing. Love that Boy reminds us not to be preoccupied with weaknesses, but to look for strengths. Ultimately Fournier sees clearly, without projection or intruding narcissism, the gift that he has been given in his quirky, whip smart, and unforgettable son Ty. A brave and beautiful recounting.”
—Madeline Levine, Ph.D. author of The Price of Privilege and Teach Your Children Well

"We love our kids fiercely – that’s a given. Less obvious is knowing how to love our kids unconditionally, so they in turn can love themselves, feel a sense of belonging in the world, and get out there and thrive. All too often we have a specific image of success in mind for our kids and do our darnedest to fashion them accordingly. This can make them feel we love not them but our image of who they could become if only they tried harder to please us. Fournier leads us step by step through his struggle to accept his third child – a son, Tyler, who was diagnosed with Asperger’s at age 12 – and comes to the realization that Fournier’s own ego, not Tyler’s Asperger’s, was the obstacle. But this book isn’t just for parents of kids with special needs – it’s for any of us, all of us, who have more than occasionally needed our kid to be more athletic, articulate, artsy, amiable, able… A shining example of honesty and humility in parenting, Fournier’s journey forced me to dig deep and provoked more than a few tears. Ultimately, he’s drawn a road map for all parents that is as inspiring as it is necessary."
—Julie Lythcott-Haims, author of the New York Times bestseller How to Raise an Adult

"Without putting too fine a point on it,Love That Boypresents a particular story about Tyler and a universal story about parenthood--its conclusions are born out of this moving interaction between personal experience and time-honored truths.Love That Boyis a must-read for parents and the parented."
—Hank Stephenson, Shelf Awareness

"Good advice backed by research coupled with personal reflections by a father on how to let children grow up to be individuals rather than miniature versions of their parents."
—Kirkus Review

“I encourage you to read Love That Boy… [a]n eloquent, brave, big-hearted book…about the timeless anxieties and emotions of parenthood, and the modern twists thereon.”
—James Fallows, The Atlantic

"[A]testament to understanding it’s OK to not be perfect...Love That Boy is alabor of love that intricately and intimately intertwines our current history with raising a child with Asperger’s. Read it. I promise you won’t forget it anytime soon."
—Pittsburgh Tribune Review

“[W]ith great honesty and empathy, Love That Boy recounts how Fournier set aside a heavy burden of fatherly expectations to understand and embrace his son Tyler, an extraordinary young man… It is a brief, moving reflection, not only on parenthood, but on what it means to accept another human being entirely, for who they really are, and how much harder that can be with those who are closest to us.”
– Michael Gerson, Washington Post

"[A] must read for every parent and grandparent –a remarkable, moving, and perhaps life-changing read for anyone raising a child in the new millennium." -- Hugh Hewitt

“I loved Ron Fournier's "Love That Boy," and while it's a book about parenting, its lessons are universal. At its core, this book is an honest, moving mediation on the meaning of unconditional love -- about the expectations we bring to the relationships in our lives, and how we square those expectations with the real, flesh-and-blood human beings who mean the most to us and challenge us.” –Arianna Huffington for Book of the Month Magazine

“Fournier’s bracingly candid and engagingly written new book, Love That Boy, represents an evolutionary leap forward in several respects — not just for autism-related books but for societal attitudes toward parenting in general… Love That Boy is full of feeling... The book’s lesson for everyone is that sometimes we pay the truest tribute to our parents’ hopes for us by defying their expectations.” -- San Francisco Chronicle

Love This Book! Learn how to embrace the unexpected in your own life, for the love of that boy.
By Jude Nagurney Camwell
A bit of self-revelation, it was my shared experience of raising a son with Asperger’s Syndrome that brought me to read Ron Fournier’s candid story about his relationship with his own son, Tyler. I know how a parent can feel suddenly alone and a bit helpless when they’re faced with the realization that, despite all their grandest plans and intentions, what their child has needed most is simply to be seen for the wonderful, unique person that he is.

In my case, the “A-ha!” moment came to me when my son would rush to the coat closet at his preschool every morning, like clockwork, and grab the lone red hanger for his coat. The day the red hanger was already taken by another coat, you would’ve thought my boy’s world had come to an end! I was terrified by his emotional meltdown. The change, not having that one darn red hanger, was too much for him; it overwhelmed him. Lucky for us, a teacher’s aide at the school had seen this behavior before and pointed me in the direction of professionals who could evaluate his behavior. I was grateful that we found specialists who recognized Asperger’s and helped us to develop an early intervention plan. From that time forward, my life as a parent became more dependent on my community than I’d ever have anticipated. Neurologists, child psychologists, special preschool, special education planning, support groups. It was always hard for me to admit I couldn’t do it all myself, but that really wasn’t helping or supporting my son. It was shielding my own fear of looking like an imperfect mother. My son’s a young man now, a college graduate with a promising career, but none of that would have been possible if I hadn’t learned how to embrace the unexpected in my own life, for the love of that boy.

That’s why I loved reading every word Ron wrote about his own special trip with Tyler. It’s a journey of discovery in more ways than one. The two of them go out on road trips to see historic places related to an interest they both share, American Presidents. Ron has covered presidential politics for many years and Tyler’s passion is gathering facts about U.S. presidents. They even meet a few presidents along the way, namely President Barack Obama and former Presidents George W. Bush (who inspired the book’s name) and William J. Clinton. It’s amusing to read how each president interacted with Tyler and, even more interesting, how he perceived them. Some of Tyler’s witty comments while visiting historic sites made me laugh out loud. What a joy it must have been for both father and son.

Ron’s personal journey toward understanding himself, as Tyler’s dad, is the hidden jewel in the story. It makes his book perfect for any mom or dad. We parents can go through some confusing times when complicated challenges or unclear issues facing our child arise. There are times we come down hard on ourselves asking, “Why didn’t I see it sooner?” We may look back and wonder how it is that we’d failed to see that boy (or girl) growing up under our roof as his (or her) own self rather than the child we’d envisioned parenting. The secret to fostering a loving and supportive bond with your child, as Ron shows in a delightful way, is to love them enough to take the time to share their world, to erase that child of expectation, and to make a new discovery of an interesting, shining soul that’s been waiting for you under all those self-taught presumptions. Parenthood is an open road. For any parent, learning to embrace the unexpected is an act of loving that can produce a beautiful recognition and help your child have a more meaningful life.

I did not get the point of this book.
By Casey Evans (CM_Evans@pacbell.net)
I did not get the point of this book. It is about the relationship between a father and special needs son, but the author goes on and on about acceptance and the difficulty of having a special needs kid. But the son was not even diagnosed until he was like 10 years old or something. And by the conversations they have, the son's aspirations, and more he really doesn't sound very disabled to me. In fairness I have a child with Cri du Chat Syndrome so I may be a little jaded because my daughter is at the other extreme end of the disability spectrum (non-verbal, incontinent, mentally 18 months old, etc.) But a large part of the book was how parents nowadays try to live vicariously through their children, how Ron knows current and former presidents, how great a parent his wife is, how bad a parent he is, and on and on. The bottom line for me was the book seemed to lack purpose.

A dad's account of the lessons his son taught him. Highly recommended
By Mark Youngkin
As the father of three boys on the autism spectrum, I'm always looking out for people in the same situation. When I saw journalist Ron Fournier discuss his book about his life with his son on the spectrum on TV, I immediately found it and put it on my wish list. I'm glad I did. Fournier doesn't spare himself as he tells the story of his quest to understand and accept his son. That's not easy living the life of an autism family, as my wife and I realize every day.

The book is at its best when the author is relating his experience with his son and the rest of his immediate and extended family, and his discoveries from interviews and conversations with experts and lay people. Less so when he pauses to make meaning of what he's learned. Fortunately there's a lot more of the former than the latter. I would recommend this book for any parent whose parenting experience has gotten frustrating. It may show you that the change required may be within you.
