From Kirkus Reviews
Here, Hunt, a former CNN investigative reporter, tells a shocking tale: how a branch of the US government deliberately thwarted attempts to bring to justice Nazi scientists who were guilty of war crimes, and who, in at least one case, actually participated in fresh atrocities in the US. While it is common knowledge that the US used Nazi scientists during the cold war, Hunt reveals for the first time that the project to recruit and utilize Nazi scientific talent- -code-named ``Paperclip''--continued until 1973. In addition, while former Nazi scientists (like Werner von Braun) contributed greatly to the development of rockets, jet planes, and other prodigies of technology, Hunt convincingly demonstrates that several such scientists also participated in ``Dachau-like experiments on over seven thousand U.S. soldiers'' on the effects of LSD and other chemicals at Edgewood, Maryland, between 1947 and 1966. Moreover, Hunt explains that the US avidly recruited many Nazi scientists, despite their war crimes--including utilization of slave labor and execution of prisoners--and despite the continuing devotion of many to Nazi ideology. Hunt also relates the sordid details of the intelligence community's attempts to prevent bringing these scientists to justice. And, in at least one case, she shows that the program was inimical to US interests--the man who conceived and ran Paperclip was ultimately convicted of selling American defense secrets to the Soviet Union. An engrossing examination of how a small clique of defense and intelligence officials deliberately subverted stated US policy. An excellent resource!
By Kathleen A. Sullivan
Having read many books and articles about the U.S. government's secret recruitment of Nazi scientists and war criminals, I can state - without hesitation - that Linda Hunt's "Secret Agenda" is unusually accurate, painstakingly objective, and well documented. Although her revelations about the creation of NASA by Nazi recruits and documented war criminals may be painful for some individuals who are devoted to, and highly supportive, of our federally funded space agency; the information contained in Secret Agenda should nevertheless be made widely known. Only by learning the truth about the secretive sins of our government's employees and leaders, can we - as citizens - work to ensure that such sins are not repeated in the future.

Every Veteren Should Read This
By M. Atkins
I am a patriot and have gone to war for my country. I would do it again all the while thanking God for the good people that work so diligently, as Linda Hunt has, to keep our government honest and out in the open. This is an intriguing book and there is much evidence that things of this nature are still taking place.

Important historical information
By A. Marciniszyn
Unless other books are examined, it would not be possible for the average reader to assess this book from a historical context. It would also be helpful to look at German language books about this subject. Although the author rightly points out atrocities committed by some in the German rocket program, it is difficult, in some cases, to know all of the details. Even after all this time, what might be called "fair and balanced" accounts might be difficult for some to believe.

Putting the author's own bias aside, the book chronicles a project led by men in the US Intelligence and aviation communities with purely practical goals in mind. The fact that it continued after its official closure shows how critical these former Nazis were to the United States. As a side note, I should mention that the Russians got their share of rocket scientists as well. Many people are unaware of how many worked in Peenemunde during the war.

In 1950, a two volume set of books was published titled German Aviation Medicine under the auspices of the U.S. Air Force. It should be pointed out that a title like, Aviation Medicine would have been descriptive enough. Its authors were some of the same Germans that worked for NASA.

The author also covers the effect of former Nazi technicians arriving in Argentina and other South American countries to continue their work there. The following chapter paints a disturbing picture of Paperclip scientists being involved in experiments in the United States with dangerous and mind altering substances. She also reveals that Austrian scientists were being recruited.

The book closes with chapters devoted to ferreting out information about any criminal wrongdoing by members of the rocket team during the war and the implication that America was too influenced by Nazi ideas and thinking. This is a very dubious claim. The British stated at the end of the war that the V-1 and V-2 were necessary for their very survival. Indeed, this technology was not just about getting to the moon but was the genesis of ICBMs and current cruise missiles. There was no time wasted between the Americans and Russians; everyone grabbed whatever they could, nailed down or not. And everyone raced to arm for the next possible conflict.

Though the author condemns those in charge of bringing Nazis to the United States in violation of the law and moral norms, the fact of the matter was that the Russians still had their armies in Eastern Europe and fears of an early conflict were quite real. The Russians had added captured German jet fighters and bombers to their inventory. They also had captured V-1s and V-2s. Estimates regarding the development of the first Russian atomic bomb were being drawn up.

Translating Children's Literature (Translation Practices Explained), by Gillian Lathey

Translating Children’s Literature is an exploration of the many developmental and linguistic issues related to writing and translating for children, an audience that spans a period of enormous intellectual progress and affective change from birth to adolescence. Lathey looks at a broad range of children’s literature, from prose fiction to poetry and picture books. Each of the seven chapters addresses a different aspect of translation for children, covering:

         Narrative style and the challenges of translating the child’s voice;

         The translation of cultural markers for young readers;

         Translation of the modern picture book;

         Dialogue, dialect and street language in modern children’s literature;

         Read-aloud qualities, wordplay, onomatopoeia and the translation of children’s poetry;

         Retranslation, retelling and reworking;

         The role of translation for children within the global publishing and translation industries.

This is the first practical guide to address all aspects of translating children’s literature, featuring extracts from commentaries and interviews with published translators of children’s literature, as well as examples and case studies across a range of languages and texts. Each chapter includes a set of questions and exercises for students.

Translating Children’s Literature is essential reading for professional translators, researchers and students on courses in translation studies or children’s literature.

Review
"Clearly and accurately written, Lathey's study addresses all relevant questions concerning the translation of children's literature. In addition to classic scholars, it also cites experienced translators and supports every topic through many examples from different languages. Translating Children's Literature stimulates readers' reflections and proposes a modern and pragmatic vision of translation as a non-prescriptive, decision-making activity that takes place in a specific cultural and editorial context." Roberta Pederzoli, University of Bologna at Forli, Italy

Great book on the world of spying.
By B. Wolinsky
J. Edgar Hoover, head of the FBI for 50 years, wasted a whole lot of time. He devoted millions of dollars in money, man hours, and equipment just to spy on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Now what was the end result? They had tapes of Dr. King cavorting with his female admirers! It was all part of a scheme by Hoover to discredit Dr. King, and it didn’t work. The tapes didn’t turn anyone against King, and it didn’t drive him to take his own life. As for Hoover, the FBI made few gains during his tenure, with no major targeting of drug cartels nor organized crime. Hoover was interested only in bank robbers and subversives. According to this book, the US intelligence services had a problem with direction. When they were headed by one man (in this case Hoover) they were completely subordinate to him and his ridiculous policies.

Each chapter in this book is written by a different expert in the field of intelligence, both in the USA and abroad. In the chapter Intelligence Since 9/11, the two authors, Gerald Hughes and Kristan Stoddart, discuss how 9/11 and the 1945 Soviet threat had similar outcomes, but different origins. 9/11 may definitely be an example of a government “caught napping,” but the Soviet paranoia was greatly exaggerated.

While the book is generally open minded and examines all sides fairly, I would have like to see more case studies and comparison. There have been many unique spying efforts in the Cold War and in the 25 years since, so it would be great to learn about them and how the CIA has developed in the years since the USSR crumbled. I would also like to have seen someone compare the differences in the CIA and the Department of Homeland Security. Maybe compare the CIA, MI6, and the Israeli intelligence service.
